Sooch and Sarah, I would love it if you guys would do some reporting on current events. I trust pretty much no media but you guys have an excellent grasp on reality and I would love to hear your take on current world events or events in your locality or our nation.
Daniel Tiger was my fave on Mr. Roger's. I saw you said you wanted to hear what Sooch thinks about the current state of affairs and daily events... He is an extremely smart smart guy and i watch him often, and have for a couple years now. A couple years back, i found two new guys that present the news in a factual way, and then present their opinion. Their names are Pinball Preparedness ~he shows and builds a lot of prep stuff, and has many vids on these things, as well as current events and news that is barely being covered on mainstream... He is also an economist, and previously worked in secret capacity for the government. Another guy I really like is PrepperNow. He is a history teacher with several degrees and has excellent insight into how the future is related to the past and his summations are frequently spot on. Highly recommend. If ya wanna, check them
I'm surprised to hear someone else finally mention books. I've always collected books as a survival item, (Considering them critical for sanity, bartering, and plain old knowledge). Nice to hear someone else extolling the virtue of physical books of all types.
Thank you for such great information without the hype or panic. Just stumbled onto you right now! Really nice to hear your message, thank you so much! Aloha!
@kevinramsey The big surge in the power lines does come last. If you are home and awake, get to the main breaker coming into the house and trip it. This will prevent the extreme high voltage in the lines getting to what electrical stuff remains in the house and destroying them. Canadian Prepper had an EMP expert on and he described the pulses and effects.
@@terriegym that's what I been doing for yearsssssssssss, only use and then unplug it . It saves you money , if you have it unplugged. I tried this and I saved 1/2 of my electric bill. I would never unplug anything like appliances, in kitchen. We have a microwave ( small one ) and I would keep it turned off . Alot of people doesn't use their microwave , they store their Bread in it .
Made a cage from a large ammo can. Removed the rubber gasket and sanded off the paint on the cap and the box itself, after i made a "gasket" from aluminium foil. Lined the interiour with carboard so none of the electonics i have in there touch the metal. Put a phone in there and tried calling it and it did not receive anything. So i assume it works, also conected the box to a grounding wire using the Electical pannel ground wire which is burried on the side of the house foundation. Now working on building a bigger one.
That is the biggest mistake people make, removing the gasket. Take that box and out some water in it, turn it upside down. The water WILL leak out so the emp's CAN get in. Leave the rubber gasket. Line the box with cardboard. Sand off the edges of the box and attach foil tape to the edges and lay 3 or more sheets of foil across the entire top. Close the lid for a rigyht fit. I marked the foil and cut it to fit, taped the areas where it compressed to make it even more rip proof. It works perfect. I would be glad to send you a.pic of mine if you want. I just made two of.them.
@@ebony5766 Thanks for the info. Will try to make another one and do it your way to see. It was a pain in the a"" to fit the foil in the channle where the rubber gasket was, it does seal as it closes tigh. i was also gona look at buying some conductive sponge gasket.
A CME is long wave energy. It will go into power lines, railroad tracks and pipe lines. It will damage small things connected to them It will not damage cars, led flashlights, personal electronics. An EMP has long and short wave. Both can cause fires. With CME you will have many hours warning. With EMP you may have only minutes warning if any at all.
You can do whatever you can to salvage your equipment After an EMP.. but the fact remains it is not known if anything will survive...until after it hits... But don't let that stop you from trying
I was told things would come back but they tell you everything worthless because of no power. That's like power surges everyone buys that's strip think they are safe you are on a power surge but not a lightening strike it's two different things. Thanks for the updates.
Mention burying things. I image a deep root cellar would be a great place to store your electronics but will needed to be stored in waterproof containers to prevent corrosion
Regarding conductive gaskets: In the nuclear power business, we used crushable gaskets (similar to the crushable gasket on many spark plugs). Make your own from aluminum foil. Make a loose couple layer roll around a quarter inch to half inch dowel. Remove the dowel and lay the roll around the edge of your can push it around the rim loosely. When the lid is put on, you will have a full metal seal all the way around. It is not reusable as it may not seal perfectly after you open the container. But, for your backup items, it will work very well.
RE the pre-70's vehicle. The coil wire (internal to the coil) insulation may perforate. The capacitor (condenser) in the distributor cap may perforate also. Lastly, the plug wires may be ripped off and be damaged. Carry replacement coil, condenser and plug wires in a Faraday bag and replace them if needed. Note, all the above may be's. Electric fuel pumps may go also and meters. Probably can kiss your radio and any CB goodbye.
Very generally, smaller devices are safer from EMPs than larger ones because the strength is a V/m quantity. Hence the voltage drop over component is a function of its length. Also, "tin" foil, which is really aluminum, is not magnetic, so probably not a good choice. I also presume the orientation of a device to the EMP location (hence the electric field) will matter. If you can keep the longer portions of an electronic component transverse to the direction of the EMP wave, it will (in theory) be better because the voltage drop will be smaller. It's much like why it's better to stand with your feet close together and equidistant from a tree that is struck by lightning. I'm just an electrical engineer (PhD), not an EMP "expert", so take what I say here as things that generally make sense with the physics of the problem, but how much this accords with reality is up in the air.
Microwave ovens are NOT faraday cages. The door has a 1/4 wave shunt around the opening to stop 2.4 GHz from exiting. It is NOT sealed against all frequencies.
Physical maps are great, of course. No argument there. If you have an old, backup smartphone in a Faraday bag in your get home bag, this can hold maps, survival guides, medical/emergency handbooks, etc. If you use apps like Komoot or Strava for cycling, hiking, etc., paying for maps on these is not a bad idea. You can download the maps to your phone, and in case of an EMP these apps on this backup smartphone can actually plan your route home for you.
I just watched that last night. I saw it recommended in comments somewhere. Pretty scary in today's world. Shows a lot of things but really the importance of water.
US-Military tested this in 1962 with "Starfish Prime" over the Pacific. There was widespread damage to electric devices on Hawaii. So this is serious. I remember also the USAF testing their B-52 at an EMP generating site.

