Still one of my favorite horror films ever, I watched dozens of times when I was little. Such a great homage to the classic Hammer Horror flicks of the 50's and 60's
It really is one of the best horror films ever. It's a classic I watch every Halloween season including Beetlejuice.
Johnny Depp had an incredible run of films in the 90s. Sleepy Hollow and The Ninth Gate are my favourites
Ninth Gate is so 🔥 . That's such an underrated film.
I'm afraid I haven't heard of the ninth gate.
@@BigStef71182 I want a 4K UHD of Ninth Gate so bad.
love fear and loathing in las vegas, and dead man myself but sleepy hollow and ninth gate are are just as great guy is super talented
@@greaseball9537 I also think Ed Wood is one of his best movies, and one of his best performances.
Interesting to hear that it was your first time watching Sleepy Hollow. One of the best works by Tim Burton! ❤
Dont forget Michel Gambon's Dumbledore.
I can't wait to pick this up.
Sleepy Hollow is the personal favourite of mine from Tim Burton and still is one of my favourite film adaptations of Washington Irving’s famous gothic short story. Nice to see that Paramount gone back on the original camera negatives and restored the film in 4K glory, but sadly I never own it on my collection so will be grabbing it if the price is dropped.
I actually grew up in the time when Johnny Depp has become a superstar and Sleepy Hollow has gave him one of his most popular performances in his film career.
I only have "Sleepy Hollow" on DVD so far, so this makes upgrading even easier - which I will definitely do, because I love that film.
I purchased this approximately a fortnight ago on DVD, which is all I could find. THEN I saw your video!!!! I had to have this in a higher quality format, as it's one of my favorite films, so I promptly purchased this. Thanks for the heads up, man!
the steel book link is for Mask of the Phantasm
Tim Burton's attempt at making a Hammer film, underlined by Christopher Lee being the one who sends Ichabod to Sleepy Hollow is absolutely gorgeous and dripping with atmosphere. It's worth seeing just to appreciate the imagery.
Also, it's my favorite Depp performance. I love how he turns Ichabod into a heroic fraidy-cat, especially his habit of ducking behind anyone else for cover. And at one point he's even using his kid sidekick as a human shield. Oh and Christopher Walken as the Horseman is all the recommendation you need to watch it!
It actually came out the weekend of Thanksgiving in 1999 and it was a blast seeing it in theaters. I've only watched it on dvd up until the point of just purchasing the 4k. I'm looking forward to watching it once it cools down and we get further into fall.
Great review Jeff!! I’m so glad you made a great experience out of some top tier Tim Burton! As I said on your instagram post…truly a great film for a dreary New England’s eve (as a resident of upstate NY, I still qualify that at New England haha😉). This is a solid film with a phenomenal transfer onto 4k! Thanks again for the review, Jeff and long live physical media!
Remember watching this back when it was first released on VHS, loved it. Its the only format I have watched this movie on. I have just purchased this on 4k Steelbook but yet to check it out. Great review man.
Fingers crossed we get Ed Wood on 4K soon. Probably the best movie for both Burton and Depp
It was a dahk and stoahmy night, when Jeff finally watched Sleepy Hollow...
So glad you reviewed this. The 4k is definitely an improvement over the Blu-Ray which I still own and in my opinion was not that great. Awesome Review!
Sounds like a very pleasant experience! I'm glad you enjoyed
Loved this transfer! Sleepy Hollow is in my top 5 films. If only The Exorcist would have got this level of treatment for it’s 4K.
blast from the past! 90's Johnny Depp is pretty epic.
Great review…I picked this up a few weeks ago, I was going to wait for a price drop but I had to have the steelbook-book edition.
Always been one of my most favorite movies and, I believe, one of the first that I ever saw. Thrilled to finally get it on 4K and I was actually quite surprised and the perceived degree of improvement to the audio.
Burton's homage to the Hammer horror films. I've been waiting for this on 4k.
I watch this movie every Halloween night with Abbot and Costello meet Frankenstein.
I love watching this one in the fall! I didn't pre-order it because Paramount transfers have been spotty for me in the past, but I ordered it late last week and can't wait to watch it.
Love the review! This was a horror movie that I grew up watching, so it's nice to finally have a solid upgrade from my old DVD!
By the way, the Best Buy link redirects to Mask of the Phantasm 4K, not Sleepy Hollow. Just thought you might want to know.
