It was a fateful day, August 27, 1990, when an unimaginable tragedy took place at East Troy, Wisconsin. The world was still buzzing with excitement and admiration after witnessing an electrifying concert at the Alpine Valley Festival that featured legendary performers such as Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, and the immensely talented Vaughan brothers, Jimmie and Stevie Ray.
Stevie Ray Vaughan was no stranger to the music world. Born on October 3, 1954 in Dallas, Texas, he became inspired by music at an early age, especially by the guitar playing of his older brother Jimmie. Even before he reached puberty, Stevie had taught himself to play guitar.
During his high school years, Vaughan stayed up at night playing guitar at clubs in Deep Ellum in Dallas. He recorded a song for Stax Records in 1969 with a local band. In his sophomore year, he enrolled in an experimental arts program at Southern Methodist University specifically for talented high school students in the field of art. However, the program could not motivate him to stay in school.

The real cause of this accident is that the pilot flew into IFR conditions without being certified or trained adequately. This is what also killed Kobe Bryant's group and Buddy Holly's entourage. Helicopters are more dangerous than planes because they have so many single failure points. One nut comes loose and your going down, but taking off in fog at night in a hilly area without instrument training is virtual suicide. The pilot killed SRV through his incompetence. Before flying in bad weather with any pilot, make sure he is IFR qualified before taking off, and if in any doubt, don't go with him. You'll live longer.

In 71 I was working offshore pipeline being ferried back and forth by helicopters. They would change pilots after so many hrs as you know. The Vietnam trained pilots are the best; but when the company sent company trained we didn't know if we would make it back.

✔️ FINALLY! I had to scroll through about a mile of posts before finding one that's actually relevant to the primary subject matter of the video! It's inexcusable that a helicopter company would hire such an inexperienced pilot. I've never even been a passenger in a helicopter, let alone a pilot. But even I can think up 3 sure-fire methods of avoiding this helicopter tragedy.
👉 1). It just seems like common sense to me that you'd make damn SURE that you were fully aware of any local terrain features that could cause problems for you.
👉 2). Even if the pilot didn't know how to fly by gauges, he must've AT LEAST known how to use a fkng compass! All he had to do is to take note of the relative direction of the mountain, so that he could've AVOIDED flying into the damn thing!
👉 3). He could've simply taken off and gone straight up until the helicopter's altitude was above the height of the summit of that hill. _THEN_ he could've started travelling towards the destination.

I was there, I literally walked past the helicopters on my way to my car. It was a week after my mother died and my sister and I went both nights to lift our spirits. I remember the initial radio reports, everyone thought it was Clapton that went down. I still have the recording of his final song ever, a 14+ minute version of Sweet Home Chicago, with Jimmy Lee, Eric Claption, Robert Cray and Buddy Guy

It left dirty streaks on my car. I didn’t wash it for weeks I was so depressed. There was a 6th guitarist on stage for Sweet Home Chicago. Clapton’s sideman Phil Palmer was right there with the other 5. History seems to forgot poor old Phil.

You are truly blessed to see 2 of the most famous Texas blues guitarists playing together, AND you shook Stevie's hand!
When Albert was in Jacksonville, in 1993, just before he died, performing at the Florida Theater, during one song, he surprised and thrilled everyone, when he walked down 1 aisle all the way to the back lobby, while still playing the song, and several people, including me, joyfully followed him, and he stood there playing the song with one hand, while shaking the hands of the people around him with the other, including, of course, me. I was so amused and thrilled, I thought I was going to pass out from euphoria! I have loved and had Albert Collins in my music collection, ever since I heard 'Cold Snap' in 1988.
So, the whole time I was keeping beat, by saying "1....2.....!!" Over and over again, LOL.
When he shook my hand, it felt like his whole hand was one big callous. LOL!
I never got to see Stevie in concert, but the memory of shaking Albert's hand was epic. Especially since he passed away soon after.
But you know, him and Stevie Ray ARE JAMMING THEIR ASSES OFF every day up in heaven

I met Stevie Ray Vaughn at an A.A. meeting a week or two before he died. The meeting name was "Midtown" and was held in a large church basement in D.C. It was a speaker meeting so I didn't hear him share or anything. I had been clean and sober for about two and a half months - it's been 33 years now. Afterwards he was swarmed by a whole bunch of people really excited to meet him. He seemed to me to be the coolest dude. Couldn't believe it when I heard his helicopter crashed. Rest in peace.

His skillset of voice, tone, and playing remains very very esteemed and stands alone all his own. He was getting that voice and skill even better and by then was truly on top of his game when he passed which is so hard to examine. I miss him among so many others who also miss him. I had a ticket to see him in concert in Louisville the spring of 1990 but I sold it to a neighbor who needed an additional ticket for an out of town guest. I’m still kicking myself for that. His death was such a senseless loss of an amazing gift to the world. RIP, SRV

I had a ticket to see Randy Rhoads with Ozzy - about two weeks after Randy was killed. That concert was postponed and I think the guy from Night Ranger filled in for the make-up date.

I knew Stevie from the Chicago blues scene. We were playing at Buddy Guys club when Stevie was at Alpine when the helicopter crashed he was on his way back to Chicago to sit in with us at Buddy's place. Stevie had sit in with us the night before also at Buddy's place after the alpine concert. He did a couple of nights at Alpine in a row. We didn't know that would be the last time that we would see him. He is dearly missed.

Most of the other info on this is accurate except for that map. I do know they took the wreckage to Rock county airport in Janesville for examination. His body was taken to a funeral home in East Troy where his brother identified him. Me living not far from the venue has intrigued me to learn more about this accident.

@@johngiles132 I’m sure it’s very accurate, because they correctly identified Stevie’s “sister in law” *Martha Vaughan. 🙄
      *Martha is his mother.

It was a very sad day. It reminded me of the passing of Buddy Holly, Richie Vallens, and Big Boppa whose plane crashed in icy conditions. I was a teenager then. Many other musos have passed similarly RIP. all.

I was 18 at the time and my guitar player had JUST met Stevie two weeks prior and signed his back stage pass decal, where my buddy Adam proudly took off the rear paper and applied the decal to his black '87 Strat. Little did he know two weeks later it would be priceless. SRV was the player responsible for bringing back the blues to the masses.

You can just use the initials "SRV" and music fans, guitar fans, blues fans will know exactly who that is, no doubt. The wonder of Dallas, Texas. I lived there 3 years after his death, visited Austin periodically never having seen him live. Sad about that. He is on my top five guitarists of all time. #1 blues guitarist. Life taken so young, years of musical wonder ahead of him. Rest his spirit, he is not forgotten. I still listen to him frequently as July 2023 just to pin this date. Some lyrics (written by Doyle Bramhall/Barbara Logan) from "Life by the Drop" which is my favorite SRV tune:
"No wasted time, we're alive today
Churning up the past, there's no easier way
Time's been between us, a means to an end
God it's good to be here walking together my friend.
    We're living our dreams
    My mind's stopped aching, '
That's how it happened living life by the drop
That's how it happened living life by the drop
That's how it happened living life by the drop."
