I've 250 items in my collection, met John and Glen, great guys I first saw swindle, 1988 on channel 4 on the late shift its amazing, I like the fact they put live belsen, and demo outakes which not many people had at the time.
Hi great review, it was glen on the bass during johnny b goode demo 1976, glen was in the band august 1975- feb 1977 that footage was 1976 cheers mate.
Remember taping this off channel 4 in 1983.... Watched it over and over again... Then got the VHS and the DVD..... Got the CD, original vinyl double album and all the singles from the album.... Love it... Definitely needs a restoration job and re-releasing on Blu ray..... Great video Stripey 👍👍
I saw an interview with Julien Temple where he said (I think the bbl but could be wrong) that there is hundreds of hours of footage and you use what you want. Its edited so badly that it doesn't make sense but its still fcuking great. The guy who she strangled on the train was the guy who killed Bambi, that's why she killed him. Russ Meyer was first brought in to make the film but Fox pulled it, the scene with Sting and Bambi being shot were from Meyer version, Julien was brought in after and that's why those scenes are not in the final version.
Great review stripey. Love the pistols. Not watched this in years so good to hear your views on it. I believe the guy in the Johnny rotten mask was johns brother? If u haven’t seen it I recommend the dvd of their Brixton gig in 2007. The extras on it are awesome. Doc of the band giving a tour of London. Very funny. I was lucky enough to meet Paul Cook at the recent guns n roses gig in London this summer. Was so thrilled to meet a pistol!
Cheers Dave, I hadn't watched it in years too. I'll hunt down the Brixton DVD n check it out. You met Cookey...that's awesome mate, I'd be thrilled too
Friggin in the riggin somehing else was a double a side. When i saw it i did not think it would end with friggin in the riggin for some reason, great song loved it.
Great review stripey ! This was the first LP I ever bought.. with my 11th birthday money in 1979 ...got some great songs on it.. I should dig that film out and give it another watch !
Hours and hours and hours of footage was filmed but never used, some for legal reasons and reasons that malcolm kept changing ideas, tensions between julien temple and malcolm were not good while post production was happening, temple was even being locked out of the editing room at some points.
When I saw the movie, I thought during adverts that they cut out,sid at kiosk, and sue catwomen on the yellow car and other scene on the double album, but when I bought it on video I realise it was not the case.but they did take out a few scenes from steve and Mary at the cinema, and there was a few more scenes taken out so they were some differences.
The anarchy footage on the swindle is from the so it goes footage minus the colour, great review I clearly remember going to the cinema in 1981 to watch the movie which at the time carried an x certificate but the manager of the Playhouse didnt give a shit and let everyone in no problem. Julian Temple has got hours of unused footage that has never been used but hopefully one day it will be released on some anniversary disc or something.
Great video as usual. To confuse matters even more in 1980 the science fantasy writer Michael Moorecock published the novel the great rock and roll swindle featuring the pistols and his iconic anti hero Jerry cornelious.... Crazy
That was my first gig I went to, amazing day saw them then at phoenix, then crystal Palace 2002, followed by Manchester 2007 then it was Hammersmith, kind regards.
@@fedlad i saw recently ten pole tudor, chelsea, buzzcocks,uk subs, all on the same tour, my home town leic had a big rock thing at the museum, lots of things to do with the pistols, my first gig i went was the same finsbury park, only 22 went in the mospit it was fun but scary.
Something I've never heard mentioned anywhere before, is the whole Lessons 1-10 thing. Watch a film by Freddie Francis called Mumsy, Nanny, Sonny and Girlie (or Girly in the US), it has exactly the same device. Julian (or probably Malcolm) had clearly seen the earlier film. It's also worth mentioning that the film was originally going to be directed by Russ Meyer under the title of Who killed Bambi? They shot for 3 days before the money fell through. Clips of Who killed Bambi? can be found here on YT in a Jonathon Ross documentary called The Incredibly Strange Picture Show (the Russ Meyer episode).
If you fancy watching it again, watch with the Julien Temple commentary, its pretty cool. The girl was, well its debatable, It wasn't Soo Catwoman, some say it was Judy Troll, other say it was Faye Hart but she was 15 at the time and her parents were more concerned over her hair being cut rather than her age ! lol, but different times Watched the film so many times, love it, got the album and the poster and tons of Sex Pistols stuff, worth a fortune these days, got 2 flags and they're going for over 6 grand on Ebay !! Great review, subbed. The first version on the dvd was a cardboard case, not the plastic generic case you have there, that's probably why its that price, crazy though
When I first saw this I was very young, 12 maybe. It had just been released on VHS, I took it to my friends to watch as I didn’t have a VCR. I’d had the record a while, and found it fascinating and also Never Mind the Bollocks which is still my all time favorite album. I couldn’t understand what it was about but relished finally seeing the Pistols, especially Sid. I’ve watched it many times now. Part of me thinks it made a mockery of something important which is why John wanted no part in it. But having said that I still enjoy watching it…like a fine wine it’s improved with age🤩
Lots of obscure bits of footage were used in the movie. The live clip while Bernard Partridge is talking is supposedly from Manchester Electric Circus in December 1976 on the Anarchy tour. However, the crowd noise audio doesn't match the video as the band are clearly in mid song
@@fedlad I've got the bootleg from Manchester as I'm a keen collector, I would say its from 1976 gig not sure which one, but I know it's not Leeds or cleethorpes kind regards.
great movie, great LP, I still have my old big box VHS, the twite pie audio (I thought I saw a pussy cat) in the hotel scene is removed on the DVD version for some reason. And now you need to review Rude Boy the Clash movie lol.
Yet another fantastic video, Hanx Stripey! Your the go to guy for awesome content.... Love UK Punk,Post Punk n New Wave. Not to mention your cool accent
Yes......Ed Tudorpole from Tenpole Tudor - mad as a box of frogs.....& a great guy too. Plus my favourite host of The Crystal Maze. Great review video. Thanks for posting.
Myself (boris), Christopher Thompson and avid Jenkins, saw this film in 1981 at the Sheffield City Library's cinema. We had to argue we were in the sixth form in order to get in. We all remember a scene with Ronnie Biggs in a car shouting Cosh the Driver. Christ bought a pirate VHS copy which also had COsh the Driver in. Never seen a version with it in since. I loved the film; it was messy, which I thought was deliberate.
They took a few scenes out of the broadcast steve and mary in the cinema, obvious reasons, ronnie biggs bits taken, you need hands malcy one scene took out and when you see people standing and theres a sid poster in the background, this xmas im singing my way sex pistols should be fun.
I remember walking into Seditionaries and Bela handing me the phone. The director's assistant said they wanted to shoot a scene with Malcolm as a school teacher in a classroom teaching all about Anarchy to the pupils, and me in the class printing T shirts. That scene never came to fruition but I did go to an aero drome in Sussex where the mannequin's were being hanged by the angry mob. I did the shirts for that scene. Also, John told me he was kicked out of the premier of the film because he has a small bottle of whiskey in his jacket pocket.
I saw this when I was 14 or 15 in 81. It was showing at my local art centre cinema and luckily they weren't bothered about checking my age. At the time I thought it was amazingly cool watching a film about the Pistols on the big screen, my favourite band. I've watched it a few times over the past decades and I think it's abysmal! It's like a bad nightmare or a strange drug trip the way it's all over the place and crazy random.
The Sex Pistols were the first punk band. This film shows it.Instead of ripping off new bands record companies so often did,Malcolm McClaren did it too them, but the band were ripped off aswell They won a court case a few years later to get their cut of the money they wanted.
Aged 15 I recorded this by accident one night in 1989 as it was on C4 one Sunday night after the American Football highlights I used to VHS every week. My dad asked me why I was recording such rubbish which intruiged me straight away. Totqlly changed my life overnight, I'd never heard a rock band sound so good.
First saw the film in 1983 at a cinema in Hastings. Got the album on vinyl and c.d., love the film and the soundtrack. SwINdle, It's A sWiNdLe.💰🎸🎷🎤🔗🔒⛓️📽️