I keep an emergency crank AM/FM/SW radio with batteries out of the radio wrapped in tinfoil. I have wrapped the radio in several layers of tinfoil and keep the radio and batteries in an iron dutch oven with a lid on it, which I keep in a cold storage room. I believe this will suffice for a Faraday cage. I studied electrical engineering technology for a while in my work years. Am I wrong? Will this not work, considering that I don't live in the Continental U.S.?
I have found a Faraday bag in which I put my radio with spare batteries(separate), in it, sealed it up, and put it into an iron dutch oven in a storage room under the house. If that won't work than I don't know what will.( I don't have a smart phone, so I don't care about that).
I have a small solar system and a CB Radio run off a battery and spare CB and solar components in a faraday cage, agree with not pulling it out right away..
A surge suppressor WILL NOT help. It also doesnt matter if it's on or off. An emp will wipe out any equipment with micro chips in them unless you have it protected in a fariday cage.
Excellent video!! 🤷♂🤷♂Question: what about a Jackery/portable battery, unplugged, just 'out' (not in foil) - what do ya reckon will happen to it, please?
It depends on the source of the emp. If it solar, it should only affect long connections like power lines. If it is nuclear, it throws off three different pulses, one that can damage any electronics
I believe solar panels themselves could possibly survive an EMP. The diodes will probably be destroyed. But they are only there to keep your batteries from draining back into your panels. A temp fix for that would be to turn off the disconnect between your charge controller and the batteries when the sun isn't shining. Most likely your charger controller will be toast anyway so some bypassing is gong to be required.
So basically you need to buy one extra of everything that is electric in a faraday cage....nope. if this happens there are too many unknowns. That said I appreciate all the information you share. I know my limits and will need to accept what will be, will be. As my father said on his death bed, "It is what it is."
@@DylanJBartram everyone has their limit's. I have done everything I can, who are you to say I have a defeatist attitude? Just because you can afford everything does not keep you from death. It is up to the Evil doers and God who will survive.
Key word is faraday & mylar tho mylar is more bag for MRE & certain food you'd put in mylar bags with both desiccant silica gel & oxygen absorbers. Tin foil too I guess. Amazon will have loads of all of these 😎
You don't want to open your EMP safe bag until 3 days after the first wave. If the enemy military didn't shut down everything they needed and certain regions of USA they will keep sending EMPs until they shut off what's needed before they invade. Opening it within 24 hours is foolish. Live off of your food and paper supplies for few days before going back to technology when the entire focus of the enemies is to stop your technology. Opening it same day after basically defeats the entire purpose of protecting them from EMP.
how are the solar panels themselves vulnerable to EMP? I understand how the controller, MPPT, and inverter are since they're processor operated but I don't think that the solar panels have that, but I could be wrong.
Has anyone mentioned anything about what happens when the lights go out at the nuclear reactors, dams that require electricity to keep water levels safe, etc. Just stuff to think about.
I wondered about the dams myself made for flood control but most dams have out lived their lifespan no control could mean major dams failing and cause further catastrophe. Kind of scary nuke plant won't make it three weeks without fuel also scary
A lot of electronics are shielded per fcc guidelines already.. if they are not on and not plugged in most smaller electronics should be fine.. open one up.. all those little parts covered my pieces of metal is rf shielding.. lot of testing done on these and it takes a huge jolt to directly to them to effect then.. one close enough and strong enough that it literally launched them into the air..
A physicist who belonged to the original Ohio Homeland Security Committee buried a radio in the ground and experimented on what it took to stop the return signal (sent from the buried radio to the transmitting one not buried ) and found it took a MINIMUM of three (3) layers of (aluminum) foil and three (3) layers of bubble wrap to prevent the non-buried radio from linking up with the buried one...he warned us to make sure that each layer (both materials) overlapped as to not allow the EMP signal to get around any layer. With his academic contacts, the Navy was supposed to be scheduled to test his idea against a simulated EMP burst (never heard back, though).. Being also a former military Special Forces medic, he used to hold a disaster medical training class at Ohio State- Caldwell which I attended in 2010.
