Are you interested in making your own laboratory appliances in-office, or are you in need of instructional material to train a new office laboratory technician? If so, consider this easy-to-follow video training course designed to teach anyone, from orthodontist to novice laboratory technician, how to make basic orthodontic appliances. Jay Tyler, a Certified Dental Technician, author, and teacher, is past President of the Tennessee Dental Laboratory Association and has served on the video library committee of the National Association of Dental Laboratories. Mr. Tyler’s skills as a demonstrator are apparent from the very beginning of this course, and his teaching method is genuine and effortless. You can feel that he wants you to be successful at making laboratory appliances.
In general, the videos focus on the four primary laboratory components: wires, acrylic, solder, and expansion jackscrews. Specific topics of the six DVDs are “Tools and Materials,” “Techniques and Exercises,” “Anatomy and Terminology,” “Space Maintainers,” “Retainers,” and “Expanders.” Orthodontists will particularly appreciate the last three on fabricating appliances, including band-and-loops, Hawley retainers, and Hyrax and Schwarz expanders. Each video is full of invaluable laboratory pearls, including methods to control the application of methacrylate, techniques to properly apply solder, and my favorite: how to bend the legs of the jackscrew frame to ensure proper positioning away from the palatal tissue. The appropriate materials science is explained for each critical laboratory step.
Many of the shots are close- ups, often showing just the instructor’s hands at work. To me, each video was mesmerizing and easy to watch, like a cooking show on the Food Network. One of the few drawbacks is that the appliances are fabricated only on gypsum casts. Another is the DVD format; I would have preferred to have the course on a tablet next to me in the laboratory, although Mr. Tyler informs me that an online streaming video will soon be available. His bank of resources already extends well beyond the DVDs: I encourage every orthodontist to visit www.ortholabvideos.com, which contains a wonderful Essix retainer video and links to social-media pages full of additional free laboratory videos and clinical pearls.
Orthodontic Laboratory Basics-The Complete Course has my highest recommendation.
