      So simple, i can't see how protestants not only go of course with the understanding, but how they would not admit to “following the many disciples” that walked away from Jesus when they could not agree with the literal understanding. Pride, perhaps.

    The portion on assurance of salvation is 100% accurate. In my life as a protestant, which is the vast majority of my life, I had constant fears along the lines of "what if my conversion wasn't genuine?", especially as I sinned. When converting to Catholicism this past winter (confirmed at Easter Vigil), I was often asked "how will you have assurance of your salvation, how will you have peace?". Since crossing the Tiber, I have never felt more assurance of my state with God than following confession. Hearing the words of the priest in persona Christi, "Your sins are forgiven, go in peace" is the assurance I had always been lacking in the protestant world.

      This is my same experience converting to orthodoxy, instead of always worrying whether or not I was “truly” saved, the only thing I worry about now is if I have broken God’s heart. A Protestant objection is how we’ve made Christ as a “fearful judge”, but I was never more scared of God than when I was a Protestant. No assurance of true salvation, especially when I sinned and walked away from God. Since finding the truth I am no longer ruled by a fear of Hell or not being truly saved. Once saved always saved is a recipe for paranoia. Knowing that though I fall I have God as my Father welcoming back His prodigal is so much more assuring.

      I can relate to this, back when I struggled with Masturbation it felt as if I was somehow never enough, that I was doomed to succumb to my flesh. If It weren't for confession, my scruples would have led to me renouncing the faith entirely. It felt so peaceful, knowing that even after failing uncountable times, that I could always find a guaranteed assurance, even If that state of grace didn't last long. It was as if I had the ability to restart my life again, with a fresh new beginning, every week.

    Coming from a southern Baptist background, I had no knowledge of "church history." Then I started to wonder what was the first church like? What was first apostle's church like? What was it like to seat with Jesus and listening to his teachings? I did not know Jesus in the southern Baptist church. This lead me to the Catholic Church and church history. There were four views of the Eucharist in the early church. In his magnum opus, History of the Christian Church, historian Philip Schaff (Philip Schaff, History of the Christian Church, Volume 2, [Hendrickson Publishers, 2010], pp. 241-245; Philip Schaff, History of the Christian Church, Volume 3, [Hendrickson Publishers, 2010], pp. 494-500) documents the four views the early church held in regards to the way in which Christ was associated with the bread and wine. You had the
      (1) mystical view of Ignatius, Justin Martyr, Irenaeus and Cyril of Jerusalem which said the body and blood of Jesus are mystically in union with the elements leading to a sort of repetition of the incarnation, though no change in substance actually takes place as in later Romanism;
      (2) the symbolic view of Tertullian, Cyprian, Eusebius, Gregory Nazianzen, Macarius the Elder, Theodoret, Augustine and Gelasius which said the Eucharist symbolizes the body and blood of Jesus and is a commemoration, not Rome’s literalistic transubstantiation;
      (3) the allegorical or spiritual view of Clement of Alexandria, Origen and Athanasius which said the believer receives the spiritual but not physical blood and life of Jesus at Mass; and
      (4) the literalistic view of Hilary, Ambrose and Gaudentius which affirmed the bread and wine as being the literal transformed body and blood of Jesus which is basically in line with the modern Roman Catholic system. The Roman view is in the minority, while the symbolic and mystical views seem to be the most primitive and popular.”

    as a Lutheran, it annoys me so much when people like Allen Parr make Protestantism out to be low church, non sacramental, and osas. i would rather go to a Catholic church than a Protestant low church because even though i disagree with Catholics on points about justification (which isn't as grave as a difference as people make it out to be) or the treasury of merit, at least Catholics realize the importance of the sacraments and that we must continue in the faith. and Trent saying that "Only God can get me to heaven but you and I can certainly get ourselves to hell." seems very similar to the Lutheran view which would be that we don't preserve ourselves in the faith, God the Holy Spirit does, but we can also still resist God's grace which is a reality we should acknowledge as possible.

      I appreciate your thoughts. I agree, there are certainly meaningful differences between us as Catholics and Lutherans, but you are right about this issue. We as Catholics have to be careful not to say "Protestants believe [X]" as if all Protestants are one and the same, but it is also all too common for some Protestants to say "Catholics are wrong because they believe [X]" and not realize that they are actually denying a common or even majority held belief/practice that other Protestants affirm as well.

It also breaks my heart that so many believe Catholics are not Christian’s. It seems really disingenuous of him to not investigate the teachings of the Eucharist. I discovered that without this belief, one would not even be considered a Christian back before 100 AD. I was shocked to find out what St Ignatius and others who learned from the disciples taught. It blows my mind how early church history is not being taught. At the very least, he should study history first. I’m so happy to leave Protestantism behind. His comparison of Catholics praying to saints, as necromancy just proves how sola scriptura is wrong. These people believe they get to interpret all the scriptures however they want to 😢

      @@FleurPillager I would think that a Christian would understand that eternal life is exactly that .. eternal life. For the righteous is doesn't start after death and it doesn't end after death. Alan mentions necromancy. Asking a saint to pray for us is not necromancy. Necromancy is trying to communicate with the dead. Communication is a two-way conversation. I speak to them and expect them to engage in a conversation with me. Catholics do not engage in that. When we ask a saint to pray for us, just as we ask our friends here... the prayer we ask them to pray for us goes ONE WAY...to God in the name of the Blessed Holy Trinity. Why would we ask saint to pray for us? We usually ask a saint that has experienced what we feel we are experiencing or a saint we have something in common with to pray for us .. We pray to God. Just because we ask a Saint to pray for us doesn't mean we bypass God...but we know our prayers will usually be what we think we need, not what we truly need. The saint will pray for what we need which will bring us closer to Christ.. ..while our friends will pray for what our earthly minds want...

      I want to explain to you why God sees our works: A lot of people claim, "Once saved, always saved." But there is something they completely forget about--the carnal nature. When we are saved, we are not automatically released from our carnal nature. We must crucify it. That's why Jesus says to take up our Cross.
      A lot of people say, "Works can't get you into heaven. Only grace!" And they are correct. But grace links me up to the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit is active! He wants to work for God! Just because I am linked to the Holy Spirit, that doesn't make me a self-indulgent slob. Just thinking that is blasphemy! Because I am linked with the Holy Spirit, He does His works through me! He wants to serve God, and He does it through me!
      Let me share a story with you: There is a doctor trying to work on a patient. But the patient is being wheeled around by a nurse who won't let him stay put in his wheelchair. Every time the doctor tries to get to the patient, the nurse whizzes him away. The Doctor is Jesus. The Nurse is the carnal nature. And the Patient is you and I. The carnal nature always wants to be in control. The carnal nature can be tamed and can even follow rules because it wants the spotlight. It wants to feel self-righteous. But, there's one thing the carnal nature can't do: it can't be reborn. So, the patient has to look at the nurse and scream, "GET OUT! Leave me alone!" and then the doctor can get to work. The patient isn't doing a good work when he tells the nurse, "Get out!" On the contrary, he is NOT doing what the carnal nature wants.
      Wouldn't it be better if the patient was connected to life support, the Holy Spirit, and the doctor can work freely? It would be far better if the patient was critical and supported by the Holy Spirit's life support, then if he was being wheeled around by the carnal nature.

Unsurprisingly, no Calvinists at the time were willing to have a disputation with him in public, so he had to write a very long letter instead addressing the Calvinist sect.
