Dany’s attack on the Lannister Army shows that she listened to both Tyrion & Lady Olennna. Remember, Lady Olenna told Dany to: “Be a Dragon” if she wants to survive & win the Iron Throne.
But at the same, Tyrion told Dany not to use her Dragons to burn down whole cities in Westeros because it would cause mayhem & lots of collateral damage.
So Dany made a compromise. And took BOTH of their advice to heart.
She took her Dragon and aggressively brought the War to The Lannisters... but she fought them in an open field... which was far enough away from King’s Landing so innocent civilians would not get killed. That was a Brilliant Move by Khaleesi. Well played.

7:30 Hey Steven- you're missing one big element and I think that's why you're confused. Ever since they cut off Ned's head, Robb and all those that followed him have claimed their independence from the Seven Kingdoms. That's why Robb (and later Jon) was called KING in the North. Seasons 2-3 were basically a failed "revolutionary war" for the north. 300 years before now, the last true King in the North bent the knee to the invading Aegon Targaryen and since then they've been a subject. (think Scotland to England) So since Robb, the people of the North have had their hopes on a free and independent north and they selected Jon as their new leader. Now he's with a young Targaryen beauty... If he gives up their best chance at Independence after 300 years, the people will be eternally pissed and never trust him again. If you re-watch the Jon and Dany scenes (first meeting, cliffside, & cave) it should make more sense.

Yep. Biggest point here is, there are still seven very much separate kingdoms. They weren't always united, in fact looking at the Westeros timeline, it's only very recently been united under a single king. Thousands of years of history and houses and kingdoms scuffling with each other, and there's only been a "king of the seven kingdoms" for the latest 300 years.

The ultimate risk of Jon bending the knee is essentially relinquishing his status AS king in the North. He would be pledging all the Northern houses TO Danearys, which in his mind the Northern lords will hate it. That is why he is so hesitant, because the north put all their trust in Jon.

The ultimate risk of Jon not bending the knee is that Dany can obliterate the North if she chooses. She has three dragons and two large armies. It's no contest. That is, if the WW don't get there first. Trust or no trust, he ultimately has no choice. When Robb was named King in the North, a key argument was that the dragons were gone. Well, they're back.

Daenerys and Jon have more in common than just blood. They both are willing to fight on the battlefield for their people. I heard Kings back in the day did as well, and I cannot think of a better way to inspire and motivate the soldiers.
Jon doesn't want to bend the knee because he barely knows Daenerys, and because of this he cannot convince the North to follow her.
Daenerys gave many opportunities for the Tarly's to bend the knee and by following through with her sentencing she showed the other soldiers that she keeps her word. She couldn't keep a powerful lord alive while he openly denounced her. Also, they died quickly from Drogon's direct fire blast. Cersei and the Tarly's didn't offer Olenna a choice.

Also, the Starks weren't at war with him. Daenerys is going back home to claim what is rightfully hers, and what never was Cersei's. What Daenerys did was like what Stannis did to Mance. "Daenerys and Jon have more in common than just blood. They both are willing to fight on the battlefield for their people."
That is categorically false, Jon fights to protect the realm, he doesn't seek power, he is given that power by people around him. He was literally voted into leadership twice. Daenerys seeks power and takes it by force (by Dragons most of the time). Her primary objective since S2 was to reclaim Iron Throne and re-establish Targaryen Dynasty. The people she helped along the way was mostly a bi-product of her conquest. If she really wanted to help people, she could have stayed back in Meereen and help restructure the society (slavers bay) she "liberated", but she moved on to her another conquest (Westeros) leaving Meereen in the hands of a bunch of sell swords who clearly don't give a shit about that place. When you talk about how Jon should bend the knee, you have to remember that he has probably not seen the first six seasons of Game of Thrones. All he knows about Dani is that her father burned his uncle alive. Also, his first impression of her is that she declares him more or less to be her enemy. It's sweet that you want all the 'good guys' to get along, but within the logic of the story it's almost illogical that they theme up as quickly as they do.

With Dany forbidding pillaging the countryside, the Westerosi forces have no incentive to leave their castles and engage. The dragons are her power advantage, but they do her no good sitting on the sidelines; they have to be used and she's the only one who can direct them.

