Welcome to SoDak boys! I'd recommend next time going to Tabor Rec area. It is kind of difficult to find but well worth it. It"s a minimum maintained campsite right on the Lewis and Clark reservoir. Hit me up if you have any questions!
The Tacoma really is the perfect truck for this. Do it again, hopefully y’all catch more fish. The sleeping set up looked almost perfect, especially if the rear was cleared out and the seat reclined all the way down. Only big things missing are: a huge dedicated water dispenser jug and big rechargeable battery for charging. You were 100% on the dot, if you didn’t run your engine, the dead car battery could have left your truck stranded.
If you wanted to y’all could probably buy a medium sized detachable solar panel to mount on the roof when parked to charge your batteries. Stay safe y’all

Tint the front windows and get a set of insulated cut outs for the back cab set up when you add the other stuff. Maybe get a 1200 inverter set up under the glove compartment for better power usage.

I got truck camping all the time. One tip is when you sleep put your a bag of clothes underneath your legs for some support.
You can sleep in your 5ft bed if you sleep diagonally. There is also a tent you can use that extends the bed by being able to leave the tailgate open. That's what I use if I sleep in there with my girlfriend. But if I'm alone I can sleep in a 5ft bed diagonally completely fine. (Bed diagonally is over 6ft long) I am 5'11. Let me know if you have any questions in the setup.
Y'all need to get a power inverter. It plugs into your cigarette lighter and the inverter has regular plugs so you can charge whatever you need. You will need to be sure and start your truck periodically so it doesn't kill your battery. God Bless
Enjoyed this one, I'm curious to see where the camper build takes you! I charge my batteries off of a portable battery box. If you need 12v off the battery with the key off you could wire in a live outlet pretty easily.
A power inverter is a good investment, I wired my phone charger and dash cam into my fuse panel to where they constantly power even when the key is off, it also has a low voltage regulator, so if my battery drops to low it kills the power to them to prevent completely draining my battery

when i camp in a vehicle, i run the engine for a bit if its cold or i need to charge batteries or whatnot, then i turn the car off when im pretty sleepy. always leave the windows cracked for the condensation, even if its cold out, those side window deflectors are nice if its raining or snowing, but a t shirt over the crack will work too

Get yourself a split charger setup what goes on a caravan, 2nd battery charges as your driving around, and if you ever leave your lights on by accident or leave your ignition on well charging whatever and truck dont start, by the press of a button you've other battery will become your primary battery to then start the truck, which will then start charging the batteries again.
The best way to tell if it’s a sauger is not by the dorsal fin... look at the tail and if there isn’t the patch of white at the bottom then it is a sauger

The best way to charge your things is to start the truck and leave it running so you won’t run the battery down because the alternator well keep the battery good

I love truck camping. I have a Tacoma as well with a decked system in the bed which makes organizing my camping equipment easy. Definitely want to invest in a roof top tent. Cheers and tight lines.

There are a lot of options for your truck camping. Do your research on roof, on bed, and shell-tents. It would be cool to see an on bed unit that replaces your current shell. Another great video guys
Add a 12v outlet, wire it to the battery with a fuse. At least you could charge the phone. Also if your taco has the bed 120v it's on at 100w without the truck on, just push the dash button

Don't leave car battery on or you won't move in the morning. My best recommendation is get some power banks or you can buy big portable batteries that are essentially generators

I have the same truck and I would recommend if you have to charge things have the engine on and everything, if you just have the battery on and charge things over night you will pretty much always wake up to a dead battery
The phone charger should never be able to kill your battery overnight unless the battery is going bad. Don't leave the key on though look for a port that stays on without needing the key turned there is usually one.

very cool boys. I used to have a Tacoma like yours and have done the camping/fishing trip as well. I've slept in the bed diagonally. I would recommend Bedrug, makes it really nice inside. I'm not a fan of sleeping in the cab like you guys done, it kills my back. Now I have a Tundra. I've considered when the weather gets warmer, set up a Coleman shelter behind the bed for extra cooking/lounging area.

They make tents that connect to the back of a truck with a topper allowing you to leave the tailgate open giving you enough room to lay down. Also make custom mattresses to fit in truck beds. Pimp that ish out my guy!!!

Wassup bro keep up the good work and the best way to charge in your car is by turning it on because you could kill your battery but if it’s just for a little bit like 30-40 minutes max you’re good. Since you have a new car you can charge it a bit longer but you’ll need a jump if you do it constantly

If you charge stuff w just the battery on you’ll drain the battery, but it’s not a big worry if it’s just for like 30 mins or so

Some kind of foot rest in the front might more comfortable for sleeping and making a separate power bank(solar) for charging, so you know you can start your car and dip if you had to.
