“It is possible, then, for everyone in every church, who may wish to know the truth, to contemplate the tradition of the apostles which has been made known to us throughout the whole world. And we are in a position to enumerate those who were instituted bishops by the apostles and their successors down to our own times, men who neither knew nor taught anything like what these heretics rave about” (Against Heresies 3:3:1 [A.D. 189]).
“[I]t is incumbent to obey the presbyters who are in the Church-those who, as I have shown, possess the succession from the apostles; those who, together with the succession of the episcopate, have received the certain gift of truth according to the good pleasure of the Father. But [it is also incumbent] to hold in suspicion others who depart from the primitive succession, and assemble themselves together in any place whatsoever, either as heretics of perverse minds, or as schismatics puffed up and self-pleasing, or again as hypocrites, acting thus for the sake of lucre and vainglory. For all these have fallen from the truth” (ibid., 4:26:2).
    TERTULLIAN
“But if there be any [heresies] which are bold enough to plant [their origin] in the midst of the apostolic age, that they may thereby seem to have been handed down by the apostles, because they existed in the time of the apostles, we can say: Let them produce the original records of their churches; let them unfold the roll of their bishops, running down in due succession from the beginning in such a manner that [their first] bishop shall be able to show for his ordainer and predecessor some one of the apostles or of apostolic men-a man, moreover, who continued steadfast with the apostles. For this is the manner in which the apostolic churches transmit their registers: as the church of Smyrna, which records that Polycarp was placed therein by John; as also the church of Rome, which makes Clement to have been ordained in like manner by Peter” (ibid., 32).
“But should they even effect the contrivance [of composing a succession list for themselves], they will not advance a step. For their very doctrine, after comparison with that of the apostles [as contained in other churches], will declare, by its own diversity and contrariety, that it had for its author neither an apostle nor an apostolic man; because, as the apostles would never have taught things which were self-contradictory” (ibid.).

Both of you guys are a great at edifying the church. I have heard testimonies of former Greek Orthodox who have said that one of the things that caused them pause, was that when good things would happen to their church - the church would gather and the first person they'd give thanks to is Mary. They'd run to give thanks to Mary. Shows where the heart's affections and even worship truly are. Anyone who thinks Christian hearts should be pointed first at Mary, is sadly mistaken.

You just went from one heresy to the next, seeking more knowledge but never arriving at the truth. And blood transfusions? Where is that in the Bible? Aside from the first 15 min of the video you’re not supplying and resources a person can verify and check the viability of what you’re saying. Notably at the 45 min mark, there is a lot of conjecture that what Catholics today celebrate in the mass only dates back to medieval christianity and looks nothing like early church Christianity. You supply no references or resources to support your claim, just accusation. My resource to refute your claim would normally be the Bible but in light of your argument as to the historicity of what the early church looked like you need to go no farther than the description of the mass as supplied by Justin Martyr. He clearly depicts a liturgical celebration that looks strikingly like what you see celebrated at the Catholic mass. What’s more is that in Martyrs defense of Christianity to the Roman Empire he addresses the Roman view that Christian’s are cannibals and argues to the contrary.

I understand that the Catholic and Orthodox church have retained a core liturgy that goes back further than that. But I meant that the church of the 4th and 5th centuries departed from apostolic Christianity in other, more important ways. Scripture clearly teaches that the church is the pillar of truth (1 Timothy 3:15), that bishops were appointed by the Holy Spirit (Acts 20:28), that a Christian must listen to the leaders watching over their souls (Hebrews 13:17), to keep the oral traditions of the apostles (2 Thessalonians 2:15).
Jesus even exhorted others to listen to the church, under pain of being condemned (saying they’re like pagan/tax collector, or in other words one who will be condemned); Matthew 18:17. He never gave authority for individual believers to determine their beliefs.
So if scripture equips us for every good work, these scriptures above must be included in that exegesis.
What’s also notable is that most people in history have been illiterate, and so would not even be able to read the scriptures, instead they would go to the church to hear the word of God spoken by a lawful priest. Almost all christians before the Protestant reformation were catholic/orthodox.
In scripture the saints were alive before judgement day, watching events taking place on earth, which proves they’re not in soul sleep but alive in heaven (Revelation 6:9-11).
The saints also have their prayers gathered and presented to God, as scripture clearly teaches (Revelation 5:8)
Paul said that we’re surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses (Hebrews 12:1)
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,”
This clearly suggests that the saints in heaven can not only witness our lives but even our sins.

