  • Well.. here we are again. And for the first time I am SPEECHLESS. This is BOTH of our FIRST TIME REACTIONS to Band Maid with their song "Domination".
    #firsttimehearing #firsttimelistening #metal #metalreaction #reactionvideo #reaction #bandmaid #bandmaidreaction
    Band-Maid:
Band-Maid is a Japanese rock band known for their unique blend of hard rock and a maid-café-inspired image, which contrasts sharply with their aggressive musical style. Formed in Tokyo in 2013, the band consists of five members: Saiki (vocalist), Miku Kobato (guitarist and vocalist), Kanami (lead guitarist), Misa (bassist), and Akane (drummer). Despite their maid costumes, which are typical of Japanese maid cafés and meant to embody a kind and welcoming persona, their music packs a powerful punch with heavy guitar riffs, fast-paced drums, and potent vocals.
    "Domination":
"Domination" is one of Band-Maid’s most dynamic tracks, featured on their 2018 album "World Domination". The song showcases the band’s technical prowess and energy, with a compelling blend of hard rock and metal elements that drive its forceful rhythm. Lyrically, "Domination" speaks to themes of breaking free from constraints and taking control, mirroring the band's own approach to defining their identity and sound in the rock genre. The track is a fan favorite due to its high-energy performance, catchy hook, and the skillful musicianship of its members.
This song, much like their other work, represents Band-Maid's mission to challenge perceptions and dominate the world stage with their unique and powerful music style.

Not only do they expertly play their own instruments, but they also write their own original songs. Their brilliant chief lyrist and rhythm guitarist is Miku Kobato and their songs genius composer is their lead guitarist Kanami Tono. The other members of the band also significantly contribute to the final song version to produce a cohesive whole of amazing music. Suggest you watch their November 2023 live performance of 'Hate?' performed at the Yokohama Arena during their 10th anniversary celebration tour. Cheers.

And a thing about the maid outfits,Rob & Stephanie: as Fans and Maidiacs know, Miku -- the 2nd guitarist, lyricist, founder and who worked at a maid cafe -- wanted to show that everyday working "Kawaii" girls dressed as maids in high heels while having fun and smiling could rock as hard as any guy band sweating it up in their hip, poor tortured artists "outfits"... and by showing that contrast (the Gap), it would generate interest, which it so successfully has done! It also represents Woman Power (Equality), which is an important theme with the Maids.
Now they show up as Maids for all band business and interviews, etc. and have created a long-lasting, unmistakable, visual band brand. Very cleaver, Miku. Your diabolical plan for world domination is working, Po! Of course, none of this would work if their music and stage performance wasn't at such a remarkably high level. Band-Maid is considered by many of their fans and Maidiacs to be the best hard rock band in the world - maid outfits and all!

I heard that you toured across the United States last year and performed at 15 to 16 locations, all of which were sold out. In December last year, I performed a one-man stage in Japan for 3 and a half hours and 33 songs. I think the bassist, drummer, and lead guitar are world class. Both the singer and the chorus are wonderful. Especially playing on stage is the best. I think they're probably one of the world's best rock bands right now. I'm looking forward to the future.

Maid Cafes in Japan are generally family friendly and themed as Maids serving a meal for their Masters and Princesses, including a variety show of singing and dancing, Po! Miku (2nd V, Rhythm G, 1st Lyricist, Head Pigeon) worked at a Maid Cafe in Tokyo while pursuing a career in the music industry and came up with the concept called "The Gap." She pitched the idea to her agency and searched out to put together her band of maids, which is being celebrated today 5/10 with a soldout concert at Zepp Haneda Tokyo. As a musician from the 70's, Band Maid is who you go see after your gig. They are Special, Po! Down the Pigeon hole we go, Po! 🦍🍌

Maid Cafe’s are definitely playing on the people want to interact with cute girls dressed in cute costumes. I wouldn’t say it’s sketchy, but it’s definitely a vibe.
The creator of the band (rhythm guitar) worked at one and came up with the idea. She pulled a lot of stuff from them, concerts are called Servings (okyuji) they call their fans masters and princesses (we call ourselves maidiacs) there is a part of the show called omajinai time where… well, in the show it’s a fun call and response mixed with comedy bit that’s a lot of fun. Their concerts are fantastic, I’ve been to 2.
Anyway, they are awesome. You wanted more songs as good as this? Good news, I consider this a pretty middle of the pack song and they only have like 140.
Try out Play (live), Dice (MV), blooming (MV), Hate? (Live), Don’t you tell ME (live)