So, couple quick points. Dany needed to lead the attack on the Lannister army as that battle was as much a demonstration of power as it was a strategic move. It's akin to dropping the bomb on Hiroshima. Up to that point Cersei and Jamie believed that they could outmanoeuvre Dany. That they could frustrate and bleed her to a slow defeat. Like Tywin in had done with Robb. By unleashing the Dothraki and Drogon she sent a huge message. You can see how it affected Jamie. Second thing is that the North are done bowing to Kings Landing. They want to self govern and become independent. If John bends the knee to a southern monarch he is going against that. It's not a matter of pride for him. (or at least it's not JUST a matter of pride.) All those nobles that called him King in the North wouldn't take that well...and he's only just United them.

Another Novel Note: Surprisingly, using dragons to execute men who had surrendered was not a common occurrence during the Targaryen reign. Death by dragon remained limited to open battle. The first record of an execution by dragon was when King Aegon II fed his half-sister Rhaenyra to his dragon at the end of the Dance of the Dragons. Even the infamous Maegor Targaryen (Maegor the Cruel) used hangings and beheadings rather than dragon fire.

Notification squad! Yaaay two parters all the way to the end. Love this! Yes, Daenerys is important but there is a theme going on - if a leader will not fight and risk their life for their troops, why should they fight for them? Kings of old have fought on the battlefield with their men for this very reason. She inspires them, and they respond in kind. Jon understands this, that is why he alluded to that when he parlayed with Ramsay before the Battle of the Bastards.

Jon said it himself: He doesn't know Danaerys, he can't bend the knee. We know Danaerys, so we think he should. Ned knew Robert, so he bent the knee. In season 6 episode 10 Jon was proclaimed king, at that moment The North sesceded from the seven kingdoms. At the moment they're not a part of the kingdoms and to them on paper whoever rules the kingdoms, Cersei or Danaerys, isn't their business. Jon don't have to bend the knee to anyone, ever, he is a sovereign king of an independent kingdom like the North was before the Targaryen invasion. Not now, not eventually, not ever if he don't want to and his bannermen would support him. Lady Mormont is completely uninterested in Danaerys and so is Glover, Umber and the others.

Ned knew Robert well and chose to support him which meant going against the crown. That's a decision that he had to live with for the rest of his life, like Jon with Daenerys. On top of that, the North does NOT like the Targaryens and they don't trust southerners in general. After Ned Stark lost his head, the North lost trust. "The one who passes the sentence should swing the sword" she did do that, in her own way. Drogon is a literal extension of herself. She said "dracarys" which is the equivalent to her swinging a sword at them. Like how Sansa released hounds on Ramsey (no one has a problem with honour there). Like Jon and the hanging. He snapped the rope by swinging a sword. I feel like I'm going to be returning to him and that moment a LOT.
We really need to establish that Ned Stark's philosophies aren't always correct. If someone doesn't follow them to a tee, they're not immediately wrong. Ned literally got himself arrested by adhering to his philosophies - we're supposed to recognise that his way of living was deeply flawed, especially when dealing with people who weren't honourable. Just because someone isn't taking an active part in the death of those they accused, doesn't mean they're less of a person. Obviously, if you believe Ned's way is the best way, then yeah she's in the wrong. But then so is Sansa and so is Jon, for neither of them "swung the sword". Let's also add Tyrion to the list, since it was his idea for the killing of the masters before they left Mereen, but Grey Worm did the dirty work.

When i watched Dany executing them, i didn't know how to feel at first but then i thought about it a bit and it's clear. She did the right thing. Tarlys did the same thing to Tyrells like Boltons to Starks and no one would complain about how THEY ended up. Tyrells were their liege lord, they were loyal to them for centuries but turned on them and murdered them. The same thing happened with Boltons and Starks. Boltons supported Joffrey on the throne and Tarlys support Cersei. Betrayal like this deserves their execution no doubt. Daenerys was actually rather kind to them (in hindsight i would expect them all to be barbecued for what they've done without asking), she asked for their loyalty and so she spared the soldiers who knelt. Tarly refused, at that moment Dany seemed to be considering sending him to the wall but he told her no, she's not his queen. So she did the only thing left, she executed them. Dickon is an idiot but he chose this.
Also Daenerys can't go around and lock up every lord or soldier who doesn't agree with her and wait for them to change their minds. Winter is coming and she would soon be out of space.

