First time I saw them was in 2001 when they supported Superheist in Perth. Fell in love with them then and saw them about half a dozen times in the year that followed that. Great band, and well deserving of their success.
Tool is one of my all time favorite bands. Just discovered these guys, and there's no denying the resemblance. Still they are far from just a copy band and they write extremely good songs. Just enjoy the music as it is, there's nothing more to it really.
i grew up on tool & im proud when someone shows influence. artists will respect this -those who do not create cannot understand this. ive listened to them & primus since early 90s when everyone hated em both -& now im happy to see their influence passed down -karnivool isnt copying anything -theyre doin a good job of making their own sound -they could be way more blatant about it like some others
I definitely agree, both bands BOT and Karnivool are awesome... Karnivool has definitely evolved into an incredible band....I so wish they would come to the US. Synopsis is my fav..they were supposed to release new album in Jan...now possibly this month? come on guys....get it together!!! =)
without a doubt the strongest band to come out of Australia in a long time. Masterpiece after masterpiece, Fuck the Tool vs Vool argument both bands are amazing, Vool have their own sound with amzing lyrics and tight music. Long live Karnivool
As a huge Tool fan, I'd just like to say that this band is nothing like Tool in ANY way...musicwise, appearance, anything. That being said, this band is awesome
People keep comparing these guys with Tool, but personally I find these guys a LOT more interesting than Tool. I liked Tool in 8th grade, but since then I just don't enjoy their music anymore. Yay Karnivool! You guys are great!
It's so funny how everyone tries to compare these guys to Tool just because they are are also a very good prog rock band with good feel. Tool kicks ass and Karnivool kicks ass. They are different bands and neither sounds like they are the other. I did not think I was hearing a new Tool song when I first heard Karnivool. If a new Tool song is played I will know it is Tool before anyone tells me. They are that distinct....
Karnivool could not POSSIBLY be any better than tool. Every tool song sounds the same. Talented guys, obviously... they have their own sound... but Karnivool rock so much harder. So much more diverse and melodic. This track rocks so hard, can't wait to see what they do next!
Do you think this song is weak? I think this is one of the strongest songs i have ever heard. It is both alternative, intellectually challenging and can also appeal to a "commercial" audience. And the video is amazing.
man this song is the shit! im a big fan of themata but this song blows anything off that album out of the water, hopefully they continue this sound throughout the new album. birds can step aside because karnivool are back in the house 2009!
Well, it's not necessarily about who can play what Tool can play. It's who can write what Tool can write. I'm a semi-professional drummer, and I've been playing for 17 years. I can play almost anything, but almost nobody (including myself) would be able to conceptualize a song on the same scale they do. Songs like Lateralus, Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned, and Intension/Right in Two display IMMENSE musical intellect and compositional understanding that are extremely rare, especially these days.
the more i listen to that song, the bettert it gets! can't wait for sydney! and i hope they hurry up and get the album out! im like a fat kid waiting for cake!
First few listens I didn't like it but this track is beginning to grow on me. I hope the new album isn't all like this track though. Shame on those who plan to illegally download this too. We gotta support genuine Aussie talent - and talent these guys are.
Cool film clip. Some aural/visual syncing was well co-ordinated, and decent effects (sans the insects), too. Good track, too. Will be picking up the album.
I like that the new album is a difetent direction... I hope that they come back to heavy mosh style after this album. While I like both styles, nothing beats noshing to thes guys... Realised that tonight at the metro. Holy shit. Winded and threw up on a girl. U know the music Is rocking when that happens
Why cant everyone just see music for what it is... every one draws inspiration from somewhere and in my honest opinion Tool and Karnivool are two of the only bands that are truly exploring all that music has to offer. The people that bash Karnivool for being "Tool rip offs" listen to bands like Lady GaGa...obviously there are some that are excluded