Thought this looked amazing. Even though it was also released by Paramount here in the UK, it includes the old UK blu-ray that doesn't have Burton's commentary, interviews, and the trailers. Madness!
"How many movies do you have both Saruman and Emperor Palpatine?" I can think of a couple that come to mind. 😉
In all seriousness, though. I've seen this movie enough times that I'm kinda surprised at myself for not owning a copy before now. Definitely gonna pick this one up.
Wow, can't believe a horror buff like yourself hadn't seen this.
I watched it again recently for the first time in a good few years and it was a lot of fun. Both the picture and audio, excellent.
A great movie and even better when watched at night in Autumn.
Thanks for keeping us informed, Jeff! I've seen this movie twice, well over a decade ago as a kid and didn't appreciate it because I wasn't much of a horror fan back then. I've been thinking about revisiting it via HBO Max, and I'm glad to know that that's a no-go. I'll definitely pick up this 4K release and give it the proper rewatch it deserves.
literally cancelled my order only to re-order it with your link. Keep up the awesome videos my man.
This is one of my favorite Halloween movies that I watch ever year. Sleepy Hollow was actually the first R-rated horror movie I watched because I loved the atmosphere of 18th century Puritan America and I thought the Headless Horseman was really cool! I'm not a huge Tim Burton fan, but this is perhaps my favorite film of his next to Beetlejuice.
My actual favorite Halloween time films used to be the first Halloween, then it became Trick 'r Treat when that came out. This might end up ranking up there in terms of a favorite "fall" movie for me.
Love and want the 4k reviews to continue but I’d also be very here for more just movie reviews/lists/opinions from jeff
Super SUPER pumped for this 4K!! Getting mine next Saturday!
One of my fav T B films after Batman. Had to get the steelbook as I thought the artwork was insane. Watched it on the day of its arrival at 01:00 in the dark and omg Elfmans score is amazing. Such an amazing film it was a defo no brainer to upgrade even with Para's somewhat sketchy recent history...
Great movie that I watched in a Cinema. At that time I went to Cinema a lot. This darker scene is a big test of HDR of modern 4k UHD TV.
Great review!
Interestingly Sleepy Hollow was the 1st dvd I owned, back when it came out in 2000. 👍
Absolutely love this movie. Never saw it in theaters, and have only seen the DVD and Blu-ray, really looking forward to this in 4k. It's such a gorgeous looking film.
I gotta ask... what TV do you use? Is it still the sony? I'm trying to upgrade my TV in the best way
One special feature that would have been nice is interviews with Johnny Deep, Christina Ricci and of course the man himself Tim Burton.
The steelbook is sublime, as the actual book, Sleepy Hollow, is literally embedded inside the packaging.
Does the 4k disk and the Blu-ray both have the updated new scan or is it just the 4k disk/version?
One of my favorites!
I want 4K now!!!
Awesome movie. One of Burton's many greats! Will be looking forward to the 4K!
just saw the pianist 4k mind blown how good the picture quality is
Thank you for the review!
A childhood fav. Glad people are getting to experience it and in 4k no less
Updated - copped and watching tonight with my family. Happy spooky season
Depp and Ricci are great together as always. Also check out The Man Who Cried (2000).
I actually watch this each fall season on VHS on a small player-screen combo TV. It does add to the cosiness of it, but maybe I'll make the upgrade if I can find the 4k somewhere.
My favorite Burton movie. Getting my copy next week.
Can’t believe as much of a movie guy as you are this was your first time seeing this film! The Blu Ray release of this was already good. So I am stoked to pick this 4K up. 🎃 👻
This 4K is a major upgrade from the blu ray. The blu ray made me regret getting rid of my DVD. (I kept my laserdisc though.) I did feel like there were problems with black crush watching on my OLED though.
One of my all time favorite Halloween time films. One of my all time favorite opening credit sequences as well. Danny Elfman score. Yes Jeff 4:50 the only way to watch films.
I remember seeing it. On it original theater run.
Nice, glad you dug it and happy I picked this one up.
Hey Jeff - FYI the Best Buy link doesn’t work right, it goes to “Batman: Mask of the Phantasm” instead. ;) Otherwise, love the review! This is a favorite Halloween movie of mine, so I’ll definitely have to pick this one up.
I grew up watching the made for TV version with Jeff Goldblum. Maybe it's nostalgia, but I still prefer that version. This one was really disappointing for me. There were some great things, but it's way too cheesy overall (typical Tim Burton). I'd love to see Sleepy Hollow get a more serious remake.
