first coolant was low as you can see from the warning light on the dash, second if you had paid some attention to the coolant temp arrow you could have prevented everything when it started overheating but you decided to drive at top speed while the engine overheating. Such a shame to see a beauty of a car destroyed by dumb people...

The coolant temp was rising, but the light only came on at 4:40. By that time, the engine was aready smoking.

It hurts to see this W140 not taken care of. From the start, the engine sound was way off, even after 290,000km, with proper maintenance should be as strong as an OM617.
Clunky door sound when closing, seat belt not working, hard gear shifts in early gears. How anyone is willing to drive this on the Autobahn is beyond me...

True words. And I also noticed that they want to drive any diesel car like an aspirated Honda engine, revving all the time them to the red zone even if any diesel car owner know that these emgines are pulling the best in the middle sector when they have all the torque. This is pure diesel engine killing.

Broken cylinderhead - water comes in to cylinder, that's why it was cranking do slowly on the beginning. That's common failure in OM603 an 606 turbo. And should be a warning not to go fast! You've destroyed this engine... No comments!!!

At least three warning lamps were lit, the engine started unwillingly and didn't really run smooth. Ignoring all this and pushing full throttle does not indicate an "experienced driver", as well as starting with non-fastened seat belt does not.

these S350D:s are notorius for head gasket failures. Already from the beginning low coolant light, low washer fluid, bulbs broken, hard to start, no AC. A car with clearly an oblivious owner or they just don't care. Firstly it shouldn't be that slow. Should have around 150hp which should lead to about 13s 0-100 time. this took almost that to go from 60-100...

Dude, I don't think this car is meant to stay in german traffic anymore. You can bet the owner is some junkyard where the car gets disassembled and the good parts are used for selling as repair parts. Another option it gets exported to Africa. Car is driven with red number plates which means it's temporary ones. As I don't think he actually registered the car for a day he probably got the car from some car repair shop or salesman, they can have those available permanently.
Channel owner just got the car to drive one more time and that's probably it. Clicking through his videos he often has the red numbers so he either has somebody where he gets the cars from or he owns them (and the place / shop / whatever where they belong to)

@@Alessandro-nq3tm Keeps the water pump running and coolant circulating - assuming that these subsystems are working correctly, at least.
If you shut it off, the coolant stops and the engine can heat-soak, allowing the hottest parts to be damaged by the overheat.

He blew the radiator, something that could have been very easily avoided by checking the engine temperature gauge. The rule of thumb for the W140 is 90 degree Celsius is the optimal, if you see 100 try to cool the engine (shut off A/C and relax on the gas pedal) , if you see 110 pull over immediately and 120 you're going to blow the radiator.

The engine was already problematic from the factory, because the rear cylinders tended to overheat due to the routing of the water channels, and the cylinder walls also tended to break.
If I remember correctly, experts also advised against revving the car higher than 4000 rpm over a longer period of time because of this problem.
He also does everything right in this situation: he lets the car roll so that the airstream continues to cool it and he turns the ventilation up to the highest temperature.
I strongly suspect that this video was intended to send the engine on its last journey.

Not sure what the armchair experts in the comments are moaning about really.
Driving at that kind of speed you want to be spending most of your time looking ahead, not at the instrument cluster.
The car was only genuinely overheating for 20 seconds or so before he noticed and started to scrub off speed, a few seconds later he turned the heater on to try and use the heater matrix to aid in cooling, then safely exited the autobahn and parked as soon as he could.
Some of you are acting like he drove for several minutes at 200kph with the needle buried in the red and steam billowing out of the vents. Just stop.

The 350 Turbodiesel is not a very durable engine, the longer stroke compared to the 3 liter version did not do it good. And the OM603 Turbo does have problems with cracked cylinder heads, plus a tendency to overheat if the cooling system is not 100%. That said, keeping an eye on the temperature gauge *and* the warning lights would be a good idea.
By the way, the transmission in this thing is a 722.3 that is not electronically controlled. When it slams into gears, it's due to a faulty vacuum system.

    People talking entielly wrong here.
There is 0 warning about the coolant and the temp reading is normal for these old diseles when pushed harder, it is normal. Warning lights are for windshield washer, broken bulb and the SRS or handbrake. There is 0 indication the coolant pipe or tank is about to burst (or whatever happened there). Stop blaiming the driver for not noticing stuff as there was nothing to notice. The only thing that could've been done is reducing the stress on the highway as these engines are generally too weak and prone to various issues in this specific car.

yeah, my father drives the exact same one but its tuned, every time he reaches above 200 km/h he sometimes completely stops on the gas and lets the radiator get some cold air to cool the engine off better and this works. he can drive at around 215 km/h comfortably.

I think the failure may have already occured prior to this video. It probably has a bad head gasket, which would help explain the trouble starting and the poor acceleration.
Unfortunately the block may have cracked hence the steam. These aren't by any means quick in the first place, but the acceleration should be better.
Most people prefer the 3L over this engine.

Why revving it high before it has oil pressure, not to mention before the oil has reached the camshafts, the piston squirters and all bearings of the crankshaft? 🤦‍♂️
Just stupid people rev a 4-stroke engine above 3,000 rpm within the 1st 30 seconds after start!
There is clunking noise from the beginning - you ignore it. 😵‍💫
You hear clearly when entering the highway it's not running right/"round" on all cylinders - you ignore it. 😵‍💫
The coolant temperature exeeds 100 °C - you ignore it. 😵‍💫
When the coolant temperature is at 120 °C you see the steam - and then it's the guild of the car? 🤦‍♂️🤮
