I was a teenager when Nightmare came out and a major movie of the time. We watched the VHS over and over. The 4k UHD will be a must buy!
We need a 4K boxset with all the films in separate cases the same way Scream Factory did the Halloween and Friday the 13th blu-ray boxsets.
Today's my birthday and i turned 18!!!
Appreciate your youth while you have it lol. Happy Birthday! 🎉🎈🎁
Happy birthday. Take care, aden.
Happy birthday boss! Welcome to adulthood! Buckle up! Lol
I bought my first critereon like 2 weeks ago and I bought seven samurai!!! @@JeffRauseo
Happy birthday!
Can’t wait for 4K
Really hoping this release will finally give US video audiences Tina's uncut death scene (a splash of blood kicks up when she hits the bed, plus an extra second's view of the body a few seconds later).
There’s a scene with Freddy being visible laughing whilst he drags her around the room it’s terrifying
Thing is, over here in the UK we haven't had that fully uncut version since the VHS. All the subsequent Dvd & Blu-ray editions were the US version so they could carry over the commentaries. This is why I've kept hold of my original VHS.
Ty Jeff I can’t wait for 4K! Been a very long time coming and my hope is that the sequels are not far behind.
You did a great job doing this Nightmare on Elm Street video; thank you Jeff. I can't wait to see it in 4K. 🤗
I love this franchise. I was 5 when I saw this film. Left a huge impression on me. The blu ray box set is precious to me.
My family have Nightmare 1 and Freddy’s Revenge both on Laserdisc. Such great memories from watching it in the 80s when I was a little kid.
Not gonna lie, the OG Nightmare on Elm Street scared me good. That bedroom scene with Freddy coming out of the walls was spectacular
Absolutely loving these in depth videos so interesting to watch
Cant wait for the 4k really hope they do more than just a steelbook
We shall see!
i love this film and series, specially 3.
3 is my fave too!
It was the original 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' that introduced me to horror movies at a very young age. I was at someone's birthday party when I was 6 years old, told to go downstairs to turn off the TV, before I did, I saw a brief image of this movie. I can't remember exactly which part, but it scared the boogens out of me. I can't get that same rush today when reality is scarier than the movies.
Really love those videos!
Thoroughly enjoy these video history videos. 👍🏻
Appreciate all of the work you put into making them. Thank you Jeff. 🙏🏻
Must have for me ❤❤❤
Thank you mate i love this movie, Thanks for the great video 👍
Love those videos dude!!! 👏👏👏👏👏
Great video and I enjoy this series, Jeff, but you missed a couple of key releases. The laserdisc you pictured was actually the Elite Entertainment special edition released in 1996, with the film in widescreen for the first time. There was an earlier LD released alongside the old VHS which was also pan & scan. There was also a special edition DVD released sometime around 2006/2007 that I had at one point.
Great series though and I'm looking forward to the next one!
Damn - it’s so hard to track them all down sometimes. There is so little info on these!
There must have been two different versions of the special edition laserdisc from Elite Entertainment because the one that I own has a silhouette of Freddy Krueger against his red and green sweater as the background. It's a beautiful-looking laser disc jacket that folds open. I also have the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" special edition laserdisc which also folds open to an awesome image of Leatherface's signature weapon spread across both sides.
Yeah, it would have been nice if you had gone into more detail about the Elite Laserdisc Jeff because it was a big deal back then. But nevertheless, still a very very good video. Keep up the excellent work Mr. Rauseo.
Great info!
Love this sir. Well done.
*Excellent video topic choice!*
🤟🏽🤙🏽🤟🏽
Might be the first proper well-known horror I saw as a kid.
Good video Jeff! I wish I'd kept hold of my VHS here in the UK. I was so disappointed at the cuts on the Blu-rays. Tina's death was diminished and I think Rod's death might have been slightly longer before the 'crunch' sound. I'm cautious about this release: I really want a nice 4K version restored from the negative, but I really hope the additional bits are still on the negative and the MPAA cuts were made to the interpositive. All the films deserve the full 4K treatment.
I love your reviews obviously, but this is my favorite series that you do! I know it's probably a nightmare to research but they're some of your best work!
Great video! Counting the days till it's released in 4K...
I’m not buying 4K editions until a boxset is available
I have yet to watch any A Nightmare on Elm Street movies. Can't wait to get my hands on the 4K UHD copy!
Yessss I love the home video history!!!!
Great video! Let’s hope they release the entire franchise on 4k!
It's been a few years but as I remember it, the audio track on the Media VHS edition had a slightly different audio track. Freddy's voice was not as deep as it is in the other films or the later editions of this movie. Freddy sounded more like Robert Englund's actual voice. Also, the Elite version used for laserdisc was also issued on VHS as a two cassette version in about 1997. The first tape had the original movie in widescreen followed by trailers for Elm Street 1 -5. The second tape had deleted scenes and outtakes.
