    In an industry where trusting your ears is essential. It is a tough lesson to learn how your audio systems can betray you. Haven't even finished the video yet but this is a fantastic video. I have my first single ever to be released and I listen to it off my headphones for the first time and was absolutely blown away how terrible it sounded. I been getting feedback from people on what to fix (in the mix) but now that I have a better idea what they were hearing on their systems I am frankly embarrassed. Investing in monitors before I release my first single for sure now. Just learning that headphones are not usually flat and the possibility how unbalanced the headphone speakers from left to right can be makes a lot of sense now. Thank you.

      Try asking what would happen after you mix some music on flat equalized headphones and you want then to listen to said music on non flat headphones (which 99% of the users out there will never do and don't care about)
      I'll tell you what, it will sound bad. it will even sound bad on speakers.

      @@borisjacobs2862 nope I just did my first track.with this method and it actually works. With a flat equalizer it makes the sound more reliable. Because every headphone boosts certain frequencies whether it be low or high end. For example my headphone boosts highs but beats boost the low it's best the mic in between so a neutral frequency is the best to mic in. And let me tell you it works amazing. Once I turned sonar works off it sounded like a professional track even better then when I had sonar works on.

      @@borisjacobs2862 Yup. What Boris is trying to say is that it practically doesn't matter whether you mix on flat or non-flat equipment because THERE IS NO FLAT (reasons of physical nature, obviously if you could hear flat audio spectrum, you wouldn't hear anything at all. You would have no hearing. And that's because of phase cancellation which comes from phase distortion). Every single headphone company wants ONLY your money... How the saying goes - "Everybody earns on your lack of knowledge". Lawfully, the only thing you're prohibited from in marketing, is that you can't lie in advertisement. And Sonarworks do not lie - Their software does exactly what it says, it flattens out the sound spectrum as good as it can. It applies a counter eq, that's all. You want a linear phase? Well, then you better be prepared for latency and... uhm... ehh... be prepared for a... a... yeah! pre-ringing! (and that's in case you have heard phase cancellation). It's good if a headphone had a balanced sound which is SUBJECTIVE.
      And yeah, you can mix in headphones, and second, yeah - you can do incredible mixes that do translate well and are highly UNCOLORED.
      WAVES - is the thing!!. And if you hear flat, then send me greetings from the SPACE or GRAVE.
      All the capitals are KEYWORDS.

    you forgot something in that list as to why people use headphones instead of monitors..
    One huge point missed is, people live in apartment complexes where the walls are thin as well as there might be an old couple or people next door,
    or people medically ill next door or one major factor which is, landlord does not allow loud music playing in the apartment, because neighbors consider it "noise pollution"
    Yes I know I know, its your apartment and you pay rent for it blah blah blah.....
    The fact of the matter is many people are not allowed to play loud music, and the walls are so paper thin between apartments that people will hear everything.
    In my apartment i can hear the couple next door to me have sex almost every day as their bedroom is on the other side of the wall.... yup moaning and groaning blah blah blah.
    Its like being right inside their own bedroom and watching, thats how paper thin apartment walls are these days.
    You can try to cover it up and buy these bullshit acoustic foams that give people the false impressions that they are soundproofing their walls when in fact they are not.
    If no one here has actually taken down the "actual" walls sheetrock off all the walls , ceiling and floors to visually see the 2x4's within the walls and install soundproofing material like Roxul,
    Then you are really not sound proofing.
    All you are doing is purchasing FOAM from a company and giving them your money for false impressions that you are soundproofing.
    Look...... people go to work, bust their asses at a job they most likely hate but it pays the bills and the last thing they need is to come home to people BOOM BOOM BOOM music,
    driving people up the walls, because people just want to get home, kick their feet up and watch a movie and many just want to spend quiet time with their wife and kids.
    IM A MUSICIAN, so I understand what this is about because ive been through it. YES headphone sucks when wearing it for every damn thing including doing music,
    just because you have to keep your noise to yourself..........
    So the best thing to do is find an apartment or location to live where sound and music will not be a problem for anyone around you within 50~100 feet or more.
    Many people who have apartments are NOT allowed to modify the apartment for ANY reason. Though some people are lucky and might have great landlords who dont care.
    but most of the time 99.9% of the people living in apartments are not allowed to make noise as well as modify their walls to soundproof as they are not allowed to modify the apartment.
    Specially if you RENT and do not lease or finance the dwelling. - most musicians have a VERY hard time finding the ideal location for them. hence the reason why musicians use headphones.