Fun thought experiment as the only ones who really know are the military. But enough data does exist to let you know you might be able to shield your devices. If you are right under an EMP, not good. Distance helps. EMP material is cheap when you consider the cost of what you are protecting. And no reason why you cannot use multiple layers of protection. I would only use aluminum foil as one of those multiple layers but have better shielding and ensure it is properly grounded. look for this guy - Dr. Arthur T Bradley.
QUESTION: Suddenly I'm seeing these "Rescue Radios" all over FB. They supposably work off cell towers and have unlimited range. Similar to the old Nextel. It's to my understanding and EMP would affect the cell towers. In that case these Rescue Radio's wouldn't work. Correct? *** Okay you covered this as the video continued. ****
Interesting. I don't see how aplastic could be any good at all. And an EMP doesn't necessarily hurt metal. It hurts electrical wiring. When the Carrington event occurred in the 1800s people did not notice or feel anything. It was only electrical conductive things like exposed telegraph wires that were affected.
I'm 65 and disabled. I've had back surgery and now major arthritis on top of it. My biggest fear is having to walk home. Good thing I don't have a car lol.
The idea of using magnetic galvanized trash cans. Yeah, you're putting your cell phone at risk with exposing it to magnetism from the trash can. Next... 16:48
Hi ya. We built our own Faraday cage. Inside is our backup solar charge controller, inverter, solar/crank radio, 2-way radios and chargers, digital cameras, multimeter, portable TV/DVD Player, a tablet and charger, CB base,, set of 6 walkie-talkies, and a few other items. Our cage is homemade, and consistes of 5 layers of aluminum foil separated by. 5 layers of 25" foam. Also have an old school distributor, with points and coil for my Chevy 350 motor, for my Tahoe. My Farmall tracor is good to go.. . .Solar panels themselves are not affected, but support gear is affected.
Hi to Christian B...sorry to disagree...yes aluminium foil is not magnetic...but how do you think they removed alu cans on scrap conveyors...without getting too techy, if you pass a moving magnetic field over aluminium, this actually induces a temporary field in the object and allows it to be ejected/separated from other rubbish. Try this...enclose a transistor radio in alu foil and hey presto...signal blocked. Conclusion? alu foil will indeed block an EMP pulse wave...especially if you earth it. P.S. Cut off plus & neg on a microwave plug, but leave the earth conductor plugged into the wall...this discharges HV EMP field to ground...OK?
It would take us from 2023 to 1905 in milliseconds. The main transformers some take up to 8 yrs to build. That's in a country that has electricity. We won't have electricity in a couple days afterwards. It will be yrs to be brought back to normal.
Oh lord every time I listen to one of you guys it scares me. I’ve got a defibrillator in my chest! If the EMP can cause fires will it cause the wires going into my heart catch fire and burn my heart inside out?
Would solar panels work after an EMP? Photovoltaic (PV) solar panels, battery banks, and all other components of an off-grid solar power system would not be affected by an EMP directly as they have no circuitry within. However, an EMP would likely damage the connecting wires through which the current flows.A
I can't see the .mil allowing satellite communications except for theirs. I imagine they'll shut down access to them. I think we have to assume that we'll be under military law at that time.
In the event of EMP or nuclear explosion is the water collected outside being exposed to the radiation safe for human consumption? If not Can it filtered or boiled to make it safe? Thank you.
An EMP does not disperse ionizing (the dangerous stuff) radiation...for that you need either a ground burst with lots of fallout, or an air burst -a few thousand feet above the ground. EMPs to get their maximum broad effect, need to be exploded high (as in 300 miles or so) above the earth.
Alternators/generators on most cars since the 40's have diodes and EMP sensitive parts.... Unless you've got a diesel with a compressed air starter you're screwed.

