😊 Hello. I'm glad I came across your video about Our Best restaurant in Smithfield, Henry County, Ky I've never been, but now that I have seen your video I will go there to enjoy some Kentucky country cooking. 😅 Oh and by the way some of us city people do know about that fried 🌽 cornbread. Thanks for the video!
I was at Our Best Restaurant once before and got the fried pork chop which was thick and very tender with a wonderful crisp coating, mashed potates and fried green tomatoes both which were so very good. Also the fried cornbread, which I haven't seen seen I was a child. I highly recommend this place. The staff is friendly and so nice and anything you ask for they will get you. I've never tried any of there pies or cobblers, cause I simply have no room after the portions they give you with your meal. But go and experience this place where good country cooking has no equal.
I live about 20 min away, and it is definitely worth the drive. It feels like eating at my grandparents house. The owners are good people. Congratulations to them for keeping this treasure alive❣️
The food really looked tasty. I can’t believe how many chicken livers that were served. I know your dad would score with the fried green tomatoes. I love them too but can’t get them anywhere locally so I bought some from an Amish gentleman at the Farmers Market $2.00 each. Don’t laugh but I wanted some southern food so went to Cracker Barrel and had fried orca , greens and chicken n dumplings. I got the hot sauce and put it on the greens and orca . Gooood! I had juice in the serving dish and wanted to chug it but my daughter told me, “Don’t you dare “! THEN I saw that you did what I wanted to do but it would not bother me but my kid would be totally embarrassed 🙈 so I kept the peace. She definitely will see you slurp that juice! Long story short????
That was a great story. I have never had a bad meal at Cracker Barrel. It’ll do in a pinch. Love their breakfast. I’m not wasting a morsel and too hungry to be embarrassed..
I grew up about a mile up the road from there and have been eating there since I can remember, my parents worked there when they were growing up and it’s been a staple in the community for generations, hopefully it stays for generations to come
The Fried corn brad is GREAT but you missed one of my faves... the chicken friend pork chops or steaks with gravy. They were still are?) Ok friend. Gonna drop a sad bomb. My mom died atv5:43 am on July 14th 2017. Hurts like hell. Seeing the food you're eating brings back memories. Mom never would have touched fried chicken, fish or livers.pork chops, beef, oh hell yeah. Mashed potatoes, cobbler, green beans. Lord yes. Please, love your parents while they're here. Hurts so much when gone ❤
Um sir… that’s called flapjacks…. Or hoebread here in ky. Not cornbread 😉🫶🏼 my grandma used to make me those when I was little and I couldn’t wait for them to come off the cast iron skillet nice and hot and put some butter on it!!!! YUMMMMMMMMY!
They used to have an old flour/cornmeal facility right across the street from them. I don’t know exactly when it shut down but it’s not there anymore 😢
I lived in Lagrange in the early 80's and the old Smithfield mill that used to be across the street from Our Best was still in operation. Their products were sold in all the little stores in the area, and their flour, whole wheat flour, and corn meal was hard to beat. I agree with everything you said about Our Best, it's still one of my favorite places to eat. I would disagree with one thing you said, though, some city people DO know a little something about fried corn bread. First fried cornbread I remember being served was in a short lived storefront restaurant at 9th and Broadway in Downtown Louisville. Place was called "Van's Gumbo" and just about anything you ordered came with some fried cornbread. It was only open for about a year or so, back in the early 2000's, but their food was fantastic, and they had the best chicken wings I've ever had.
I wish I knew all that great information about the mill before the video. We didn’t know much at the time and were just able to mention it. Unfortunately the fried cornbread in tge city must have been in a gone by era because you don’t get or see it anywhere. Thanks for reaching out.
I’ve been there! Such a great place. They tried to expand in Louisville but the story is there was some mishandling of money and the stores didn’t make it
Hello again sir, new follower here. Just been watching your videos and realize you like greens and can tell what kind they are. I’m curious as to what your favorite is…..Kale, Collard, or Turnip?
I didn’t know your Dad was a Kentucky fan Barry, what went wrong with you? You must’ve been dropped on your head a couple times when you were a baby. Haha love the content, keep up the great work. Also know you don’t do chains and it’s not a restaurant but when Publix grocery opens up soon off Old Henry road you have to do a chicken tender pub sub.
I already have plans for a Pub Sub verses Subway and Jersey Mike’s. I’m a University of Evansville fan. Purple Ace through and through. Thanks for following my channel and for the kind words,
I worked at the one that was open in Louisville, and idk if maybe we got different stuff, but literally nothing was "homemade", especially not the apple butter, it came in a plastic tub 😂 and the fried chicken came frozen and pre breaded.
Totally different those locations. Those were franchise stores. That’s why they went out of business. I talked to the owner and he told me about what you said.
That was probably Fern Creek. I enjoyed them when they first opened, but then they start cutting corners and closed because people could go to Cracker Barrel for mass produced food.
Was born in Campbellsburg live outside of Nashville, Tn my Aunt Willie Belle Tingle Cousin Anita Lynn took my wife Charlene and me (Boogie) to eat there. Wonderful!!!
Also in this video I remember years ago when I arrived in Augusta and I went downtown and not to many people around so I looked at the menu and it was very limited but that didn't bother me but you have different parts of GEORGIA Atlanta being a major hub and where the majority of people live but it's big but not as big as NYC or Los Angeles which is hugh but a lot of land in California from north to south to the border of Mexico
In this part of the video the portions are hugh and I have never heard of fried cornbread maybe baked but fried and I know of cornbread muffins which I enjoy with my tea or coffee like Iike my Danish but no croissant and I know how to make it and I know the base as I am not a pastry chef but I know the basic things like brownies pancakes french toast different pies basic home style things and because I am from Honolulu Hawaii I know how to make Malasadas which is a fritter rolled in sugar and the cousin is the Italian zeppolie which you can find in any Italian bakery but they are rolled in powered sugar and you can pipe pastry cream peanut butter jam and jellies pudding just use your imagination and come up with something lot of different things but it's got to be sweet and not savory and making Italian style tiramisu Italian classic dessert and it's not cheap but I know how to make it because they will charge you 6.00 per portion and I can make it for less than half the price retail as I know the difference between wholesale and retail retail is for the customer you have to know the price structure how it works and know how to purchase in bulk or no because if you mark it to high the consumer won't buy it and you will be stuck with it it's all about volume and turnover numbers is what speaks sales to on a retail level and how you market your products very important and the display is also very important