    Drew did you notice a difference in the sub level in your cans after the Sonarworks? I mean those frequencies roll off because the drivers can't produce it properly like you mentioned... Does boosting it in the software actually yield the desired result?
    P.S I have sonarworks for my room treatment. I have mixed feelings about it but generally positive.

    • @nicebluejay

      i have custom calibrated hd600's from sonarworks that i bought from them directly. i have mixed feelings about this technology to be honest. when i am mixing with the plugin engaged i find the subs are boosted way too much such that my final mixes sound like they've had thier nuts clipped, lol, and the highs end up being to bright, plus the boosted subs do sound strange. i find the hd600's to be pretty flat on their own, so i am on the fence with this stuff. i have experimented with rolling off the bass in the plugin which has yielded better results, wish they had a hpf rather than just a shelf, and have also tried mixing with the plugin at half wet/dry, this probably works best. i guess for me the jury is still out, but as of this moment, i am mixing without it. who knows about tomorrow =)

    • @Gorflaxsack
      @Gorflaxsack 8 років тому +2

      I have a sub pac, and I find that great for getting a feel on the low end. Combining that with spectrum analysis I can get it pretty in the pocket... You don't hear the subs, you have to feel them. Just interesting that they would boost it so hard.

    Wow, thanks for such a deep review!
    Still, a question left behind - if you could spend a hundred on headphones, software, and calibration (about 300-350$ total) and get a full flat curve, why would you even consider buying a much expensive pair of headphones?
    Apart from Ohms, design benefits and loudness, there seems to be no reason to buy a premium-class pair.
    Thx for the vid, and thx for the answer :)

      Good question. IMO there are limits to the correction's effectiveness. I much prefer to get headphones that are 90% there, and let the correction do the final 10%. If you get headphones that are really out, then the correction is super heavy handed and I'm not a fan of the results of that personally. It's the same principle in using DSP to correct for a room. Little corrections are okay. Big ones, watch out!

    Hi Dj Vespers, I ordered a calibrated DT880 as well, which is already coming my way. Got a bit nervous after watching your video, haha. Is there a maximum of dB difference between left and right that you would recommend, to otherwise send them back? I'm still kind of in a beginners stage of mixing, so I'm afraid I'd miss out on any issues just by hearing.

    • @A23049
      @A23049 6 років тому

      Thanks for your quick reaction. I just received them yesterday. I saw a maximum difference of 1.5 dB, so I considered myself a happy man. But you're right, their design is awful and quite rare. After doing some research on the web, it striked me how little people know of this mismatching issue and production inconsistency. They're still one of the most, if not the most, popular headphones for mixing! On the other hand, I must say I fell in love with the pads and Sonarworks seems to do a good job correcting the mismatch.

    I have just bought the studio edition with microphone. Just one question, when using the plugin, my mix should sound as flat as possible in order for it to translate good on other systems?
    And why is there a volume difference (on / off) when listening to music on my computer?

    • @warpacademy
      @warpacademy  6 років тому +1

      Hey mate. Hope you're enjoying the studio kit. When you're using the plugin, it's simply correcting for errors in the freq response of your room and monitoring setup. This will enable you to hear more accurately what you need to do in your mix. The reason why there's a volume dip is because the correction EQ causes boosts to counteract phase cancellation nulls. This requires volume to be pulled back to prevent clipping. You can adjust this if you want, but it's better to just turn up your mains out on your audio interface amp. Cheers!

      As far as the correction, I probably don't have the best ears, but I can tell it flattens it out. I like the sound of them without correction for just listening, as it brings the bass up a touch, but I think it will give me a better starting point for mixing with the correction applied. I totally ruined a mix using a pair of ATH-M50x. Made the sibilance unbearable.

    There’s only an issue with that: you don’t hear the same with both ears. So the calibration is useless... For instance in my case, I ear high frequencies better with right ear.