Late 90's horror actually has some bangers
Hi Jeff do you know why scream factory where it says scream factory or shout factory on the spine why are some of them in white and most of them are in color
The steelbook link took me to mask of the phantasm
I have Sleepy Hollow on VHS! Looking forward to seeing it on VHS and then on 4K hahaha
West End Girls

Lyrics
Sometimes you're better off dead
There's a gun in your hand it's pointing at your head
You think you're mad, too unstable
Kicking in chairs and knocking down tables
In a restaurant in a West End town
Call the police, there's a mad man around
Running down underground
To a dive bar in a West End town
In a West End town, a dead end world
The East End boys and West End girls
In a West End town, a dead end world
The East End boys and West End girls
West End girls
Too many shadows, whispering voices
Faces on posters, too many choices
If, when, why, what? How much have you got?
Have you got it, do you get it
If so, how often?
Which do you choose
A hard or soft option?
(How much do you need?)
In a West End town, a dead end world
The East End boys and West End girls
In a West End town, a dead end world
The East End boys and West End girls
West End girls
West End girls
In a West End town, a dead end world
The East End boys and West End girls
Ooh, West End town, a dead end world
East End boys, West End girls
West End girls
You got a heart of glass or a heart of stone
Just you wait 'til I get you home
We've got no future
We've got no past
Here today, built to last
In every city, in every nation
From Lake Geneva to the Finland station
(How far have you been?)
In a West End town, a dead end world
The East End boys and West End girls
A West End town, a dead end world
East End boys, West End girls
West End girls
West End girls
West End girls
(How far have you been?)
Girls
Steelbook link took me to mask of the phantasm
Love the no zoom on this one!
You forgot Batman’s Alfred, Harry Potter’s Dumbledor and Uncle Vernon and Amedius’s King Phillip. By the way, have you watched dark horror/thriller Johnny Depp's From Hell?
So far no one that i can think of has mentioned that the slip cover has some sort of foil under the ink or something that peels off pretty easy. if you get it from a shelf like at target that pinches it like a vending machine it will peel off or if you get it from best buy and its a in store pick up they will put the label on it and it will peel off the the color even worse.
Love this movie, one of Tim Burton's best movies. Bought the limited Steelbook edition and it's very nice.
Love this film!!
Guys I've only been collecting 4k movies a few months and I'm already addicted!
Only going to buy the best of the best though. I'm happy with allot of my standard blu rays.
I've just bought today the TCL 55 C83K.
Got it for £640 here in England.
Upgraded from a 43 Hisense.
Does anybody here have any views on TCL?
1500 nits mini led dwarfs my previous Hisense TV.
I've never spent this much on a TV so I'm hoping this TCL blows me away.
Cheers
I bought this the day it came out haven’t watched it yet but have heard it’s one of the best disc of the year gonna watch it tonight
Bro I’m really surprised you haven’t seen this classic film. It’s up there with the greats! I’m definitely upgrading to the 4K version. I don’t have a problem with the English accent! But then I am British!!😂
Idk what happened with the printing on the slipcovers for this one, but I couldn't find a single one that didn't have some of the print rubbed off and the silver showing through. Luckily I was able to find one where it wasn't too obvious
All the copies at my Best Buy had the same thing as well as another title. Was lucky enough to get a steelbook
Same here. Mine was scratched off in areas and looked like a lottery ticket 😂
Like you I have an 4K OLED tv and I had already seen this move before I popped it in my 4k player. It really looks like a different movie and it looks better on my tv than it did when I saw it in theaters. It's interesting that someone mentioned 'The 9th Gate' and that's another movie I'd like to see come to 4k. If you have an OLED tv this is sort of a no brainer to pick this one up. This is a great movie to watch around Halloween with family and friends, or alone for a late night treat. I will say having seen the film several times it does start to lose re-watch appeal. I get bored with the action at the end, but I'm still taken aback by many of the great low light shots throughout the film, and the New England spooky atmosphere. Is it a masterpiece? No. Is it fun every now and then around Halloween? Oh yeah.
Love this movie.
Saw it twice in the cinema
One of my favourite openings of any movie I've seen so far and I 've seen a lot of movies
It is a great movie remember watching this when i was young, maybe time to revisit it :)
Had the 4k steelbook pre-ordered for release at best buy only to have the date changed and then it just goes to delayed and refunded....no reorder option. very disappointed.
