  • Erica and Jean say they are very concerned for their 76-year-old mother, Blanche, and they are giving her an ultimatum: choose fentanyl or the family. The sisters claim they had an abusive upbringing with Blanche and hold a lot of resentment toward her. They also say Blanche has an addictive personality with prescription drugs, food, and shopping. Erica says their mother takes too many medications, and they say they are worried that she will hurt someone else, as she has been in several car accidents. Blanche insists she isn’t an addict but is dependent on her medications, which is different. Blanche claims she has always been the outcast of her family and hopes they will finally hear her perspective with the help of Dr. Phil. (20115)

Obviously she was a mean. Non affectionate and abusive mother. That has nothing to do with her medical conditions and her meds. So what exactly are these daughters trying to do? Embarrass her or get even THEN call her an addict and give her ultimatum to get help? Lol I don’t think their motives are all nice!

@@zoekay8612 they’re different because - and I’ll share my personal experience - there’s no psychological piece to it. I was on high doses of pain medication for six months due to a legitimate medical issue (drs missed something, and it was like a domino effect of issues from that mistake). When I had a surgery that finally ended up finally being what “fixed” the issue, I was SO much better but 1. Your pain tolerance is so low and you’ve taken so much for a long time that you feel you need more medication than you actually do to ease the pain (in my case, it was more surgical pain at that point and some residual stuff). The pain is very real and you’re not taking it for a high though. You’re so used to the medication and not even getting enough to feel anything - the goal is not to take away ALL pain, just make it tolerable/manageable.
      2. When I did get put on a taper, my dr did it way too fast and I was sooooo sick. I didn’t even realize it was withdrawal, I figured because I used my medication properly, I wouldn’t have withdrawal and didn’t realize dependency was a thing. I was so sick for three weeks and finally got put BACK on the pain meds for a slower taper.
The difference between addiction and your body just being dependent, is that my dr gave me a prescription for opiates to taper from at home, and I didn’t once take more than necessary and strictly followed the taper and then I was totally fine! An addict wouldn’t be able to do that, and why people say it’s different. I never used more than I ever needed, it’s just that over time you build a tolerance and then need more, and your body will become dependent on it regardless, which is hard!

I just want to add that just because someone is on pain medication, it doesn’t mean they are an addict!!
I have a debilitating connective tissue disease and seizure disorder; both have disabled me and cause extreme pain.
I have been on narcotic pain relievers since I was 20 years old (I’m 39 now) and they have SAVED MY LIFE.
I honestly wouldn’t be here today otherwise, because I would’ve taken my life due to the pain.
I am on the same dosage I was when I began taking them, and I have never taken an extra pill for “more relief” in the 20 years I’ve been on them.
They do not “get me high” they allow me to function as a semi-normal human being; for me, it is no different than taking blood pressure meds or insulin for diabetes.
We desperately need to break the stigma, because I know for a fact there are MANY people just like me out there; we need pain meds to survive, but it does not define us!

  • @erust9465

I’m sick and tired of all those that abuse pain meds. Why? Because of people wanting to get stoned, life has been hellish for those with chronic pain or serious/terminal illnesses. If she’s got a patch on, she’s seeing a Pain Management specialist. The laws are STIFF. She has to have a condition. Plus one stops being high as the body adjusts. It just helps with the pain/illness.
This is the one thing I completely DISAGREE with that Dr Phil pushes. The laws are much stiffer than in the 90s.

I think judging her for going out to eat is disgusting. The meds help her so that she isn’t doubled over stuck in her house. They also have never experienced never ending chronic pain to understand what you learn to hide behind a smile or push through. The judgment is awful and this just adds more judgment to those who need pain meds.

I was in the hospital for 200 days in 2016. We finally tried pain meds. They are the only way I tolerate the pain enough to be able to eat and not starving in a hospital bed. Granted, she's done terrible things to her children, but going to a movie or out to lunch and sitting and enjoying it is different than doing household chores or shopping. Even going a cruise she can sit, enjoy the meals, enjoy the view. She can just STOP taking the pain meds without going in to withdrawal, regardless of whether they are medically necessary or not. She would have to go through medicated withdrawal. Most people don't understand that.

I've lived in chronic debilitating pain for 13 years. Even with realistic expectations of a "healthy" level of pain relief from drugs, I became dependent pretty quickly. Most people want 100% pain relief but that's not realistic at all. Over the years I fluctuated in dosage and frequency to find a balance with varying degrees of success. Once I incorporated Cannabis into the equation I found that balance. The Cannabis doesn't so much directly relieve pain, but it expertly manages the anxiety that comes with it. I'm now able to deal with the steady constant level of pain without narcotics and allow myself a single 10mg dose of Oxycodone. That single dose gives me a 4 hour window of relief that allows me to do everyday chores. I still have to take breaks but at least I can almost keep up with cooking, cleaning and personal hygiene. The Best part is I can quit taking the narcotics with Zero repercussions at any time.