Welcome to Band-Maid! The best hard rock band I have heard in my 58 years on this planet. They don't stick to any one genre and often mix genres in songs. They are extremely diverse and have an extensive back catalogue featuring Punk, Pop-Punk, Hard-Rock, Classic Rock, Metal, Prog, Blues, Jazz, Groove, Rap etc. From face melting 220 bpm punk-prog to ballads, instrumentals to acoustics they do it all. They can make you headbang, they can make you pogo, they can make you cry like a baby. They are also five of the nicest people in music, without a shred of ego. They are funny and fun and world class musicians to boot. They are currently into their 11th year with the original line up.
Btw, Miku the rhythm guitarist (red rose) formed the band. She had the idea of Band-Maid after working as a maid in Japanese maid cafe's. (People take their kids to maid cafe's, there is nothing weird about them). Her idea is a concept called "The Gap" - that is what you see (cute maids) is NOT what you get (Hard Rock/Punk/Metal). They take the maid café concept literally. They call their concerts "servings" and their fans "Masters and Princesses". Oh, and Miku is an 810 year old small pigeon. Welcome to the pigeon hole Po!

"Domination" is a great place to start with Band-Maid -- it is right in the middle of their range. They play slower songs, they lay harder songs, but if you like "Domination" you are probably going to like a large part of their repertoire. Band-Maid write their own songs -- the gifted lead guitarist writes the music with input from the drummer and bassist, and the rhythm guitarist writes the lyrics with help from the singer.
You are right about Maid Cafes. The band was founded by the rhythm guitarist who had worked in a maid cafe. She liked the frills and the customer engagement, and thought of forming a band that combined the cuteness and engagement of cafe maids, alongside hard rock -- the "gap" between expectations and performance. The lead guitarist, bassist, and drummer are all professional musicians who have been playing instruments since they were young children. The rhythm guitarist -- the founder of the band -- started out as the singer, until they decided they needed more power and hired a second vocalist. So the founder took up learning guitar and has developed into a very decent rhythm guitarist until the tutelage of the lead guitar.
You might like to try the official live version of "Don't You Tell Me" and also the official live version of "Hate?" -- "Hate?" was written about a man the singer knew, who cheated on his partner. So "Hate?" is about cheating boyfriends -- and what the singer thinks of them. The singer has a very strong sense of loyalty to her friends, and consequently strongly negative feelings about their unfaithful partners! But this song contains great interplay between bass and lead guitar.

Welcome to the world of the Maid 🌎
The brain malfunctioning as a result of seeing cute maids rocking the house is intentional. Once the shock wears off? You will have a whole new appreciation for what they bring to the hard rock scene.
Some of Band Maid’s biggest fans include fellow rock stars, audio engineers and classic rock fans who had lost hope.
“Domination” is a common gateway. From here, please consider any of these:
“DICE,” OMV Hair metal done Maid style
“Onset,” official live. An instrumental piece of prog rock
“Don’t you tell ME,” official live. An early hit and one of my personal top 10
    Enjoy the ride 🚀

Great call outs on knowing about the Akhibara district and the maid cafe's. Yes, Miku, the rhythm guitarist worked in a maid cafe there a long time ago, which is where she got the idea for the band. Also, yes, Misa on bass is probably their best instrumentalist, and you'll find even more astounding playing from her on other tracks.
Great reaction from both of you! Rock on!

Welcome, Rob & Stephanie. You are embarking on (along with many others - over 200 million YT views plus over 40 million reactor plays!) an awesome, progressive, hard-rock journey with 5 incredible women. Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid:

BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of all rockers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Prog, Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Jazz, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Joy of Playing, Consistency (130+ songs), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destined for mega-stardom.
Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off-the-rails spectacular!
Band-Maid is the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 70 favorites! "Thrill" (2014) is a great place to start: ua-cam.com/video/Uds7g3M-4lQ/v-deo.html Their songs from albums Unleash, Unseen World, Conqueror, World Domination, Just Bring It, Brand New Maid, and New Beginning drive even more - Shambles, Warning, No God, Different, Black Hole, Rinne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Don’t You Tell Me, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on.
But don’t miss out on their powerful, beautifully written, mid-tempo songs like Daydreaming, Bestie, About Us, Memorable, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE, At The Drop Of A Hat, Mirage and Smile... or more punky like After Life, Don’t Let Me Down and Screaming… or funky like Bubble… or bluesy like Manners and The Dragon Cries… or poppy like Start Over… or a bit jazzy like Wonderland… or progressive like No God, Giovanni, and Black Hole… or cultural like the Band-Maiko series… or instrumentals like From Now On, Don’t Be Long, Onset, Without Holding Back and Going Nuts… or their many acoustic versions like Catharsis and Sayonakidori... and last but not least, their Anime hits (AniMaid) like Sense, Glory and Unleash!!!!! (from their own Anime MV (series?)): ua-cam.com/video/7LB_EPS48HE/v-deo.html)
And many songs are represented with over 50 well produced music videos. ua-cam.com/users/BANDMAID
Most performances should be experienced from their LIVE audience & online OKYUJI concerts:
 2023 Yokohama 10th Year Anniversary Concert “Endless Story” ua-cam.com/video/Za1y-RRVd70/v-deo.html
     ONLINE OKYU-JI (Feb. 11, 2021) “No God” ua-cam.com/video/nAdWnIRjGak/v-deo.html
     Tokyo's LINE CUBE SHIBUYA (February 14, 2020) “Domination” ua-cam.com/video/QbyQCJn6rYg/v-deo.html
     ZEPP 2018 “Real Existence” ua-cam.com/video/-qQnKILR5u0/v-deo.html
 Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 and other full concerts are on bandmaidprime.tokyo, bili, and official Band-Maid’s DVD/BD/CD.
And some of the better quality fan videos are excellent. Here’s two of what it’s like to see Band-Maid LIVE at an intimate venue:
 Shot by Pat McKee from their 2023 US tour concert in Detroit: ua-cam.com/video/DgxU-MVjta0/v-deo.html
     See the Maids 2023 Rockville Festival’s short-set perfection performance: ua-cam.com/video/vjZkNeoGmhc/v-deo.html
If you like Band-Maid, make sure to support them by purchasing some concert tickets, CD, DVD/BD & Merch, etc. bandmaid.tokyo
Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid.

    Band-Maid Members:
Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “StarQueen" - Lead vocals, arrangements and melodies. At 30 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Teacher) as band members call her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away her sometimes perceived, coldish persona. Saiki’s powerhouse performances, charisma, and voice focus the experience that’s driven her to the top echelon of hard rock frontwomen... or frontmen!
Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 32 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kuruppo! No, no, no… KURUPPO!!
Kanami Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 32 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more!
Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, 33 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumZilla” is the Party!
MISA (Me-Sa) "Barefoot Assassin" - Bass, 31 years old. An alluring free spirit driving her 5-string to rapturous low-ends while pulling off surprising counter leads with Kanami, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. Sometimes seen as the Mysterious One because she lets her instrument do the talking, the Assassin literally kills it… every note... uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA!
Maidiacs (Maid-e-acts) - Band-Maid’s crazed yet supportive, knowledgeable and loyal Super Fans.
    [BAND-MAID NEWS]
 BAND-MAID PRIME - Special Video Distribution Website. Along with nearly 50 great play-through’s by each member, concerts and skits, Band-Maid management / label(s) have included the Acoustic Christmas 2021, ZEPP 2018 and Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 concerts! Fans can now see more than 50 great live performances with awesome audio, etc. like Fate, I Can't Live Without You and the great MISA / Kanami exchange in Don't You Tell Me. Those concerts are two of the best produced & performed concerts ever recorded, IMO. bandmaidprime.tokyo
 The Maids SOLD OUT 2023 US & Mexico tour wrapped up and was a fantastic success. And so many great live fancams to watch! Their playing and antics were as fresh and fun to experience from first show to last. BRAVO Band-Maid!!!!! In addition, their Japan tour finished up with 13 concerts, AND they’re writing and recording for their new album. Their 10th Anniversary Tour concluded at Japan’s 17,000 seat Yokohama Arena on Nov. 26, 2023 and in Hong Kong Dec. 21! And their latest 10TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR SPIN OFF concert at KT ZEPP YOKOHAMA on February 22, 2024, where they played songs not performed at the 10th anniversary tour final at Yokohama Arena, was SOLD OUT!
     📢 JUST ANNOUNCED 📢
-- The Warning, a world-famous band from Mexico, and BAND-MAID will perform a dream two-band show! After meeting on our US tour in 2022, "The Warning" will be making their memorable first visit to Japan with BAND-MAID! Venue: EX THEATER RIPPONGI Date: Jun 12, 2024.
-- Incubus and Band-Maid at Tokyo Garden May 1, and… BAND-MAID released a new song, "Bestie," co-written with Mike Einziger of INCUBUS! The MV dropped May 1st.
-- BAND-MAID HALL TOUR 2024 -- June 28, 2024 (Fri) Nagoya City Public Hall, Aichi, Japan -- July 5, 2024 (Fri) Osaka, Fenice Sakai Main Hall, -- July 14, 2024 (Sun) Kanagawa Kenmin Hall, Kanagawa.