I hate people who say you can't compare Karnivool with Tool, it's true that they aren't similar in many aspects, and that makes them comparable, you can't compare an apple with an apple, because they aren't different so there's nothing to compare, so you CAN compare Karnivool withTool, for example, both bands have long and dynamic songs
Puzzled by the tool comparisons. Seen both bands live more times than I can count with my fingers and they're not even remotely similar. Tool's sets are very calculated, epic sounding affairs. They draw you in to a parallel universe, isolate you with the music and assault your senses. Very serious stuff. Karnivool's sets are uplifting and packed with character and charm that makes you smile from ear to ear. Mesmerising stuff. Both are thoroughly engaging bands but the similarities end there.
If you are a real Tool fan you will know this band is different in every single aspect possible. If you sometimes think something like: "This part remindes me of Tool", it doesn't... It remindes you of progressive metal. Period. If you don't like it then don't listen to it.
When you compare them to live preformances, nothing compares to Tool, but as the huge ass Tool fan that I am, I'd have to say that people comparing Karnivool and Tool aren't completly off. Karnivool even said Tool is one of their main inspirations
For christ sake. Get these guys on the Big Day Out main stage NOW instead of all those over-rated, overseas hip-hop crap that for the last few years has infected the Big Day Out. KARNIVOOL. BIG SOUND. BIG STAGE. DO IT Big Day Out organisers.
Its pretty good. I think its down to personal preference. Personally i like Persona the best, and as you can see the sound on the new album is quite different. Its still awesome non the less, id recommend it.
I hate to say it, but although I love this song, Sound Awake has yet to grow on me the way Themata did. That being said, Themata is such a Masterpiece...
I agree, The insult part was based on my personal opinion. Though, I ca't see the link with three days grace. That music is easy listening with straight forward riffs, and simple lyrics written in a common structure. Karnivool is way more melodic and experimental. Very variable riffs, and thought about lyrics.
Wow, after reading the comments you'd think it was illegal for artists to have influences. I love bands that I enjoy listening to. Why does it matter if you can hear the influence of another band in their music? That's all it is, an influence. You want a band that sound exactly like Tool then check out Prisma.
Sound Awake took longer to grow on me than Themata did. However, when it did grow on me, the pay off was moreso than when Themata did. The album was made to be a grower as well, so, I don't know, maybe a little more time?
There's also similar asymmetrical meter stuff but in an integrated way, similar to how Tool do it, rather than the "LOOK AT ME, I'M PLAYING IN 9" Dream Theater way.
Alternative metal is a very interesting genre, caus the bands in it are barely compared and noone really knows they are all of the same genre, Tool, System Of A Down, Stone Sour, Slipknot, Faith No More, Rage Against The Machine, they are never really put in the same boat and they all have very unique sounds...
Cog and Karnivool are both Prog Rock, and that is particualarly awesome beacuse they sound nothing alike and it proves that there isnt a formula for songs in certain styles. Killswitch and all that other crap should listen and learn fomr Cog and Karnivool
I agree, its the closest australia has come to Tool. But i still think musically in each musicians own right they fall short a little. If they stay around and keep this direction for another 10-15 years then they should make some massive movement for australian music.
Intense single! Love it. The guitars resembling swarming bees is friggin' genius. Top musicians right here!
Just upvoted an 11 year old post. We’ll see haha. Still an amazing F song
The bass man... the bass
For the love of god these guys need to make another album already
First time I saw them was in 2001 when they supported Superheist in Perth. Fell in love with them then and saw them about half a dozen times in the year that followed that. Great band, and well deserving of their success.
so this is what shaggy does when he's not with scooby
Literally the first thought that came to mind when I saw Ian Kenny in this video ahaha
Nice one
This song about 20% of shaggies power.
This man is a genius
I saw them on Monday in Glasgow and they were fantastic. You shouldn't be disappointed when you see them.
Tool is one of my all time favorite bands. Just discovered these guys, and there's no denying the resemblance. Still they are far from just a copy band and they write extremely good songs. Just enjoy the music as it is, there's nothing more to it really.

