  • The Volvo EX30 is a compact crossover SUV with good range, loads of power, great tech and reasonable levels of space. It has a 64kWh usable battery for a WLTP range of around 470km, but we thing a figure of 350-380km is more realistic in the real world.
    The EX30 is very good value for money as it maintains much of the quality demanded by the Volvo badge but at a relatively affordable price tag.
    We tried it out over a week, testing it out in different scenarios such as motorway trips, the school run, and pottering about town. We wanted to know about range, power, tech, space in the boot, and see if the EX30 lived up to the hype!

    This car looks phenomenal and I was convinced this was going to be my new EV. Test drove it and now I’m undecided: no arm rest or cup holders in the back for the kids. We live in South Africa - and there’s no shade for the panoramic sunroof… (before you ask, yes we have loadshedding / power cuts, but I’m using our solar panels at home to charge my current EV).

      True, there's a few tweaks it would be nice to make. But then what car is perfect! Great to hear you're managing to charge the car from solar PV...well done! And thanks for the comment!

      From SA too! What size solar setup do you have and would you be able to select how much power gets pulled by the car to whatever source it’s connected to?

    Great Review Blake, well done, I really like the look of the car inside and out, its a really clean design. probably a bit pricy for the size especially with the smaller battery.

      Thanks John, really appreciate the positive feedback! Personally don't agree on the price being high for the size. There is real quality to the EX30, and it's not targeted at people who need loads of space. For example, the cheapest Toyota C-HR starts above €40k and goes past €52k for the highest spec. Thanks again for the comment, great to get the interaction with people!

    In Ireland the heat pump is included with the bigger battery models, it’s not on the entry model, as far as I know.

    Great review and I see many, many...
    One question...Dont you think there will be a good addition, that the custom button, instead of having only just one function it will prompt a window on the screen with few 3 or 4 shortcuts to your choice, and with the steering wheel arrows (up and down)or just pressing one, two or three times you choose the choice selected. I think that only one customizable function is not enough. Just a thought out loud to Mr Google

    I'm pretty sure if it's like other Volvos, that controlling the distance to the vehicle in front when in adaptive cruise control can be done from the steering wheel. Also if you are travelling below the selected cruise control speed, if you indicate to pass a vehicle, the speed will increase up to the selected level.
    Nice review but would have been nice to see the screen when you were explaining it?

    • @evplatform
      @evplatform  6 місяців тому

      I don't think so. Buttons on steering wheel were to alter speed up and down. Another button to alter Pilot setting.

      Good phrasing. Marketers have convinced many buyers that bigger boot equals better boot. I would say depends on your house hold requirements. For my Wife and I half the time our boot is empty. Other half our dog is in the boot. We did 45 test drive, dog fit. He could stand up, lie down, and turn around comfortably. EV6 has many more litres but slope of the roof made our dog sit in hunched position. No good for us, but EV6 is awesome and will work well for loads of people. I think for households like us EX30 will be Awesome. Thanks Blake. One thing your Mac DC quote doesn't match what I am seeing on Volvo UK website. Is it different in Ireland?

    • @evplatform

      Oh....I don't envy you making that tough choice! Personally I'd be Model 3 or possibly MG4 as I have a young family and space is needed. Budget wise, the MG4 really hits the mark. Volvo has a great feel though. Test drives galore for you to help choose! Thanks for the comment and feedback!

    It has a low price tag only if you choose the absolute base model. If you start adding stuff, you end up with a rather expensive small car.

    • @evplatform
      @evplatform  6 місяців тому +1

      Where I'm based, you simply choose between Ultra and Plus specs...not much choice to add individual features. This test model I had still comes in a few thousand Euro cheaper than the top spec Toyota C-HR for example. Thanks for the comment Erik! Hope you enjoyed the video.

    Are the various drive settings specific for individual drivers. Can each user of the car set their own drive settings?

    • @evplatform
      @evplatform  6 місяців тому

      I'm not sure you can tailor it to that extent, but I didn't have the car set up in full as it was only on loan for a week. Some of the settings I preferred defaulted each time I got in the car. Thanks for the comment!

    • @andrewallen-tidy3818
      @andrewallen-tidy3818 6 місяців тому +1

      Yes. The car comes with separate key cards for two drivers. There is an update coming which will put this in the app. It sets itself by whoever opens the car. If you swap drivers half way through the journey, you can change the driver on the screen. It also has a guest driver setting.

    Blake, your reviews are excellent, concise and easy to watch. Unfortunately the sheepish following Tesla's touch screen mania is disappointing and unsafe. Euro NCAP to revise safety ratings from 2026 onwards of cars that depend on touch screen HUI. Like the look of the car, but the lack of binnacle and the slavish big iPad to control things is a deal breaker for somebody like me. It kind of smacks of Electric cars are Tesla's, we are also an electric car so interior is like a Tesla with the blank drivers cockpit. EV transition era has exited the early adopters phase now in the majority adopters phrase (where did I head that before? :) ) who are more conservative buyers expecting electric versions of cars they are already familiar with driving. Consumers do not want to have to 'get used to it'. Once Euro NCAP start downgrading touch HUI dependant cars this temporary fad may soon vanish.

      Have you actually driven a Tesla or another EV with a central screen? Many who are critical of the setup quickly adjust and find it no more distracting than looking down with a traditional driver display. Many features and settings can be adjusted with voice control, which is less distracting than using a knob or button.

    • @oceanfroggie
