      1, after a test drive I was very disappointed, the basic size and layout are great, the software and build quality is rubbish. also NCAP are considering downgrading this type of large screen no buttons.

      Thanks for your insight. 👍Anything specific regarding build quality? Is the choice of materials or panel gaps ?

    • @fredbloggs72
      @fredbloggs72 8 місяців тому +1

      The opening panels (doors etc) where poorly fitted, took two people to open the bonnet. Releasing it with duff software is terrible, on the one I drove, the heated steering wheel wouldn't turn off, best we could do was turn it down to no1, the glovebox wouldn't open, the speed limit indication gave spurious readings, voice control wouldn't work, and the car wouldn't power down unless you got out and locked the doors. The speedo is in a poor position, I'm very used to driving across Europe using a TomTom in corner of van windscreen, but looking across to the EX30 speedo was very distracting, a shame as this could be a good car.

    I hate that manufacturers are forgetting that cars vibrate when moving and we need buttons, for safety and accuracy, is not safe to go in and out of menus to adjust the temperature, is easier and faster to do that in a button. That minimalistic approach is cumbersome and can cause problems

      Voice controls and steering wheel buttons help

    • @chrisving91
      @chrisving91 8 місяців тому +3

      Reasonable point. They did however design functions such as temp change etc. to rely more on voice assistant. Once you get the hang of it, it’s like asking a front passenger adjust the heat for you.
      I’d advise any buyer of this car to properly assess all the buttons available and require the salesmen to show all ways to drive safely prior to purchase.
      That said, I like this car 👍

    All lithium ion batteries can be charged to 100%, but it accelerates degradation if it stays at 100%. Unlike NCA/NCM, LFP must be charged full frequently to avoid misreading SoC/range and associated problems such as cell imbalance. Most EV OEMs recommend 100% charging because they view it as a reasonable trade-off -- it potentially hurts range and durability, but comes at a lower cost.

    On Volvo Canada's website, they don't even confirm which models have LFP batteries. That would be like not telling you the volume and number of cylinders on your ICE car's motor. The car might be good but the marketers and salespeople still don't get it.

    I just wish it had more range 475km WLTP means around 350km highway range (120km/h). The new ID.3 GTX has 600km range. That’s roughly equivalent 450km highway range. That 100km difference makes quite a big difference for convenience.

    I'm glad you said it feels premium and has Volvo DNA because I get tired of people saying it is Chinese and doesn't feel like a Volvo (it's Chinese constructed, but designed in Sweden by teams at Volvo Sweden). Everything about this car in terms of its design is Volvo. Yes, the tablet thing is in Tesla but it is still something that makes sense in a Volvo. The Zeekr X is more luxo minded, and bigger, but this is more Volvo minded in its approach. The price as tested isn't the "bargain" the base model is. Nice review.

      It is not Volvo dna to make a car that is not as safe as before. To much horsepower in a small car like this. Suspention can't keep up with the power and putting everything into a screen is not Volvo dna. The chinese got to much to say in this so more just a Volvo badge on a car. Range is also not as the specs. Maybe because of the power eat up the range.

    One of the electric car review channels that gives me the most confidence. Congratulations and thank you for your work! 👏
    In my humble opinion, as a customer looking to buy an electric car, this EX30 is overvalued "only" because it has the Volvo badge.
    I would like you to compare it with the Smart #3, as they are in the same compact crossover SUV category, both based on the Geely Group's Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) platform and with approximate prices.
    Smart #3 has an interior that seems more careful/premium, more space in the back seats, better aerodynamics and you don't need to go to the most expensive option to have HUD, heat pump, 360º camera, etc... and it has OTA
    I don't particularly like the animation in the infotainment but nothing is perfect...
    I read that Smart is not sold in the US. Is that why it doesn't appear in most of the comparisons that are made?

    Got mine this week finally in the UK. Things to note. The control screen is fiddly of course with all normal things buried deep inside. That's still fine, if it would, if only it would freakin save the settings. Things like switching off the LKA, speed limiter/ACC function toggle selection, they reset to factory settings on car power down. This is a serious deal breaker for me because I prefer to use the speed limiter than ACC which is the default function. There is also a bug that limits charging speed to 1.3kw thereabouts and needs to be manually corrected. Again this resets to the limited speed after every drive and I need to remember to fiddle and correct it from the display before plugging in the charger. Hopefully this is a bug and will be fixed soon.
    But the blasts off this car provides, nothing short of pure madness..yee haw!! You see me this second, now you don't.