Cmo'n warm it up a tad lad, i will edit a bit....now on CD.......got the whole collection... now releasing on blueray........ got it...erm say what???? Swindle it's a swindle haha, and what did you learn ? 79 quid was the original VHS hahaha along with the rest of it, no matter how much you paid still fucking legend
The guy wearing the "Johnny Rotten mask" (8:42) is actually John Lydons' real life brother! 🤣😂😅
i thought he looked really similar :O
I've 250 items in my collection, met John and Glen, great guys I first saw swindle, 1988 on channel 4 on the late shift its amazing, I like the fact they put live belsen, and demo outakes which not many people had at the time.

Wow Mark, you've got the lot, nice one 👍 cheers pal
Taped off C4 also . They cut the offensive bits out of No one is innocent and a few other scenes. Still have that tape .
I saw an interview with Julien Temple where he said (I think the bbl but could be wrong) that there is hundreds of hours of footage and you use what you want.

Seen them live six times on reunion tours amazing band.
Only time I saw them was Finsbury Park in 1996, with Iggy Pop, Buzzcocks and Stiff Little Fingers supporting. Still one of my all time favourite gigs

Love it. Saw it the first time at my local cinema in Buxton,1980, when I was 14.

Where the Dong gone? tis a mystery that one
I always thought thought the film was awful, best thing about it was the advertising poster.