I had both the New Line Platinum series DVD set and the VHS set as well. Now the blu-ray set with up to New Nightmare. Awesome!
I always thought this series was the best! Better than Halloween and Friday the 13th.
Aww I was hoping this video would be a comparison between the formats, seeing the diference in color grading. I love how blue the night scenes are in the VHS, adds a creepy look to it, but most VHS tapes are a bit too bright, as they were made with the idea that people in their homes had brightly lit rooms and crushed black levels from using RF cables on their TV.
I was hesitant to watch this video because I was afraid it was going to be a dive into the movie itself; and that’s been done thoroughly elsewhere. But a dive into the physical release history?!?! This was great!!! Thank you so much and I’m sorry for doubting!
Excellent presentation of this movie trough the time 😁
The InfiniFilm 2-disc DVD set was previously the only way to see all the alternative endings. The real deleted scenes only exists on the Media VHS 2-pack tape set. So the true collector for this movie should keep all formats.
I guess this is more of the first editions of each format history because the 1999 DVD set was released with a new VHS collection with bonus features & the same transfer.
New Line also re-released the first film on a Infinifilm DVD release. The DVD's also omit the deleted scenes offered on the Laserdisc, such as the truth about Nancy having a sibling & Glenn's original death.
The Blu-ray was released in 3 ways, but each also included the pilot for Freddy's Nightmares which told Freddy's origin story. You also have the 4 Film Favorites DVD & Blu-ray releases too.
The LD shown in the video was the "standard" Elite release which, if I recall correctly, only included the trailer and (maybe) the commentary. Elite also released a $100 deluxe 2 disc CAV set that included the commentary, the deleted scenes you mentioned, outtakes, raw footage and trailers to all 7 films. Anchor Bay, formerly Video Treasures/Starmaker at the time, released a 2 tape deluxe VHS set around '96/'97 that included some (but not all) of the laserdisc extras. And as you said...NONE of the extras from the Elite LD or AB VHS releases (minus the trailers) have been repeated in subsequent releases...
@@CarterJBurke yeah many if not all I have as a bootleg extras set I got with Freddy's Nightmares. One of very few bootlegs I own only because it's not available anywhere else. Studios love milking a product but WB hasn't done anything like that for Freddy
That was dope
I would love to see a video in this type of format, on the history of Enter The Dragon, there has been so many releases of that movie its crazy.
Holy crap! You share a birthday with my beloved Marine Corps!
Great video on the history of an iconic horror film. Is there going to be a standard amaray release for the US?
I think there will be
@@JeffRauseo I definitely like steelbooks and depending on the artwork, I'll buy. But always nice to have a choice.
Great video as always. Will only point out that the Laserdisc was actually released by Elite Entertainment. Image did do an LD release, but their release was in pan and scan where as the Elite was the one that released it in its original aspect ratio. 😎
I’m so excited to FINALLY see the original Nightmare on 4K and only wish that we had some new special features. (I’d be happy with having all of the original TV spots, which I don’t believe have been included in any of the previous releases.) Hopefully, Warner gives us the original artwork for the cover!
I wonder if the new 4K version will be the fully uncut version? Craven was forced to cut (pun intended) Tina's death scene by about a second for US audiences. It's only a brief shot that was cut but it was very effective, during the shot when Tina falls from the ceiling onto the bed there's a big splash of blood as she lands. Over here in the UK it was uncut, as was the subsequent VHS release, but our DVD and blu ray editions were the cut US versions, which was very annoying. Why I've held onto my VHS, although with nothing to watch it on...
Nice video, I got a request can you do a home video history on “The Wizard of Oz”?
I hope the original camera negative has the full uncut version of Tina's death scene before the MPAA insisted on a few trims. Every version since the DVD has used the cut print and i wish i had kept my uncut UK VHS 18 rated edition.
I pre-ordered the steelbook last month from Amazon UK. Any idea or thoughts on when this could possibly be released?
You skipped the Elite 1996 THX laserdisc release which included all the special features, director/cast commentary and deleted scenes available on home video for the first time.
Yes I was going to say the same thing. The sleave cover had Freddy's trademark Red and Green Sweater. It was awesome. I originally owned it for many years unopened but unfortunately it was misplaced. 😢
The original Nightmare on Elm Street is still my favorite horror movie.
I’m hopeful for a full NOES catalog release on 4K Blu-Ray, and the same for Friday the 13th! Pie in the sky, I know, but still. 🤞🤞
What's funny is that it came out the same time as Silent Night Deadly Night
So weird , I watched this last night for the first time on my blu ray which I had never opened in the ten years that I had it. I watched about 15 minutes of it, and just couldn't get through it. The movie was just too clear. I was no longer scared. I popped in my original VHS, under the 36 CRT Trinitron, and I just felt like an 8 year old again, terrified. There is just something about these older horror films that just feel better on VHS, and to a lesser extent DVD.
