  • In this Part 4 of our CNC Basics series we venture into the wonderful world of 3D carving!
3D carving is considered the Holy Grail of CNC and this is where computer aided design really shines!
This is a simplified start to finish video showing you process of creating 2 separate tool paths, one for roughing and one for finishing.
We will be using the entry level Carveco Maker software to generate this job and use our CNC3D Nighthawk controller and QueenBee CNC to do the carving itself.
For those of you who want to explore Carveco we have a special deal to give you 5% off of your subscription for life.

      You're very welcome. :)
We might do a refresher soon with some more cool tricks involving 3D carving. :)

      Hello. :)
We purchased this STL and several others in a bundle from Etsy.

Hi thanks for the video. I purchased my first 3D file today from Etsy. 3 Roses, approximately 8” square, 1” deep. Ran it through Carveco maker. Roughing (1/4” up cut spiral bit) & finishing (1/32” v-bit) passes. Roughing took 3 hrs (I can live with that) finishing cut was listed at 15 “days”. I shut it down and will try to figure out what I did wrong in the settings. One that I’m share was wrong is my safe hight was 1.3”. Will drop it to .2. There was at least an hour of the machine re-cutting that witch the roughing pass already did. I’ll have to figure out how to fix that also. Any thoughts will be much appreciated.

Tuning your settings is an important part of making an efficient carving. Consider your material and the cutters you use for both roughing and finish passes. We have got a 1000x1000mm 3D carving finish file we use for bench testing our Commander software. The job uses a 0.25mm radius tapered ballnose and the time frame is 197 hours to complete!
High resolution 3D carves can take a long time but are well worth it. :)

@@cnc3d, thanks for your input. I’ve played with the tool path setting a bit. Roughing cut improved a bit. My question is about the finishing pass. Is there a way to bypass the wasted movement at the beginning of the finishing cut? The project I’m working on has very little material at th top of the work piece (after the roughing pass) and yet the cutting tool is going back and forth across the whole work area. Is there a way to tell the machine where the current highest point is…….While typing I’ve had a thought. I set up the carve using suggestions from this UA-cam video. In the video, in stead of setting up roughing and finishing at the same time, it had me set up the roughing cut and calculate it. Turn off the roughing tool-path (the little light bulb - it’s like turning off a layer in AutoCAD). And than set up the finishing tool path. The point of the video was showing how to set up an outlining vector (sorry, can’t recall the drawing tool name) and than an offset vector. Could this be why the finishing pass is replaying the roughing pass. It’s acting like the roughing pass did not occur. Thanks, I appreciate any help.
I have reduced the finishing cut time from 15 days to 13 days according to gSender.
Just re-watched the video and his finish cut went right down to where the roughing bit left off and started removing material.

Using Carvco you should create the roughing and finishing tool paths together. That way it will know where the roughing toolpath has already been and not redo everything that has already been done. Shouldn’t be two seperate tool paths. When you save the toolpath it will create two seperate paths, one for each cutting bit.

@@togdogs123 hi. Thanks for your response. I figured it out shortly after my post. I apologize for not remembering the exact tic box I un-checked that fixed the problem. I think it was in the tool settings. I’ll check when I get back on the computer. I do remember it was one of those “OMG you idiot” moments. obvious and simple.

      👋 😁
      Thanks for reaching out.
      Roughing/ clearing endmill used was a 4mm.

The finishing pass, a 0.5mm tapered ballnose was used:

I hope this helps and good luck on your 3D carving adventures! 🤩