god, im like the only person around where i live that has ever heard of karnivool...i LOVE IT SO MUCH
without a doubt the strongest band to come out of Australia in a long time. Masterpiece after masterpiece, Fuck the Tool vs Vool argument both bands are amazing, Vool have their own sound with amzing lyrics and tight music. Long live Karnivool

Saw these guys supporting for Skindred on Friday, absolutely fantastic in my opinion!
1:12 is honestly the best part IMO
Karnivool could not POSSIBLY be any better than tool. Every tool song sounds the same. Talented guys, obviously... they have their own sound... but Karnivool rock so much harder. So much more diverse and melodic. This track rocks so hard, can't wait to see what they do next!
hes rockin the holly valance strategically placed special effects thing
Do you think this song is weak?

Woot for Perth!! Fly that flag brothers!!!!
the more i listen to that song, the bettert it gets! can't wait for sydney! and i hope they hurry up and get the album out! im like a fat kid waiting for cake!
Scooby Doo where are you? Love this band. Oz rock rules.
This whole band is hot. Especially Drew. LOVE the new track boys.
Love the buzzing insecty sound.
totally agree, the bee buzz sound solo is perfect
Holy shit this is a fucking banger, especially that chorus is so satisfying!
Most amazing Vool so far!!!
ah. i'm so happy for these guys.
the new album is shit hot.
they've come a long way from that band that opened for cog all those years ago.
So great that they can tour in America!
Best Aussie band ever.
@Timmydope
PLENTY
Vicarious, Schism, Parabola, and the list goes ON AND ON.
First few listens I didn't like it but this track is beginning to grow on me. I hope the new album isn't all like this track though.
Shame on those who plan to illegally download this too. We gotta support genuine Aussie talent - and talent these guys are.
I am in love with this song and with Karnivool. Very excited about hearing more new stuff. Sweeeeeeeeeeeeet!!!!
First song i have heard by them and they freakin rule!
Cool film clip. Some aural/visual syncing was well co-ordinated, and decent effects (sans the insects), too.
Good track, too. Will be picking up the album.
they can't be serious O.o this video is one of the most awesome vids i've ever seen! it's good to c a vid that fits so perfectly to a track like this!

mirroring many of the comments already here, themata was good, sound awake is incredible, hands down.

I like that the new album is a difetent direction... I hope that they come back to heavy mosh style after this album. While I like both styles, nothing beats noshing to thes guys... Realised that tonight at the metro. Holy shit. Winded and threw up on a girl. U know the music Is rocking when that happens
Can't wait for these guys to jump the ditch to New Zealand for a visit:)

Dan

wicked song made once again by the boys!
loving the drumming on the track too.
keep switching between vool and birds!
can't decide!!
I hate people who say you can't compare Karnivool with Tool,
it's true that they aren't similar in many aspects, and that makes them comparable,
you can't compare an apple with an apple, because they aren't different so there's nothing to compare,

I agree. I do not own a single pirated song, but if you cannot obtain something then go for it till it becomes available.
you guys always have the best videos
if you love this song, you wish you were me, hearing it for the first time right now. E P I C !
I do -- but to be fair, it still slaps 11 years later.
Karnivool continues to kick some serious ass! W00T!
Flat out killer, as usual.
this song is brill :)
If you are a real Tool fan you will know this band is different in every single aspect possible. If you sometimes think something like: "This part remindes me of Tool", it doesn't... It remindes you of progressive metal. Period. If you don't like it then don't listen to it.

Its pretty good.

Sick! love karnivools stiz.
I hate to say it, but although I love this song, Sound Awake has yet to grow on me the way Themata did.
That being said, Themata is such a Masterpiece...
I saw these guys on Wednesday in Melbourne. In-fucking-credible.
That was at the Sunday one, and on the Tuesday I was back on the "balcony area" with no one in front of me.
Amazing - I can't wait to get full new album !
Sugar Army are supporting.

Damn, every time I here this song I want my bass to miraculously grow two more strings.
lucky bastard! i gotta wait til december :(

I hope they put this on Guitar Hero :) I'd love to have a crack at this on the drums. Karnivool rule. My new fav band. Epic sounds
saw these last with skindred at roadmender, they blew my mind really good live!
Sound Awake took longer to grow on me than Themata did. However, when it did grow on me, the pay off was moreso than when Themata did. The album was made to be a grower as well, so, I don't know, maybe a little more time?
Just for that im gunna buy 3 of sound awake albums and go and download all of COG's albums....yeh hows that for some spite :P
haha loving the reaction of people to this song, awesome.
YYYEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!

If you'd like to see more ridiculous Karnivool vs. Tool arguments, scroll down now!

He's in two bands.
That's that.
amazing song!!

Optimus Prime came over to my house today and fixed the washing machine.
When did the switch to the Marshall DSL happen? where did the XXX go?
Thank you. Totally different sounds!
Retro that is
Agreed!
