Hello Jeff! How can i watch 4k movies on my laptop. Wich equipment do i need to have, to be able to support 4k resolution!?
I hate being that guy just a heads up I had worked in the video industry for over 20 years, and have been doing UA-cam now for almost 15. If you ever need someone to run one of these by to make sure you haven't missed a release or two let me know!!! (Here you missed the first DVD box-set, very important because it's the fist time we got a lot of the sequels on disc & Like the Jurassic Park one for instance). Would be glad to help.
@@MidnightsEdgeAfterDark exactly (from crystal lake to manhattan 2004) I made a comment about it and he deleted it not sure why.
@@michaelkmusicofficial which is funny cuz he got the oddball VHS release from that and commented on the font and if he had seen the box set he would know why it looks like that that's the font and design from the first box set
1:09 1980*
7:20... There was a very good reason Paramount released the original uncut film on DVD in February 2009. The remake was released on February 13, 2009, and they capitalized on that.
The VHS and CED copies are so iconic to my childhood. The video store next to my dad’s barber shop had them there for rent. CED was the less popular version of laser disc, but it’s the one I was exposed to.
I feel u.I remember CED.I only saw the format for sale at Belk when I was a little kid.I mostly remember VHS,Beta & Laser Disc the most!
There was also the From Crystal Lake to Manhattan boxset. That release had the R rated cut, but was the first release that had any substantial extras on it. The first DVD release also had one of the deaths uncut, but another death was cut even more than the R version.
Not mentioning none of the 2 DVD box sets really shows the lack of info that Jeff mentioned at the beginning… nowadays there’s a new Blu-ray box every year even with the SF box!
I have that edition still and I'm keeping it, despite having 2 movies per disc.
I got that when it first came out, still have it. The disks are beat to hell though. Upgraded to the shout factory one after it came out.
Did you forget the "Crystal Lake to Manhattan" DVD box set that came out in 2004?
Everyone keeps griping about the darkness in Friday's 4k release, they MISSED that it's MISSING an entire transition... (the white flash after the freeze frame and before the title)
A few people have noted that, but I agree-this is a glaring issue with the 4K. And I don’t mind the picture being slightly darker on the 4K compared to the Blu-ray, but it’s not slight-it’s pretty extreme. They needed to tone those black levels down a bit!
@@aaronclick6388 I actually think the picture looks fine (adjust the image and it looks brilliant, in fact I'd say the SHOUT! release looks a bit blown out but at least it has the transition!) Paramount snafuing the transition is a big muck up but doubt they'll fix it
Not only did they fudge with the white flash transition, but they added extra “shadowing” to Betsy Palmer’s face during the shot where she says “kill her mommy”. Unnecessary revisionism. 🤦🏻♂️
Also, did you know on the 2002 VHS with the notoriously hideous artwork, the title sequence is different? Every other time I’ve watched Friday The 13th (on any format) the title flys out at you from the lower right corner. But on the 2002 VHS, it actually comes flying out from the upper left corner instead. Any insight? Do you know if this is like this on the 1994 Gateway VHS as well?
I know that in Australia, the VHS was released in Cut and Uncut versions (the differences were the covers, the Cut version was the shape of the killer with Camp Crystal Lake in it, the Uncut version had Alice in the canoe) it depends on what state you lived in too because either Qld or SA would have the final say in what version is better for the public. I find it rather interesting 🤔
The Ax to the face might be the best kill of any horror movies. Beautifly done. Especially the shadow of the Ax just before it impaled her face. I give it a thumbs up! 👍
The shout factory set is just beautiful as a collectors piece. The box looks amazing and the films have duel sided covers so you can switch the case art if you feel like it. I got it preordered before the posters ran out and they are awesome additions
I see no reason to own the 4k discs, the SHOUT set is honestly the best these movies are going to look.
You missed the 2004 boxed set that had 1 and 2 on one disk. It was also the first release to feature all of the uncut footage albeit on a split screen and as a special feature on the bonus disk. If I remember right, unlike the previous single disk, this was truly the R-rated cut and not the weird hybrid that was on that other disk. Other than that, great video.
Friday the 13th(1980) was made on a budget of $500,000 dollars and it grossed $59.8 million dollars
it was the first independent movie of it’s kind to secure distribution in the USA by a big movie studio
Here in Finland, all Friday the 13th movies were banned. Mostly we had to get those movies from other countries. Some Friday the 13th movies were shown on a channel called "Filmnet".
Everything changed in the beginning of 2001, when our film censorship ended.