    Hej 👋🏽 Thanks for the review. As always, you delivered mate 😉
    I must admit that I have mixed feelings around the EX30. I love the exterior design and the electric hardware, but the interior doesn’t grow on me. The lack of instrument cluster, the very “cold” interior trim, I don’t know, I would have expected something different. But I’m not the only customer on earth, so, that’s my very personal point of view 😊

      The interior is really Spartan compared to the other cars in the lineup. Mostly to cut costs I guess but also to appeal to a younger audience.

    • @SeeliLeck3r
      @SeeliLeck3r 9 місяців тому +1

      I think you’re right. But I can’t help it, this trim, especially with the recycled doted plastic, it gives me bathroom feels 😅 and there are other quirks that don’t go with me : the sound only coming from the sound bar, as I’m a sound savvy, I really need a nice tailored sound system (but again, that’s very personal), and being tall as you are (1m95), I will have the same issue. Also, the one pedal drive is a must have for me, cannot drive a VE without it. I’m very used to the one on my EC40 (AWD btw), I couldn’t go without.
      So yeah, all in all, I think this car is not for me. But it’s the reason why there is plenty of different offers on the market 😉

    What's the range like? I've seen a number of UA-cam reviews that say the range and consumption is very poor, the average Kw is very high in daily use.
    Yesterday I took the EX30 for a test drive, it felt very cheap and plastic for a Volvo, it also felt very unstable on the motorway, checking the Kw consumption on the screen it was always very high, rear seat space was absolutely terrible and of no use for anyone other than a small child, rear boot space was also tiny.
    Straight after riding the EX30 I took the EX40 for a drive, the 40 felt immediately a different build quality, more what you expect from Volvo, as for space it was perfect in the rear and boot, the main problem was the 40 felt like it was 10 years older than the current modern equivalent EV's on the market and seriously in need of an update.
    A last thing I almost forgot was the buttons on the steering wheel on the EX30 were terrible in use, I had previously heard about this and it was true, I believe they have updated this for the 2025 model.
    The experience in it and driving it I described to my wife made me think like driving in a shopping trolly.

    Great and fair review as always. Wonderful job. The car had so much "hype" from all the mainstream media, glad to see your review is nuanced and talks about how this car isn't really cheap when you start looking at options (which you will most likely want).
    About the car itself, personally I see next to no positives. It is very small but other than that there's not much to it. MG4 is cheaper and has higher range. In my region even a new base Tesla model 3 is cheaper. And when you start adding options, the price of the EX30 just explodes (EX30 "core" with a bigger battery costs the same as a long range model 3, which would still have much longer range and a glass roof to say the least). And if you add more options, the price creeps up into the 50k€+ range. At this price point, unless you desperately want a small car specifically, why not look at another car from Geely, built on the same platform, the Zeekr 001?
    Overall, great review, but the car itself seems like a hard sell and niche at best. I don't see the mass market appeal that I've hear so much about.

      The EX40/EC40 both seem to do well, and this with a lower entry price may be a hit. I think the attraction, for the market, lies in the brand and many will settle for that. Volvo is a brand with heritage and with a lot of loyal customers that don't want to buy newer brands like tesla.
      It doesn't always make sense for us techies 🙌

      I have a problem with "buy a car on the same platform" from Geely. In 2006 my ex-wife bought a Volvo S40. It was built on the Ford Focus platform. I tried a Mazda 3 and Focus built on the same platform. It felt nothing like the Volvo. The Volvo's ride, body structure, steering feel, brakes, and the engine were quite different than the others on the shared platform. I realize that the EVs motors aren't distinguished like engines but what I say applies to the ride, steering, brakes, and other feel that's in a Volvo vs. another brand. So, to me, just because the Zeekr or Smart share a platform with Volvo doesn't make them Volvo. They don't share panels or interior parts so I see them as different cars. There are times, like the Volvo EM90 vs. Zeekr009 where they are essentially the same car but the EX30 is not that case. And still, the EM90 may drive differently than the Zeekr009.
      The Zeekr001 is a big car. The Zeekr X is the one you may have in mind but that's bigger than the Volvo EX30 and it has a way different feel in terms of interior. Some prefer it as it is more obviously premium. But I like the cool Scandi style of the Volvo.
      I think with the EX30 people will find the sweet spot on price and it'll sell well. But it is a small car so it will be fore people wanting a small car.