Amazing review for an amazing movie
I love this film, I watched it with my girlfriend at the cinema when it came out and at the time I hated Depps performance.. But now I love him in this, it was me that didn't get it.
Love Tim Burton and especially this film but it’s pretty lazy package by Paramount. In the U.K. it’s the same price as many boutique discs I’ve been getting which offer much more and handled with care.
Side note, I’m genuinely intrigued by your difficulty in understanding British accents. Is that common and is it with all regions? I mean, us Brits don’t have a problem with regional American accents and dialects. Maybe we’ve just just been more exposed to them.
Tim burtons classic homage to wonderful hammer horror jeff...and Chris lee as a boost in minor role. I have the blu.ray..but my 4k player i have does upgrade it..but 4k will be purchased 😊hammergazz
Hi , I might be off topic , but when can we expect your long awaited review of PREY .
Excellent fucking film, especially in the fall or a rainy day!
I have waited years before finally buying this movie on physical last year, thinking it would never be released in 4k. Damn… And the previous bluray sucks
I've watched the new 4K version last night. Verdict: Night and Day with the previous blu-ray. Clean, excellent contrast, if you are a fan, I highly recommend!
Sleepy Hollow was the first movie I watched on DVD that blew me away.
seems good except its ashame they dont have any extra editions.
Awesome film, i think this would have had a totally different feel ot it if Johnny Depp"s character was played by someone else !!
The blu-ray transfer sucks, so I'm glad to hear this is better. The DVD picture quality is better than the blu-ray.
Is there any way to get totally away from streaming services and go totally physical media especially someone on a tight budget or someone on ssi or disability ?
Why haven't you done a review of Avatar way of water on 4k bluray?
I saw this at release in the theater, and haven't actually watched it since. The only thing I really remember about the film was that it was simply "decent", which some great atmosphere, and of course Johnny Depp. Picked up the 4K disc last week though, and I think I'm going to hold off and watch it next month. Now that I'm much older, have an OLED, and also had to go through the early 00s "horror" (horrible) movies, this film by comparison will likely end up being better on a rewatch than when I first saw it.
I agree... one of burton's best.
It looks really good
The link for the steelbook took me to a Batman movie. Anyone else notice this?
Always found Tim Burton hit and miss...but this was on the hit side..good movie
Cool af.
Went ahead and decided to watch this, and it looks quite bad. Not sure if it's my C9 or what the deal is, but it's a crushed black carnival. So many details are completely lost in this with Dolby Vision, which is ironic, since it should be able to display details better with challenging dark scenes, but it doesn't. It's really easy to see too. Early on in the graveyard scene where Johnny Depp is investigating, he's wearing an overcoat with white pinstripe highlights on the front. You can only see the upper most highlight that is close to his neck on the right side, yet switch to SDR (player forced) and you see that it actually travels down both sides from top to bottom all the way down to his waist. You simply cannot see that with DV. Then, when he's bending over to look inside the coffin, ALL detail just vanishes from his body/suit and you can't see anything but black.
I'm even viewing in a completely dark room, and my C9 was professionally calibrated as well...
Try it in HDR10.
@@melissalayson7275 I actually forced my player to play it in SDR, which just kind of destroyed the overall contrast, but it did make those highlights return somewhat. Will likely try it again with HDR later.
@Neonmirrorblack I will watch my in copy in HDR10 as well. My TV is a Sony X90J, which also has Dolby Vision, but after what you said, I will not watch it in Dolby Vision. Plus, I have a Panasonic UB-420 4K Blu-ray player, so I can't watch it in Dolby Vision anyway. Plus, the HDR10 looked very good for the Vacation 4K.
@Neonmirrorblack Update. I'm watching it in HDR10, and you can see the details much better.
Not quite Burton’s best, that would be Ed Wood with Johnny Depp 😊
£5.99 on iTunes in 4K.
Not as good as a disc.
But 3 times cheaper .
Doubt if a disc is 3 times better.
But i guess a disc is yours to keep.
Don't forget future Dumbledore.
O love This movie
I found the PQ very middle of the road, there was odd moments where it looked above ok but mostly middle of the road at best
12th!
This is definitely the best Sleepy Hollow has ever looked. Yes it had a different color palette and I knew it would shine in 4K. The Blu ray was awful and tried to brighten up the colors and yea did the film no favors.