I have the FROM CRYSTAL LAKE TO MANHATTAN DVD box set, and I still watch all the discs in that package.
I also had, at some point around 87 or 86 or so, the VHS of JASON LIVES.
They just had the Shout Factory set on sale for $79.99 but it went back up
Over here in the UK we had crazy censorship laws ...and these slashes movies Halloween Friday the 13th and Evil Dead..were trapped in the VHS hell known as ..." Video nasties" ..and were unobtainable domestically ...looking back it was a crazy time and even now the UK still re censors Blu Ray and DVD movies...
I love this series. I look forward to the next one.
I grew up in the UK with the uncut version. I was very surprised when I got the DVD in 2002 here and it was cut.
This was great man thankyou
Love the video, mate, but just gotta tell ya that here in England we had the uncut version on its first VHS release way back in 1982 BUT we had a media violence panic shortly after with lots of what you would call unrated versions of films being released on video (known as the 'video nasty' panic). Warner bros then got cold feet and released the cut version shortly after which was the only version available til about 2003 when they brought the DVD version to Britain for the first time. The only way to tell the difference between the uncut and cut version of the video was that the uncut version had a British X certificate on the box and the cut version had an 18 certificate (The X was replaced by the 18 in December 82 here in the UK). Funnily enough, the X certificate was abolished for the same reason the X was replaced with the NC-17 in the states- namely its negative association with porn. Here, however, porn was pretty much banned so the X was really only for what you would call R and NC-17 movies.
This is such a cool series, and I really look forward to more! Would love for you to do one on the original Evil Dead. I also really really appreciate the way you include comparison pictures for each edition of the movie, love seeing the difference there.
You forgot to note the 2004 'Friday The 13th: The Ultimate Collection' boxed set. It had Parts 1 to 8, with two films per disc, plus an fifth disc of "Killer Extras." The artwork and font was similar to the 2002 VHS you noted.
It didn't come with any swag like the patch or prints, and the disc were each in thin sleeves There was also a VHS release in the late '90s which has the same traditional slipcase, but the film was the same remaster as the DVD (I owned this version on VHS and was surprised to see the clear picture quality compared to the VHS copies I'd rented previously).
Big fan of this series and your videos. 😁 much love from Australia 🇦🇺
Thank U Jeff for doing these history videos!
More of these videos please. Brilliant
I love this series, Jeff!
0:54 "love the way my voice sounds" it. Is. A good voice. Kind of hypnotic yet soothing. Almost Barry White, but, not quite. Moving on!
1:12 "Friday The 13th was released in 1982 w/ middling reviews from critics." Ohhh, sorry Jeff, Ghostface would like to see you. Thank you for you playing.
Friday The 13th was released in May 1980, a week & a half before the release of The Empire Strikes Back.
2:40 The tape shown here is from Christmas1986. Paramount was getting ready to celebrate its 75th anniversary & all of its sell through titles were discounted to 19.95 each. The bug movie that Christmas was Indiana Jones & The Temple of Doom at 29.95 on VHS.
Another great history of video. What's crazy is the only best release of Friday the 13th until 1999, was the LaserDisc version to the film. The Gateway tapes were beyond horrible. It was the equivalent of taping the movie off of the USA Network circa 1986.
Good points, except Jeff didn’t mess up at the 1:12 mark. He says “ Friday the 13th was released in 1980 to middling reviews from critics.”
@@aaronclick6388 yeah, I went back & I checked the close captioning & the way Jeff says the line, it sounded to me as 1982. Even the Closed Captioning picked up the year as 1982
@@wrighthousemedia, I can definitely understand how one could mistakenly think that’s what he said!
I love this series.
Like the video history’s keep them going. Thanks. 🤘👍
Nice review. Love the format!
I’ve currently got foir different copies Of this Movie
1) from the 8 movie set
2) box set
3) anniversary steelbook
4) 4K that just released
You missed out on the blu ray double packs !
I still have my dvd copy of the first Friday the 13th the very first one it came out and have the whole 8 Friday the 13th set that came out in 2004 then the one that came out in 2017 then the scream factory 4k set in 2020 then I have the Steelbook Friday the 13th set too and the red case bluray set that came out last year
Another great video, Jeff!
hey jeff! you missed the 2020 remastered bluray and the red case from last year with the included 4 films remastered. Awesome video as always!
yup that's true. I bought the red case bluray one at best buy recently.
