100% when this music plays in Hillcrest you can hear Jessie fighting the wlf and ellie thinking that it's Tommy really adds to the urgency and tension. First part and second part are true masterpieces...

You got real rollercoaster of true human feelings in one place
First part you have a Joel who keeps on surviving regardless of his loss and trauma that he never recovered from, living in the world that became a true hell, smuggling an orphan girl that is immune to a deadly fungus,
Joel treats her as like a "thing" and over time creating a bond with her, more like a human, then like a friend and to the point that it becomes father and doughter bond - at the end he knows that to create the vaccine she will have to die. So he goes full beast mode killing everyone - he doesn't just kill everyone but he becomes a villan as he unables world to recover, preventing creating the vaccine - his actions will cost millions of lives - the game ends as he lies to Ellie about what really happened
You dont have that good vs evil BS - you just got humans and their actions
For a man who felt guilt not being able to protect his child from dying - he formed the bond with Ellie as he would form the same bond to his daughter- for him - her life is more important than the world
It's 20 years after the outbreak so the world no longer exists - there is no religions, nations and bullshit thats why game also shows that in this environment womens would have to do the same things as mens to survive
In the second part Joel has been tracked down and killed by a another person that deals with trauma Abby - Joel took from Abby her protector, her best friend he killed her father who was the head scientist trying to perform operation on Ellie.
You also get to play Ellie as shes older, she knew what Joel did and her relation with Joel became love and hate relation, as she didnt have anything and didnt want that life really, in both parts you can see how shes exciting about human life before the outbreak... But there is also love as she understands Joel more than anyone would understand him. She knows that for him her life became more important than anyone in this world.
You might call his actions selfish - but that's another point in the game - we are all selfish
That's why this game is true masterpiece - beautiful views as the planet becomes more green after 20 years of humans non existing, you have beautiful soundtrack, you have extreme brutality in the game - as it would be if there was an outbreak like that, you have exploring, listening to converations between characters, this game would make you laugh and cry, it will make you feel tense and calm, there is no good or evil so you can experience human behaviours and actions, in second part when you hunt down the enemies they use names between them as to show you "the circle of pain", everything is very realistic - upgrading weapons and weather conditions, loads of psychology being used, from PTSD and trauma to healing and forgiveness, for example when you play Abby you can feel how she's changing from a girl that her main drive to life was to have her revenge, to a woman that starts to protect her enemies... You can experience that when she's dreaming - on the beginning even after killing Joel she still have dreams about going to surgery room and finding her dad being dead - till she starts to protect people who normally would be her enemies and her nightmares stops
The game actually shows you how to heal from trauma and PTSD !
How acts of forgiveness can change the person.
Ellie experience that at the end - as she stops seying Joel being tortured and she pardons Abby letting her go. She experience the same thing that Abby experienced, she sees Joel looking at her and playing guitar ...