    • @QuintusKing
      @QuintusKing 2 роки тому

      I guess that's the ultimate bottleneck that no current technology can fix it reasonably (that, and the fact that all listeners have the same issue and they listen in different environments on different devices!). There will always be uncontrollable factors and we have narrowed down so much already with Sonarworks' calibration and even that may be considered unnecessary by a lot of producers because at one point some errors become unnoticeable to the average listener. Any effort further than that to correct for any remaining variations to me will be not worth it.

      Yeah, the "flatness" has become kind of a "buzzword" because somehow it feels "intuitively right".
      Still, I'd say, we should use flat response audio system to clean away any noises or undesired frequencies (but we could do the same also just by analyzing spectrograms of a mix). But - a big "but" - it will work only if account for all possible sound alterations in its path from the membrane in the headphone to our brain. It doesn't matter much if the sound looks "flat" when we capture it on a microphone with Sonarworks unless it is a highly specialized microphone capable of accurately reproducing our in-ear mechanics. And what if our ears differ, too, from person to person? Should we calibrate Sonarworks for our eardrum inaccuracies and differences? Putting a microphone in my head behind my eardrum and measuring the frequency range there? Mission impossible. And what about the psychoacoustics and brain? Surely, Sonarworks don't compensate for that?
      We have the same issue also with our eyes - they have non-linear brightness sensitivity, therefore display hardware (monitors, LEDs etc.) has to be adjusted to produce something that seems "linear" to our brain but actually is not linear:
      www.eldoled.com/cms_file.php?fromDB=9157 (scroll to "Light and the human eye")
      Of course, depending on the target audience, at the end we still have to use some "average audio reproduction devices" (for most mainstream music it will be all about headphones with cellphones, bluetooth speakers, cheap Hi-Fi systems) to tweak the sound to feel good for an "average listener". It will mean sacrificing flatness and adding some intentional accents here and there, but hey, we want the music to feel good, not just look good in spectrograms!
      Sonarworks got a big dosage of hype when it received relatively big (for a small startup company) investment. By the way, I happened to work on their audio engine programming at the very beginning when it was just a prototype...

      camelCased there are some headphones that do exactly what you mention. It Measures the response of your own ears and calibrates the headphones to that. But in a test i,read they claim that they are extremely uncomfortable to wear.

    If you got a really good monitor headphones such as Sennheiser HD800S, Audeze LCD4 and 64audio tia18, there is no need to use that kind of software to correct anything. The best way to get a good mix with good reference headphones is to listen those good mixed reference song by the same headphones that you used to mix.

      Agreed. The difference was horrific. This was definitely the worst I've seen, but it's a design flaw. Headphones with a cord that enters just one driver, then travels through the headband to the other, is cheaper, but produces imbalances between left and right.

    Cross feed simulation? Turn down the width 50%?

    • @AceDeclan
      @AceDeclan 7 років тому

      Actually turning down the width reduces the SIDE part not the mid. & its impossible to play part of the right signal into the left and vice versa because they would phase and cancel each other out. All the speaker simulating plugins do is turn down the side level. Are you sure you really know whats going on under the hood dude?

    • @AceDeclan
      @AceDeclan 7 років тому

      Haha you realise all those ‘specialised plug-ins’ are doing is making that signal more mono? There is no cross feed, all they are doing is reducing the width with some reverb & delay on the entire thing. What makes it sound like a room is the HRTF function which just adds delays to the left & right. There is no such thing as digital cross feed because it would just cancel each other out as they phase. I can see you trying to explain what you think is going on but your knowledge on this particular scenario is limited.

    • @AceDeclan
      @AceDeclan 7 років тому

      Crossfeed simulation is literally just turning down the side channel on the low end and slowly bringing it back up as it gets to the higher frequencies. There is some delay yes.
      Read this diyaudioheaven.wordpress.com/tutorials/crossfeed/
      “Crossfeed basically is a frequency dependent ‘mixer’. Low frequencies are mixed to mono. The higher the frequency is the more ‘stereo’ it becomes. The highest frequencies will never be ‘fully stereo’ though, just less ‘mono’.”