Thanks, guys, great first comments. If you like varied rock that includes ballads, mid-tempo, punk, metal, acoustic, and everything in between, this is your band. Even though there's something for everyone, every bar of their music is distinctively Band-Maid. Their main songwriter is Kanami (kah-nah-mee), lead guitar and all-round rock genius. The rhythm guitarist, primary lyricist, and back-up vocalist is Miku (mee-koo). She is the founder of the band and actually worked at @Home cafe, probably the most famous maid cafe in Akihabara. She came up with the idea of the "gap", the difference between the sweet maid look and the hard rockin' band. Their word-class rhythm section is comprised of MISA (mee-sah) on bass and Akane (ah-kah-nay) on drums. Their extraordinary lead vocalist is Saiki (sigh-key). You might want to check out some of their performances from their recent concert at Yokohama arena, for example, Don't You Tell ME, Hate, or Endless Story.

Listening to a few seconds of Band-Maid and thinking you have heard Band-Maid, is like thinking ‘picking your teeth with a toothpick’ means you’ve had a Michelin star meal and a $5,000 bottle of wine. (You haven’t, but unlike the ‘toothpick’ with Band-Maid a Michelin Star dinner is just the first verse.)
You can select any BM song you want. They always have catchy verses & choruses, and they never play a verse or chorus the same way twice in a song (yes, the same basic melody will be there but they always make noticeable arrangement changes to keep it interesting.
There are literally Band-Maid songs where after the first 10 or 15 times listens to it you finally find you are able to listen past that awesome guitar solo and notice the Bass is doing some incredible intricate and melodic bass run in the background … then it takes another 10 or 20 listens before you can get past the bass to hear the super subtle but complex and tasteful fill & rolls the drummer is playing …
If Band-Maid (Kanami, the lead guitarist) were to arrange the Corporate Tax Code, your comment section would be full of Corporate Accountants telling you you just have to listen to their Pg 206, section 4, sub-section 12b paragraph 1 interpretation of the rule’s implications! ;-)

Kanami the guitarist will compose the music usually and Miku (red rose) rhythm guitarist will usually write the lyrics. But there are exceptions. These ladies have been together for ten years and Miku did work in a Maid Cafe and it was her idea to get the Gap between the music they play and the cute look. Based as was said on Maid Cafe's. They play on each concert being a serving and calling fans Masters and Princess. They have a spot where Miku will get the audience to respond and chant back Maid Cafe type chants. It is all brilliantly done and fun and tongue in cheek. The rest of the band play up the fact they are less enthusiastic. Keep delving into the music. Anime themes they write and instrumentals and everything from Rock and Metal to ballads. Thery have toured the US a few times and did one World tour some years ago.

Thank you for your reaction. It is true that Maid cafés are related to this but Japanese culture, like manga or anime, also play on the expected innocence of household staff and Maids actually being bodyguards, assassins or very powerful beings in one way or another. I would argue that Band Maid also use the same contradiction of expectations with somewhat heavy music contrasting to cute outfits.
    My musical journey with the maids started when I was looking for material from Scandal, another all girl band from Osaka, and being suggested the MV for Manners by Band Maid. I finally listen to it and realized this is something very special. I discovered that they have a long and rich history and the song writing is fantastic. So I jumped a little bit when you asked for one more good song, how many do you want? I prefer to listen to band maid per album but if you want to stay with live videos I think it would be interesting with a more recent live of and older song so I suggest Puzzle, official live;

The maid cafe in Japan may seem cringy to Western eyes.....but it's Japan...lol. the founder Miku with the twin pony tails worked in a maid cafe before forming Bandmaid and had to convince the other ladies to try the maid outfits.
I can understand most western music fans reluctance towards young girls in maid outfits but Japan is the Cosplay capital of the world. About 15 years ago i went to one ( can't remembet the name ) with my gf and it was like Disney....they greet you in that cutsey Minnie Mouse way and you get served a meal and tea/coffee plus dessert something like a more refined Disney Breakfast in Orlando but slightly less expensive. They'll put on a show with singing and dancing and you take pictures and visit the gift shop afterwards. I remember walking out with a $75 pink and polka dot teaset .........
Anyway....thank you for reaction and i'm glad you guys enjoyed it.

Band-Maid - Bestie - I highly recommend it this song, the song is generally in English. Japanese singers all sing in a completely Western manner, they are proficient in both growling and screaming, and their voices are not always high

Like many, BabyMetal was my introduction to the J-metal/J-rock scene and through comments on their videos i was introduced to Band-Maid 5 years ago and never looked back... the Maidiacs have arrived in force to help educate you on the band and their history, and like many I suggest you check out their live version of "HATE?" as the next step on your 130+ song Band-Maid journey.
