- Friends, I recently traveled to Annapolis, MD, at the request of the United States Naval Academy to address their sailors on topics of spiritual and pastoral importance. While on my visit, I toured the storied city, exploring its historical and religious legacy and commenting upon relevant theological topics.
During the colonial times, the land surrounding Annapolis served as a refuge for Catholics who came to America.
As I stood in the beautiful nave of St. Mary’s, I contemplated the importance of Catholic presence in public life and how religious liberty and freedom of expression protects our faith.

"It's divine providence we ran into you"
From 1:40 took my breath away...
How beautifully sculptured???
My journey back to the Catholic Church began in Annapolis at St. John's College. It's not a Catholic school, but it is where I sang Palestrina's Sicut Cervus and Mozart's Ave Verum Corpus in Mr. May's Freshman Chorus. I don't know the words to any lullabies so those are the songs I have sung and sing to my two kids. Thank you for posting this video, Bishop Barron!
Wow! A beautiful Church!
The old Churches are almost always beautifully done! Thank you Bishop Barron!
AHH I went to USNA and would go to mass at St. Mary’s! I’m soooo jealous!!
I loved to see the inside of that church and know about the stars on the ceiling. Thank you. We lived in MD for 8 years but I didn’t know that. Thank You 🙏🏼
Love the Bach! More Bach please.
How absolutely lovely! Thank you, Bishop Barron.
Let us not forget our Baptist brethren who did so much to give us Catholics our freedom after the Revolutionary War. We owe them much gratitude for pleading the cause of separation of church and state, a state that had made many laws against us Catholics. (Who, in my case, were my ancestors on my mother's side...I'm descended from the famous 25 Catholic families under Basil Hayden.)
Thanks I love this
I was thrilled to learn that you visited my parish and saw our lovely crown jewel, St. Mary's Annapolis, Bishop Barron! God bless you!
As a Scotsman who loves the United States, I only know Annapolis from the pages of National Geographic.
There is a lovely story by F Scott Fitzgerald, Afternoon of an Author, in which he described church bells, playing Maryland, My Maryland.
Beautiful church
my father in law graduated from the us na there at annapolis in 1928 , rear admiral milton t. dayton. his plaque is there. my son saw. i have a large family history of naval and marine corps humans. and a huge chunk of my family derives from baltimore severna park, kensington, chevy chase and baltimore proper. i personally was baptised in america's first cathedral. the basilica of the assumption of the bvm. say hello to my family's stomping grounds. please enjoy.
As a fact of rejoicing in the Lord's teaching, Religious liberty in America is a true blessing.
Looks like a fun time.AMDG.
Love these story telling video pieces you put out from time to time!
ps can you please also post your talk or homily to the naval academy. thanks.
Thank you for reviving memories. I attended St Mary's High School. History class was in the church basement. The house of Charles Carroll, only Catholic signer of the Declaration is on the parish property behind the church, practiced music for school masses there and graduated at the gardens.
I love Annapolis. I didn’t know St John Neumann was involved in building this church ❤️ This Saint adopted me
LOVE the classical music in the background! Thank you Bishop Barron for modeling the beautiful in our traditions.
I agree more Bach!
Lovely to be shown around this beautiful church by BB. What a treat esp when so far away in UK, Northumberland. Thank you BB and WOF every blessing🇬🇧🙏❤️
Very cool to see the history in different places around the country!
There was a period just before the Revolutionary War where it was illegal to practice Catholicism in what is now Maryland. The prohibition was removed not long after the war.
🤩🙏🕊👼🏼💐
When was this filmed?
Gracias por esa hermosa música clásica y su acompañamiento alegre, Fr. Bishop Barron!
Welcome to the East side Bishop Barron!
Your eminence, the Vatican has asked priest to 'sprinkle' ashes on the heads of the faithful rather than make the sign of the cross on the foreheads this Ash Wednesday due to continued precautions to Covid19. The celebrant will also proclaim once "Remember that you out are dust and to dust you will return" rather than to each person who approaches the alter. A big break with tradition in my humble opinion. End of the world?. Not yet. But further proof our church is under attack (mostly from within) leaving the faithful confused and hopeless. I've no doubt you'll comply. But care to comment?.
Thomas: This method of distributing ashes has been used in the Diocese of Rome for quite a few years now.
...I improperly addressed you as 'Your eminence. My mistake. Eastern rite greeting. My apologies. Your excellency...
Religious freedom is extremely important. Must be advocated and protected. Thanks for these Annapolis videos.
Bishop, please keep touring and expressing peace through America. I believe that is what the original 7 brothers and sisters would have done, as I have read about them. In Mitchell SD, they were United with Jesuits. God bless you 🙏❣️😇🎶🎵🌼.
Welcome to Maryland Bishop Barron!! Hope your talk goes well tomorrow at the Naval Academy!!
Ah yes a Brandenburg Concerto sets the tone. What an interesting video to start my day on, beautiful church !Thanks for sharing Bishop Barron.

Now all the non-Marylanders will have the impression that Annapolis is a baroque city in Maryland.