    I have an important question. I mixed my song using Reference 3 and it's flat response calibration and it sounds good to me, and even on the other device simulations, but when I turn the Reference 3 plugin off and hear it through the non flat headphones, it sounds not as good, some instruments aren't as clear than the others and just overall very different and not good. If I wanted to export my song and post it online for say, I'm really confused whether I'm supposed to render it with Reference 3 on or off. People say that you turn it off only when rendering but if I do that, I would just be rendering the "Not-so-good" version as compared to when hearing it with the flat response. I tried making some fixes when it was turned off but when I turned it on, it would sound uneven. So my question basically is, do I mix with headphones without Reference 3 and just reference to other tracks and how they sound or use the plugin and mix till it sounds good and not care how it sounds to me without the plugin?

    • @Andy-ft5dt
      @Andy-ft5dt 7 років тому

      I'm using the average audio technica ath m20x calibration. I know it's not as reliable but I don't think I'll be able to purchase new calibrated headphones or send mine for individual calibration. I'm also just using the 21 day trial. So if I made mixed a song completely on my headphones WITH it's coloring of the sound and NOT flat response, and compared it to a professional released track on my headphones and let's say it sounds pretty good, would I be fine with just releasing that track and not using a flat response mainly because it sounds as good as a professsionally released track? I'm sorry if these questions seem really stupid, but really, thank you for your time for responding to me, I really appreciate it.

    • @Andy-ft5dt

    This makes no sense. You will get a generic result. I mean there are dozens of Headphone amplifiers with different Frequency responses. So Ref will Objectively seen , sound different on each of them. How can you just slam a plugin on it and expect it to work as a "Reference"? The only way i see this work would be a physical device like a DAC box-Portable Headphone amp with Reference 4 inside and Pre calibrated where i can insert my Headphones->choose headphone Model -> be done with it

    • @warpacademy
      @warpacademy  6 років тому +1

      It's an interesting thought about the frequency response of amps and interfaces. I've personally measured and seen the response charts for a bunch of audio interfaces and headphone amps (measured with REW). What I can tell you is that pro-spec audio interfaces and headphone amps are very nearly flat in their response. I personally use Apogee products and they're perhaps 1 dB off at the most. Headphones are MUCH less flat and in need of correction. The amps themselves are in such a tight range - for the products I've tested - that it's virtually negligible. I can't speak for non-pro-audio headphone amps, that are not designed as reference class for mixing. That's not my bag. But pro-audio stuff is very much on the level.

    • @saardean4481
      @saardean4481 6 років тому

      @@warpacademy Yes. But i a talking more about output Impedance of the Amps. Not linearity. How they interact with the Impedance of the connected Headphone. And this influence can vary a lot in some cases

    WTF to use liner monitors or headphones ? People listen to a music with non linear ones .. are we producing music for ourselves or for people ? If so , the best solution would be to pick the most 'average sounding' popular headphones/monitors - and thanks to it, during music production we could hear what actually people would hear.. it makes sense I think ? What would be an advantage when we can hear some specific sounds precisely and well balanced in our studio if listeners with popular headphones can not hear those sounds properly or even couldn't hear some of them at all.. ?

      Hi DJ V , I meant popular speakers but not "just like speakers". All the popular sound system, I have ever heard are more or less like V EQ-ed. Many of those have a really deep low end and quite high upper range. Yea, it is exceptionally difficult to satisfy everybody and I think that studio linearity actually doesn't help a lot. Here is an example, one of my short compositions / demos produced with linear speakers and believe me.. I was running to a car 22 times there and back to get good sound and it was impossible to get it sounding good on iMac / car/ studio monitor / headphones ( a few types) and , oh man.. especially the bass is the most hard to control. If there is a subwoofer in a car .. forget about good sound..
      ua-cam.com/video/pCDLTs1X2ww/v-deo.html
      Looks like it's just a matter of balancing .. to sound not bad every where instead of sound really good with one particular system.. tough life :)

      @Paye ta Disquette You may use very flat response studio headphones but listeners are using pop HP so .. different results.. And that's why I decided to choose in a middle ..almost studio flat response but still pop set which is the best solution because during music production you can hear almost the same as your listeners can .. my choice here is Sennheiser HD 599 model and I'm very satisfied with it; however it needs some time.. a few days.. weeks to warm up and reach that sound BTW those are very comfortable to wear. Forget Beats etc, just try to follow my advice and I hope you will be more than happy with it :)... @andy voice is my 2-nd account here