I always loved Paramount's VHS model: black or white spine with the original typeface. You could line up an entire run of Paramount's on a shelf the same way you could line up a Blue Note or impulse! vinyl record collection. Warner Bros. did something similar but the spine colors varied a lot. Columbia just went with a single typeface for each title, which was distinctive, but boring. And Fox was probably the laziest of them all in the early days at least.
Not sure about VHS covers in the 80, as I wasn't born then, but as I grew up in the late 90's-early 2000's in Sweden, VHS cassettes came in plastic clamshell cases with the cover being an insert like a DVD/Blu-Ray. Bough a fair number of second hand VHS's, especially Disney movies, released throughout the 90's that all came with this, and every new movie or TV-Series (Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Disney and Pixar, Land Before Time, Digimon) came in clamshells. Only found out a couple of years ago the cardboard slips seems to have been standard in the US, I only ever had cardboard slips for home video tapes, usually open in one of the long sides.
Awesome video as usual. Have a great weekend.
Many thanks, Jeff. 🙏🏻
Love the home video history series👍
The intro song kinda reminds me of a song from planes trains and automobiles when Steve Martin is on the train. Can't wait tor the 4k
Really missing this series. Hope you'll continue it soon!
Great job. I love your research.
Love this series of home video release.
Great Friday the 13th video format. 😀👍
My Fav Slasher series of all time! We need more new Films!
Great video. On missed release is that Paramount put out a second blu-ray collection in a red case following Scream Factory's box in 2021 and it does indeed include those new restorations from the Shout box, but interestingly in a slightly different aspect ratio. As the first 4 is what I love and to save a few bucks and space, I just ended up getting that latest Paramount set and those films looks great. Also of note is the original theatrical cut of Friday is not included in the set, nor is the part 3 presented in 3d.
the 4k scan from the box set is the best scan .
I'm satisfied with the Paramount 4k. I never had any of the Blu Rays, but I do have fond memories of the DVD.
Good informative video.
You missed the 2020 steel book
Really interesting vid bud good job need to check out that halloween vid
If you're a fan of this film, Movies That Made Me series on Netflix (don't shoot me) has an episode on it that's pretty good with some great behind the scenes stories about its production.
Very good soothing reviews of a slasher film kingmaker !
New sub - there was also a dvd box set - Friday the 13th: From Crystal Lake to Manhattan (DVD 2004 6-Disc Box Set) as well. I purchased when FYI was going out of business due to it being pretty costly for me at the time. Please keep up the incredible content.
The new Friday the 13 th is my new way to watch this movie I love this transfer the black levels are amazing in a pitch black room this looks creepy and so good like watching it for the first time again
Interesting...I would not have even thought people owned VCR's in 1980
It's crazy. I remember my dad getting in a long line at midnight to pay $700 for a Toshiba VCR in 1981/82. It still works.
If I remember correctly, at that point most people didn’t own one. It seems like it was more around the 1983-1986 period when the VCR became a common household item for the average home.
Got em all 😎
Btw in press was confirmed they used 4k scan from scream factory for 4k blu ray
I just had a flashback to my parent’s copy Raiders of the Lost Ark that had that bifold case!!!
Thank for the Review
Scream factory needs to drop a elm st box set like the Friday one!🔥
2004 had the From Crystal Lake to Manhattan DVD set. It had just the first 8. I believe it's also the first one to have part 1 Uncut in the states. Surprised you missed that one
Australia and the UK had the first uncut version released in 1981 on Warner label on VHS. Good video mate 🤜
You forgot the slim pack DVD collection of all eight films. You also forgot the collection edition of eight films with the hockey mask as a collector's item.
I have 9 different versions of this film!
You missed the German Mediabook Mask Collection. For me that’s the best collection. Different mask per movie as cover
Hey nice video man
Great video! Nice to hear about vcd from an American point of view. I am intrigue about the laser disc format that is played on what looks like a turntable. Oh and yes I do watch the videos for the sound of your voice... 🤣🤣🤣
Please do star wars and document all the special edition changes
I have the U.K. pressbook Ari said it’s extremely rare he’s never seen one before
Awesome History...Glad You Recommended This Collection and Well I Should Had Jumped When You Recommended The 1st Columbia Colombia Collection 4k...I So Regret It..Jeff 🙌🙌🙌🙌
I own the Shout Factory box, and many others on vhs dvd and other blu rays. I don't see myself acquiring the 4K of the original for the foreseeable future.
Still shaking my head the white transition was removed from the 4K after the first two counselors are killed!