When do you take possium pills ? after emp strike? 1 minute , 5 minutes , etcc

Same here. I've been a prepper for years. It's a great hobby for me. There is always something to buy.
I love your videos. They are well thought out and calm and collected. Thanks for all you do.
I really like what you are saying. Mental and spiritual preparation are paramount for survival of not only yourself but others in need.
So true. We also need to suss-out likely problematic people now. "How to Deal with a Dumbass" is like a field guide to recognizing people you probably shouldn't have close/in a foxhole with you. Plus, it's really funny!

@kevinramsey The big surge in the power lines does come last. If you are home and awake, get to the main breaker coming into the house and trip it. This will prevent the extreme high voltage in the lines getting to what electrical stuff remains in the house and destroying them.

A CME is long wave energy.
It will go into power lines, railroad tracks and pipe lines. It will damage small things connected to them
It will not damage cars, led flashlights, personal electronics.
Fail.
Sootch, great video. There is some great videos where Peter Vincent Pry talks about EMPs.
As always thank you for your work you put in your videos
What about having a rubber mat cut up in your ammo box to cushion your electronics and protect them.

Aluminum window screens will protect against microwaves. Also, use a grounding clip on your mylar bags/blankets.

Am I wrong? I have a small solar system and a CB Radio run off a battery and spare CB and solar components in a faraday cage, agree with not pulling it out right away..
A surge suppressor WILL NOT help. It also doesnt matter if it's on or off. An emp will wipe out any equipment with micro chips in them unless you have it protected in a fariday cage.
I think that makes sense considering every wire and circuit board in your home or car is going to absorb the pulse

older cell phones the battery could be removed. new smart phones are either power on or standby powered.
Books are best to have to be safe.
Will small items like flashlights, radios, headlamps, solar lanterns be effect and need protected? How about a lifepo4 battery?
It depends on the source of the emp. If it solar, it should only affect long connections like power lines. If it is nuclear, it throws off three different pulses, one that can damage any electronics
I believe solar panels themselves could possibly survive an EMP. The diodes will probably be destroyed. But they are only there to keep your batteries from draining back into your panels. A temp fix for that would be to turn off the disconnect between your charge controller and the batteries when the sun isn't shining. Most likely your charger controller will be toast anyway so some bypassing is gong to be required.
You can run an extension lead direct to the solar panels also for direct electric. If your solar charger gets fried
You can run an extension lead direct to the solar panels also for direct electric. If your solar charger gets fried
So basically you need to buy one extra of everything that is electric in a faraday cage....nope. if this happens there are too many unknowns. That said I appreciate all the information you share. I know my limits and will need to accept what will be, will be. As my father said on his death bed, "It is what it is."
That is a defeatist attitude, no disrespect. Yes there are unknowns, but that doesn't mean do nothing.
@@DylanJBartram everyone has their limit's. I have done everything I can, who are you to say I have a defeatist attitude? If you have an emergency fund, food and water for emergent situations, precious metals, on and on goes the list of what ifs. At some point some of us will perish, even those with all the funds to purchase land, animals, precious metals, defense equipment etc... Just because you can afford everything does not keep you from death. It is up to the Evil doers and God who will survive.
What about a cabin with a metal roof that’s grounded with a copper rod ?
Great info. Thanks
Dr Arthur Bradley has great videos on emp preps

Has anyone mentioned anything about what happens when the lights go out at the nuclear reactors, dams that require electricity to keep water levels safe, etc. Just stuff to think about.
Once the power is out long enough and the reactors heat up to the point of melt down none of this advice matters.
I wondered about the dams myself made for flood control but most dams have out lived their lifespan no control could mean major dams failing and cause further catastrophe. Kind of scary nuke plant won't make it three weeks without fuel also scary
Emp= nuclear power station meltdown + oil refineries too!
Magnetic is not a requirement, only conductive. Copper, aluminum, graphite, woven carbon fiber will all work.

I recommend getting a folding razor scooter and keeping it in the trunk. They are light and cheap.
Red dot sights could get fried in a EMP event. Always have back up irons!👍
Keep the batteries out then shouldn't effect them. Reflex sight?

Ben at SuspisiousObservers says things would be safer inside a Plastic box. That an X Flare/CME could FRY everything metal.
Interesting. I don't see how aplastic could be any good at all. And an EMP doesn't necessarily hurt metal. It hurts electrical wiring. When the Carrington event occurred in the 1800s people did not notice or feel anything. It was only electrical conductive things like exposed telegraph wires that were affected.

a tablet and charger, CB base,, set of 6 walkie-talkies, and a few other items.
Our cage is homemade, and consistes of 5 layers of aluminum foil separated by. 5 layers of 25" foam.

. .Solar panels themselves are not affected, but support gear is affected.
What is considered “support gear”?