    • @ItsOnlyElectric
      @ItsOnlyElectric  8 місяців тому +1

      Spot on!
      Sharing platforms is a common way of cutting costs when building cars today. Most people don't care and don't even know it, think that goes for 90% of the consumers..
      With that said and as you state, it will probably sell really well..

      @@benjaminsmith2287 Agree with a lot of it. My point was just that this car is not cheap or a good deal at all on price alone.
      Even at the base price it's not a good value option in comparison to others in the market and with options, the price creeps up way too close to a car that's far larger, more luxurious, has all of the same features and more as standard.
      The driving dynamics will naturally be different of those cars, that's why you need test drives and great reviews!
      So like I said, unless someone is specifically looking for a very small car it's a hard sell. Since it only has its brand name to offer.
      Sadly I don't see it as a big hit with customers since cars like the Tesla model 3 and mg4, even the new BYD seal are just better value for the money. Even if they are bigger cars from a different segment. For a similar sized car, there's the BYD dolphin.
      I suppose we will have to see how much customers value a badge of a brand rather than the specifications of the car.

However I look forward to the soft OPD in Volvo, when I get it in a month. I may combine driving with foresight with the benefits of OPD. Another approach I use a lot is driving with adaptive pilot. Because make no mistake this is a SMALL car. In our case we looked into different electric cars that weren't too wide because of space limitations we have. Hard to judge this car. With the big battery it would work as a first/only car for me that have one kid in the back seat and need to tow the occasional trailer. But the again, a Model Y RWD gives plenty of room, better charging, bigger screen (it really looks too small!), and proper one-pedal driving. A downside for the MY is more cumbersome in city traffic and tight places.
    As a second car with the small battery you have to put it up against simpler cars like Citroen e-C3, and then I am not sure it justifies the higher price.

Although space was critical, the EX30 forecabin is pretty good, lots of leg space. However, I think the XC40 display behind the seating wheel is excellent, and the missus isn't convinced by single central screen futurism.

    Thank you for the comprehensive review. Please consider one change to you assessment process. When assessing interior room, your personal assessments will always be flawed given you sit well beyond the height/size for an average male globally. I am extremely confident to say the EX30 was NEVER designed to accommodate a person of your height sitting behind yourself as a driver. Context is critical as I am sure you would not expect to be accommodated in the back seat of a Porsche 911. So when you describe the rear of the EX30 as tight, it is misleading as a male/female of average height would describe the rear space as okay /sufficient. A secondary observation: With you being a tall and muscular male, you may often get caught buying shirts too small for your frame. If you watch the driving sequences of your video, your shirt is pulling tightly to indicate you need to go up one size or more in your shirts.

      Thank you for watching, I'm glad you found it informative. The reason for testing it this way is to be able to compare it with all the only cars I have tested to use it as a reference. I'm also staring that I'm not a good göfor for someone to put in that back seat.

    Good design but with MAJOR compromises. Its entry price is only relatively competitive but you get nothing with the car. You have to go with the bigger package and that's priced higher than a Model 3/Y and marginally cheaper than the ID.4 RWD with the highest trim.
    It doesn't ride/drive as a Volvo and has some abysmal safety compromises that goes against Volvo's philosophy...

      To be a bit more specific what are the safety compromises we are referring to?

      @@ItsOnlyElectric keeping your eyes off the road to do the simplest of things: like watching your speed, control the climate settings etc. Everything is controlled via the screen and when you look at the screen while driving the car beeps at you for not keeping your eyes on the road. That's just silly and not very thought-out - atypical of a Volvo.
      The other thing is the body-roll of the car in corners. The RWD is simply too powerful for its own good, causing the rear to slip in tight corners. Again, not very Volvo-ish.
      Before you say that Model 3 and Model Y also have packed everything in the center screen, remember that their screen is bigger and installed horizontally. It's still a problem IMO, but not as severe as the EX30.

    • @ItsOnlyElectric
      @ItsOnlyElectric  8 місяців тому

      @Emaratilfy Not that much body roll compared to other cars. The suspension is rather stiff compared to others.
      Agree regarding the screen, I want a bigger screen and horizontally aligned.

    What is it with European testers? Has the U.S. form of bastardised English insidiously crept in to European English? You pronounce kilo-watt, kilo-gram,kilo- joule correctly: why not the correct kilo-metre? It is the same construct of words. Kilo= a thousand, metre is the distance. Please, please correct this anomaly!
