  • Older footage from the Hard Drive! We resurrect a Mark's Models "Windward" glider from the mothball fleet and power it with a vintage OK CUB .049 engine! Fun and frustration are served up in equal portions by this cantankerous old motor but at least it flew!

    Very cool, I actually have a windward that I rescued, still in kit form, in my collection that I need to get built. I fell in love with this plane when I was building a wanderer in the 70's. Fun video guys!

    • @sonex413

      Very cool! That kit goes together super fast and flies great! This particular one flew for years with a power pod above the wing. At first I had a Cox Golden Bee .049 with an exhaust restrictor type throttle Later I converted it to electric with a little Park 250 brushless...which was barely adequate, but worked! More recently, Richie has tried it with the OK Cub as in this video, and a Wen-Mac .049 also. Now it's been swapped for another Cox....
      Good luck with yours!! Thanks for watching .

    I used to fly .049 Ukies in the late 50's to early 60's, I only flew Cox engines on a mix of Cox RTF plastic planes and balsa kits. While I never owned one or even saw one run, I always had the impression the OK Cub and the RTF planes were of a lower quality. Cox ruled that time period, even though I saw a lot of guys flying .049 engines, I never even saw a OK Cub engine in the hands of a flyer, they were pretty much dead. They might have been popular somewhere else, but not here in Okla.

    Hey guys I forgot to mention that was a good story and nice little travel back in time to hear about that OK cub 0.49 motor.. whatta beautiful plane that u have therr.I luv luvvv luv those old school planes and motors... I learned on a Cox 189 Cessna with a 0.49 motor and a cox Sanwa 2 ch radio. That was a very expensive bird for a 10 yr kid back in 1983. I flew crashed , and rebuilt that 🐦 bird from 1983 to 1988. I killed it furr good in 1988.. and then 1 day I found the exact same bird 🐦 with a radio all complete at a flea market for $40.. talk about getting lucky..anyways I just wanted to comment on that Kool viiddd and plane. 👍🙃👍

    Richies last flight reminded me of a light weight thermal glider with 2.8 m wing span I had about 40 years ago. Usually it climed slowly but steadily with a Cox 0.49 BabeBee mounted on a pylon. But sometimes, if motor was not running with highest possible speed, it refused to climb. That´s how you become expert in flying big models for long time at very low altitude. 😁

    • @sonex413

      Right! You get pretty good at seeking thermals while the engine's still running! Thanks for watching and commenting!

    wow nice flight! I'm surprised that little Ok Cub was able to pull that huge glider around! Would love to see more of that plane flying around. I havn't flown nitro/gass planes since the late 90s but recently got a Cox lazy bee witih a Cox .049 in it that I'm looking forward to flying. For what ever reason I want to get back into nitro/gass powered planes. Especially the little cox engine powered ones.

    Bought an OK cub New in 1960.. I NEVER got it to run Still have it tho... Have had dozens of engines over the years. But that pesky OK was the only one that ever defeated me. Curiously that Windward does better without the badly running OK.:-)

    • @sonex413
      @sonex413  3 роки тому

      You think the OK Cub was a tough starter? Guess you never played with a Thunder Tiger motor from the early 80's. To this day, they are our benchmark when discussing crappy running motors! Legendary, just not in a good way!

  • @victormiranda9163
    @victormiranda9163 4 місяці тому

    a fellow named Ralph said the Cox engines are a lot better and thought the reed valve may be the reason.
    my off hand opinion is that castor oil should be the only oil. Mostly you have to run these little ones
    for a while to get predictable performance. in modern terms, If a Cox 094 was 50 watts and a peewee was 25 watts
    this engine is about 35 watts. it sounds like a solid engine.

    Great video! Like many I am also going back to my beginnings (Balsa, silkspan, and Cox engines). I have seen a few of these Herkimer motors available from time to time and you mentioned the availability of parts. Is there a glow plug replacement that is also available? I"d probably take the plunge if I knew I could get a spare plug.

    • @sonex413
      @sonex413  3 роки тому

      Thank you very much! Most OK Cubs use a standard size short reach glow plug so you can use a modern plug and light it with a nicad as is commonly done these days. Back when the Cub came out glow plugs were always driven with a large 1.5 Volt carbon-zinc cell so don't try to drive an original OK plug with anything more than 1.5V. The Herkimer motors are super cool but quirky to run...if you're more interested in problem free reliable operation, go with Cox or better yet Norvel if you can find one. Either one will far outperform the cub. We flew the glider in this video with a Wen Mac .049 too, with results on par with the Herk.
