Yup, even brandishing a knife, in legitimate self defense, better have your legal game on point, because now you're the crazy guy with a knife when they call the cops. If you're in a legitimate fight for your life, absolutely, fight to win, but you're now in a deadly force encounter and one minor misstep legally with a DA who has a wild hair for another conviction, well, the modern court room is someplace I'd like to avoid at all cost. The thing that people who don't understand why we carry knives fail to realize, is that their stance is the odd one throughout the entirety of human history until only the past couple of generations. That the edged tool, aside perhaps from the harnessing of fire, was one of the most revolutionary breakthroughs of all mankind, likely to the degree that it shaped our evolution as a species. This leads to the logical conclusion (and answer to those who don't understand carrying knives or see it as uncivilized), that without knives there would be no civilization in which to be uncivilized in the first place. In order to protect our knife rights for the future, we need to hold the stance, and point it out to others that don't understand, that the edged tool is essential, and that the idea of not carrying a knife is the ridiculous one.

and they just look a bit different but its still a blade and hande that folds. what the point? (except just collecting)

I always tell people that you never realize how handy a pocket knife is until you start carrying one. I’ve carried one since age 9, starting with SAKs and eventually realized that the blade covered most of my needs. I also ride a motorcycle so I always have a backpack where I keep tools I might need, including a beater knife or two.
I use the knife for all kinds of stuff.. packages/boxes, a handful of work tasks, food, whatever needs a cut..
As for nice knives.. I carry one every day and I just like having a nice high quality object to handle and fiddle with. I don’t really consider myself a collector and buy them to use, so considering that I usually edc any particular knife for years before I upgrade, a could hundred bucks isn’t all that much overall.. for example, the crk in my pocket cost half of what my annual insurance payment, and I use/enjoy it much more than my insurance policy.

My thoughts on the self defense angle: no judgement, just hoping to share my experience and see if it resonates with y'all.
I used to work as a Domestic Violence Survivor's advocate in Franklin County Kansas (That's Ottawa KS, one county South of KU), and people asked me a *LOT* why I didn't carry a gun.
In my experience, when a violent man sees you talking to his ex girlfriend at the county courthouse and assumes you're her new boyfriend, your goal is to de-escalate the situation. Like yeah, run if you have to, but if it gets to the point where the best option is to run? You've already failed to de-escalate.
You know what escalates the hell out of a situation? The pissed off guy you're talking to realizing you're strapped, or you pulling a knife. I actually switch out my carry to a Spyderco Chaparal (or nothing at all) if I know I'm heading into a situation where conflict is likely, so that my stupid man brain raised on action movies doesn't convince me that stabbing a guy is a good life decision. Or, to be more realistic, pulling a knife, getting punched in the face, and then getting stabbed with my own knife.

I do shipping and receiving in a warehouse and pipe yard loading, unloading freight and pipe trucks and I use my R2D2 for opening crates, cutting nylon banding, zip ties, slicing 7' wide cardboard slabs and foam wrapping to for packaging powder coated fence and gate panels, opening freight, cutting tape, and the occasional trailer straps etc etc. EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. I've been carrying an collecting knives since I was around 13 years old I'm 34 now and own 22 different folders and 6 fixed blades for hunting fishing etc. A standard box cutter can do all these things but eventually you'll have to find and then beg your superintendent for a fresh blade, or you drop the thing from pocket height and it detonates into 40 damned pieces when it hits the floor. With my R2D2 on the other hand I can sharpen it during my breaks if I find its getting dull ,its survived multiple drops from heights of about 30 feet up sometimes, as well as open and close it with my work gloves on or off far quicker and all those seconds add up when I got dead lines to meet also its never opened in my pocket and cut me or fell out of my pocket and got lost during the 50th time I had to get in and out my forklift that day lol. My point here is that an in-disposable beats a disposable tool any day of the week. Great vid btw, not that I personally need the justifications but its good to have the extra ammo the next time I'll eventually have to have this conversation with a co worker lol

    Here is a real story:
I went on a date with the girl i liked for some time. We were walking down the road and this poor old woman was selling roses there in a small stall as couples walk by that place a lot here. She claimed that all these roses were grown by her in her own garden. My date, she said "oh wow" (not in english, we are from India). I picked for her the biggest one. We walked some distance and I noticed that the rose stem wasn't cleaned properly, it still had some thorns. I pointed it out she said she'll be careful with it. I asked for the rose, took out my pocket knife and cleaned the thorns. She was like "why do you have a knife in your pocket" I replied with a cheesy line "so that i can care for the people I like better" She blushed and looked visibly impressed... We would go on 3 more dates after that and use this knife many times. We are together now.
Yes... I sure did feel like a champ every time.

I dont believe in tactical use. A knife will only bring you jail time. Heavy use is really not an EDC catagory. The uses you outline could all be done with a Chaparral or a traditional folder.
A big automatic jobby or a heavy Hinderer type knife are for knife fans. I have 15 folding knives and there is no objective reason why.

Don't get me wrong, I love and use my knives, but it sounds like you would benefit greatly from a Leatherman Micra. It's tiny, you can put it in your 5th pocket and forget about it. It handles so many of the the things on your list, especially zip ties, much better than a knife and can do even more. And it's a tiny backup blade. If you carried one for a week or two I just about guarantee you'd see that it'd make your life much easier.

Either disassemble window taking 30 minutes to do it "right" to get at it with a razor knife, or take 30 seconds and stuff the skinny PM2 in the tiny gap and presto, 29 minutes saved.

Here's a good reason: trust in the wisdom of our ancestors. The most common tools we find in the archaeological record are probably knives, and I dare say pocketknives at that. If you happen upon a sharpened piece of flint, chert, or obsidian, someone obviously found it to be incredibly useful to have a knife on their person. And those materials weren't just laying around everywhere, people traded for them with others who lived near large deposits of specific kinds of stones that would fracture to form a good edge. So don't count on using whatever you find laying around to do the job, keep a nice general purpose tool at hand. Carry a knife.

Because I can. Because the time you forget is the day you will need it most. I live in Asia - everything you buy gets taped and tied shut. And when you use the transportation to get home, you need the knife to cut all the strings to tie your packages down, and again when you get home and unload. I think I use my knife on average a few times every single day - without leaving the house. When we are out, it sees WAAAAAAYYYYYY more use.

But there is an added level of comfort knowing that you have something there in case some really crazy situation ever came up