The saints in heaven must be just as nothing unclean can enter, and so their prayers are powerful, and they are also constant as revelation 5 also tells us.

So for literally thousands of years every single old and New Testament author forgot to mention “ oh yeah by the way, you should pray to the saints”. Don’t you find that at least a little odd? If not, I’m talking to someone who is being disingenuous with themselves if you can’t at least say it’s a little odd all 40 or so authors of the Bible it just slipped their minds. Come on.

@@abideintheWord As much as you guys mention Sola Scriptura and Sola Fide, you think it would have been brought up by Jesus at least one single time, right? Where does the Bible say that the Eucharist is only a symbol?
See how this doesn't work? There are other authorities we must look to for guidance, as Jesus only had a limited time on this Earth, and his apostles who wrote the gospels, being men, had a limited memory of his words.
This is the issue for apostolic Christians debating Protestants, it is a fundamentally different system of belief, ours is based on 3 infallible authorities (2 for the Orthodox), and yours is only based on 1. The failure of Sola Scriptura is that it is self-contradictory as it is not found in the Bible (Nor was the current Biblical canon). I understand that tradition is viewed as a lesser and non-infallible authority for some Protestants and could be used to defend Sola Scripture, but tradition itself causes Protestant theology to utterly collapse, on Sola Scriptura and countless other issues (Bishops, Saints, Sacraments). The Bible is an infallible book, no doubt about it, as it is the word of God, but unless there is an infallible interpreter, there are bound to be countless divides and heresies that rise up in the church, as there are in Protestantism.
I admire your faith, and I hope that you come to Catholicism as I have, being a former Protestant myself.

The practice of iconography is part of early Christianity but became more of an issue in the eastern part of the empire when Muslims started invading their lands. They thought it was because of the icons to be "idols" but this was more or less siding with the Muslims thought on imagery, which was wrong. Then, during the reformation, they departed more from the faith when they had less imagery in their churches as well. The Church existed before the New Testament was even written. The canon of Scripture was determined by the Church. Sola Scripture is self-refuting because it implies that the canon of Scripture is fallible.
Most of the ideas you guys believe were popularized in the 16th century by the protestant reformers. Sola scriptura, sola fide, disbelief in the real presence, etc. are nowhere to be found in the early church. If these concepts were self-evident from Scripture, don't you think the Church in the first 1600 years would have believed them?
You claim that we are elevating the Church Fathers to an infallible status. Not true. What we are doing is pointing out that these Protestant concepts were nowhere to be found in the Church Fathers. It's not that the Church Fathers were always correct, it's that if a doctrine is completely contradictory to the unanimous consensus of the Church Fathers then it's easy to deduce that the modern interpretation is simply incorrect. Unless you believe that the Apostles did such a poor job of articulating their teachings that the early church unanimously believed false doctrines?
The problem with Protestants quoting Scripture is it begs the question, "How do you know your interpretation of that passage is correct"? It's an untenable position because you have no way of determining the validity of your interpretation. This is precisely why there are so many different Protestant denominations; because when everyone is coming to their own interpretations, there is no consensus. This is why the protestant reformers Luther, Calvin, and Zwingli disagreed heavily on such important tenants of the faith such as infant baptism, the real presence, and baptismal regeneration. Who is correct? Protestantism cannot tell you!

In Orthodox Christianity, the practice of asking for the intercession of Mary, saints, and angels is an essential part of their devotional life. However, while it's a prominent aspect of their spiritual tradition, it's not a mandated requirement for salvation. Orthodox believers often seek the intercessions of saints and Mary to pray to God on their behalf, believing that the saints' prayers are powerful due to their closeness to God. Nonetheless, prayer to saints and Mary is a matter of piety and tradition rather than a doctrinal obligation for salvation in Orthodox Christianity.

Every single believer has a different take of the scriptures they follow so that in itself should point out the written hypocrisy and the contradictions like the ones you've been pointing out in this video. That proves this very point. Humanity is more important than what some texts that other humans have written over the centuries for what they believed in at the time. Societies change with the times and the majority of these texts haven't and don't follow that intellectual progression and enlightenment. There are still more enlightenment stages for humanity's future. It's time to move on from brutal bronze age and middle ages group think and focus on provable facts of science and the human condition.
