  • Friends, I recently traveled to Annapolis, MD, at the request of the United States Naval Academy to address their sailors on topics of spiritual and pastoral importance. While on my visit, I toured the storied city, exploring its historical and religious legacy and commenting upon relevant theological topics.
During the colonial times, the land surrounding Annapolis served as a refuge for Catholics who came to America.
As I stood in the beautiful nave of St. Mary’s, I contemplated the importance of Catholic presence in public life and how religious liberty and freedom of expression protects our faith.

My journey back to the Catholic Church began in Annapolis at St. John's College. It's not a Catholic school, but it is where I sang Palestrina's Sicut Cervus and Mozart's Ave Verum Corpus in Mr. May's Freshman Chorus. I don't know the words to any lullabies so those are the songs I have sung and sing to my two kids. Thank you for posting this video, Bishop Barron!

How absolutely lovely! Thank you, Bishop Barron.
Let us not forget our Baptist brethren who did so much to give us Catholics our freedom after the Revolutionary War. We owe them much gratitude for pleading the cause of separation of church and state, a state that had made many laws against us Catholics. (Who, in my case, were my ancestors on my mother's side...I'm descended from the famous 25 Catholic families under Basil Hayden.)

As a Scotsman who loves the United States, I only know Annapolis from the pages of National Geographic.
There is a lovely story by F Scott Fitzgerald, Afternoon of an Author, in which he described church bells, playing Maryland, My Maryland.

Thank you for reviving memories. I attended St Mary's High School. History class was in the church basement. The house of Charles Carroll, only Catholic signer of the Declaration is on the parish property behind the church, practiced music for school masses there and graduated at the gardens.

There was a period just before the Revolutionary War where it was illegal to practice Catholicism in what is now Maryland. The prohibition was removed not long after the war.

Your eminence, the Vatican has asked priest to 'sprinkle' ashes on the heads of the faithful rather than make the sign of the cross on the foreheads this Ash Wednesday due to continued precautions to Covid19. The celebrant will also proclaim once "Remember that you out are dust and to dust you will return" rather than to each person who approaches the alter. A big break with tradition in my humble opinion. End of the world?. Not yet. But further proof our church is under attack (mostly from within) leaving the faithful confused and hopeless. I've no doubt you'll comply. But care to comment?.

Thomas: This method of distributing ashes has been used in the Diocese of Rome for quite a few years now.

Bishop, please keep touring and expressing peace through America. I believe that is what the original 7 brothers and sisters would have done, as I have read about them. In Mitchell SD, they were United with Jesuits. God bless you 🙏❣️😇🎶🎵🌼.