It also had a tv show host by freddy
Currently own the A Nightmare on Elm Street 1-7 Blu-ray set I got for $20 a while back.
Not sure I will upgrade to 4K since the Blu-ray looks fine on my projected 130" screen and most 4K's are just getting too damn EXPENSIVE for such a small difference in the viewing experience.
I saw a screening of the new 4K transfer at Panic Fest this year & it looks great.
Great to hear. Was Tina's death scene unrated?
@@ChiefWiggum08151 What we saw was the theatrical cut.
It’s notable that somewhere in there was a DVD snapcase (the kind that combined a thin cardboard cover with plastic) version that used red as its primary color design. Those were widely popular, so I’m surprised you skipped that point in its home video history.
My only problem with the upcoming 4K? For the U.S., it’s an import. I shy away from them because A) if standard Blu-rays come with them, they’re typically region-locked, and B) they’re typically more expensive. Surely a domestic 4K will be announced soon (fingers crossed)!
I hope we get a 4K boxed set of these movies.
I hope we get the blue artwork on the 4K like the uk vhs
I'm surprised no one is addressing the price of this upcoming 4k disc. Unless there is another less expensive 4K version of this upcoming movie, "A Nightmare On Elm Street" is currently listed for $60.00, and that's before taxes and shipping and handling. Look, I'm as excited for the release of this movie on 4k as the next physical media collector, but for $60 bones I'm not seeing anything in the extras department that justifies the cost. Sorry, but it's going to take more than a few lobby cards, a thin booklet, a metal case, and special features carried over from previous iterations for me to plunk down $60 bucks for this movie, as badly as I want it on 4k.
If there is something I overlooked then please someone let me know, but as of now, this is looking like a pass for me until a less expensive version comes along.
The original VHS and LaserDisc versions are uncut, but all DVD & Blurays are cut. It's not by much, but I hope the 4K is uncut.
The same for part 5 The Dream Child, that's more noticeably cut on DVD & Bluray.
What’s the Release date????
Awesome news
Hey Jeff. You are incorrect when you say the early 4:3 edition is pan and scanned, it is in fact Full Frame Open Matte. You do not lose any width at all on the 4:3 edition but you do gain more image area top and bottom. The 16:9 widescreen version is the cropped theatrical aspect ratio and has no extra image left and right at all, but you do lose some image top and bottom. I have the first snapper case DVD which has both versions. I used my PC to overlay images and this confirmed my results. Great video though Jeff.
I got the dvd 2 4 film collections dvds that has the open matte on all movies as well as widescreen. Freddy vs Jason was filmed in super 35 so the pan and scan has additional information on top on bottom but slightly missing sides on that movie. However the important thing to take into consideration is how was the movie framed not necessarily how wasn't shot. I worry he watches George romeros Martin in widescreen without understanding why the 4:3 was presented in the first place cause in that movies case its considered the superior version. Also in evil deads case the bandaids in the pool of blood gag is gone in the widescreen in nightmare on elm streets case it definitely was meant to be seen in widecreen . Same with films shot in super 35
It is bizarre they won’t show us the set itself before putting up pre-orders. An even slower rollout than what we got for Exorcist.
it’s a masterpiece
It’s just a comedy now. Went to the flix to see it for the first time last year and was one of the funniest films I’d seen in years. It may have been scary at the time but now you just can’t do anything but laugh your ass off it. Still fun though.
Freddy is based on True story on how Wes got the idea to make this movie
God I miss vhs 📼
Looking forward to revisiting this classic on 4K - hope the transfer is dope!
It’s going to be only the first 1, not the rest of them
I do kinda wonder if there will be some sort of insanely priced 8K edition in the future tho, just for the sake of collectors.
I thought Jeff did cover in a video that raw 35 mm is only slightly better than the 4K resolution. Feel like it would only matter for movies shot at that level.
When it come out on 4k
I wonder if you know mate how come most first time movies on 4k are only getting steelbook releases...this .....terminator??? Reservoir dogs?? Terrifier 1&2 ?
I really wished scream factory would've done a box set just like Halloween and Friday the 13th
Who knows, maybe one will come. Sometimes they test the waters first, like how Halloween had a 4K from Lionsgate and then they did the big set.
Yeeeesssss
Johnny depp only in this movie bc of Wes daughter had biggest crush on him
Sweet 😅😅😅😅
WTF is this deep diving niche video? This is exactly the unnecessary information I love to soak in. Thanks a lot for your effort!
not sure 'deep dive' is the best description...lol
Please resurrect the Un-edited X-Rated gore👍👍
Love the video. The DVD is better than the Bluray. 100%. The 4K will hopefully be a SERIOUS Upgrade
Part 2 suck & reboot without him suck too
The UK VHS cover was so much better than the American cover.