I'm pretty sure it's also just Paramount owns the rights in Canada as well as the United States.. I still have my original VHS, CED and Betamax
Nightmare one Elms Street Home-Video history, please
BEGGING you to do a video like this for Evil Dead 👀👀👀
HVH series is awesome!
I got the running man 4K on pre order, are you gonna be able to get a review on that 4K before Nov. 1?
No mention of U.K. VHS being uncut out by Warner Brothers
i have a suggestion for a home video history video :
a home video history of the Peanuts specials tv and feature films
the specials and feature films have a interesting history when it comes to each format
in terms of vhs, the peanuts specials started out with media home entertainment and hi tops video and some under Kvc and kartes
before going to paramount and then Warner bros.
whereas the films, a boy named charlie brown and snoopy come home started out through cbs fox video and then later 20th century fox home entertainment (this was Before disney took over fox), before the first two films were distributed through paramount with the later two films, race for your life charlie brown and bon voyage charlie brown
theres like Tons of Home video formats the peanuts movies and specials went through
in terms of the films, it went through betamax, ced and laserdisc, vhs, dvd, and even most recently bluray and digital
whereas with the specials, the formats included all of those as well as 4k uhd
but then you also have peanuts tv shows like the charlie brown and snoopy show in which that was released on kartes on vhs two episodes each
Before paramount had released episodes of charlie brown and snoopy show on vhs and laserdisc
and then later warner bros. on dvd
then you have a peanuts miniseries called this is america charlie brown which ran between october 88 and may 89
for a total of 8 episodes
one of the episodes that has been a staple of airings of charlie brown thanksgiving on ABC in recent years, and before that aired on cbs, is the special, The Mayflower Voyagers
the other specials in the this is america charlie brown miniseries which include: the birth of the constitution, the wright brothers at kitty hawk, the nasa space station, the building of the transcontinental railroad, the great inventors, the smithsoniana and the presidency and the music and heroes of america, havent got a reairing on network tv since their initial airing on cbs
Keep up the good work homie
I'm not a fan of the movie but I love these videos of yours , I have always been interested in the history of older movies and how they were released on home media. Great video, maybe The Thing next ?
I've never seen this but I enjoy Jeff's videos like this
Yoooo can you do Army of Darkness next? That movies got a BUNCH of home media releases
Does the shout factory set for the 3D movie come with the glasses and/or does it work with 3D glasses?
Hey can you do Disneys Fantasia? Its one of my favorite films. Would love to see the home video history for it. Thank you.
When will you be uploading the video history for The Thing?
Great Video, love the history of this classic horror series. FYI, there's also the 40th Anniversary SteelBook version that was released in 2020 and in 2021 there was the 8-Movie Collection released on SteelBook. Love these videos and history lesson, please keep'em coming.
I’ve got both of those…..
And the box set…… and the new 4K
the exact same tin can box set should be rereleased
Great video but you left out the dvd boxset. There was also a UK uncut dvd long before it was released in the US.
Was there a vhs or laserdisc copy in the 80's that showed different versions of Bill & Brenda's murders?
Weren't there some technical issues on some discs from the 2020 set? I vaguely recall some type of replacement program. Is it safe now to pick that set up if you can find it?
Yes it’s safe now! Those were corrected long ago
I ordered mine from Shout factory, it had the replacement disks shrink wrapped to the box 👍
Nice!
What movie were you thinking of doing next?
A nice history but it is not complete. You didn't include the releases on V2000 or VCC.
I have a feeling the "Over Darkening" of the Image you meantioned (for the New 4K)-might be due to the "Anti-Burnin/Advance Source Matching" offered on Newer Oled. Like what happen when watching that One episode of " House of Dragons" on Oled but Not on Qled TVs.
So maybe watch that Version of Friday the 13th on a Different TV type and see if it just as dark or just do that Smart Feature ( which you can turn off by going into Advance Admin Settings)
Friday the 13th final Chapter part 4 Steelbook will be out in January 10 2023 just in time for Friday the 13th date in January
You missed an entire DVD release... The original box set.
I met Adrienne King in 2018, incredibly nice woman, nice to see an actress who isn't self absorbed.
The movie was released in 1980, not 82.
Still great video 😊
Do a review of Return of the Living Dead. I just got this 4K title and I find the audio track distorts often. I wonder if others have experienced this.
I totally agree the UHD was way too dark. It also has too much DNR. I don’t know how anyone could look at those comparisons and think the UHD looks good. You can’t even hardly see Mrs Voorhees in that one shot!
1982...