Actually, the Tyrells royalled fucked the Tarlys more than once. In fact, the only Tyrells in power with a good mind in this generation were the Queen of Thorns and Margaery.
The Lord of the house, Mace Tyrell, was a brutish man who cared little for strategy or politics. He only cared for fame and power. In more than one occasion, he would steal the merits from his vassals, and there is no greater example of this than what he did to House Tarly in Robert's Rebellion.
Plus, ultimately, loyalty to the kingdom supersedes loyalty to individual houses. If your liege rises up in revolt against the crown, the house isn't obligated to follow them. The houses pledge loyalty to their liege, and their liege pledges loyalty to the crown. Before you sit on that high horse and talk about House Tarly "betrayal", do remind that the Tyrells:
      - Supported Ramsay over Stannis, the rightful heir to the throne, for political power.
      - Immediately changed their allegiance to the Lannisters when Remly died, for political power
      - Murdered their king with poison (If that isn't treason I don't know what is)
So things aren't as cut and dry as you are painting them out to be.
TL;DR The Tyrells put the Tarly's in an impossible position, after years of screwing them over. The Tyrells sided with Daenerys without a care for their vassals, who could not hide behind their great castle like the Tyrells could. They didn't ask for the advice or the opinion of their vassals. The Queen of Thorns made a decision based on anger and didn't care how that affected the people attached to house Tyrell, on top of murdering their king and betraying their kindgom. The Tyrells are the traitors.

@@stevem2323 Murdering leaders instead of reinstating them is the quickest way to fail a conquest and make sure your future rule is nice and full of rebellions. Shes doing the same thing she did in Mereen where she just started swinging her dick around instead of thinking about things for a split second. Take over, burn people and then what? What is she going to do? Does she have a plan as to who will replace the Tarlys for administration? No she just wants things her way and fuck what happens to the common people after, same as in Mereen where she had no idea what do do with the economy or the society after freeing the slaves leading to so much unnecessary death. Does she know anything about ruling that portion of westeros? No, nobody in her army does, atleast no one she can leave behind. By doing this you are only leaving hundreds, maybe thousands of people without their leaders and walking off to let them fend for their selves. All because she wanted two dudes to kneel DUE IMMEDIATELY after winning the battle. Thats why Tirion asked her to give them a chance to think it through. If you just saw your men, friends, probably family die horribly at the hands of some girl who showed up out of nowhere you are never going to kneel immediately after, specially if you're supposed to be leading whats left of these people. And then she has the nerve to talk about how benevolent she is and how shes different. She didn't just kill two Tarlys. In one move she wiped out an ancient house (which will culturally piss off every other great house killing her chances for getting further support), wiped out all the people in Horn Hill who are going to die in a succession debacle because she just offed their leaders and left, she wiped out all the people in the future who will fight her for what she did there if she manages to win the throne. She might be a bad ass conqueror but on the grand scheme of things shes a person who acts with no concept of consequence and genuinely doesn't care what happens after as long as she fucks shit up and feel good about herself. We spent season with her on Mereen so she learned how to rule and after all of that shes landing in westeros and making the same mistakes one for one. Let others figure out how to un-fuck shit up. You know who else did that, Robert Baratheon and Aerys Targaryen. She contradicted herself in the span of 3 sentences in her first time addressing westerosi people for crying out loud. Somehow 7 seasons in she is still the little girl with big dragons, bigger ego and no idea what shes doing. Shes not breaking the wheel, shes a discount copy of the wheel. Either do what you say or say what you do, you cant have it both ways or youre just making the truth be what you want it. You know who thought like that, Joffrey. She might not have the deep personality flaws of Robert, Aerys or Joffrey that made us dislike them in the show but on a fundamental level she is behaving like them. To be honest, I thought it was pretty strategic to burn someone alive in front of everyone else. Kill one rebel, in such a terrifying way, and the others would soon come to their sense about being brave. They'll choose living over dying. I think the one issue is that Dany didn't expect the son to also volunteer to die. It made the message seem cruel rather than practical.
You have to remember that the Tarlys are oath breakers who butcher all of the Tyrells with the Lannisters. Olenna told Dany to be a dragon. She's being a dragon. That doesn't stop at traitors, especially traitors who choose to incite rebellion - if she let that man live, the other soliders would follow suit. The dragon fire was a bit much though, in a political sense. She should've beheaded them, as its more Westerosi.
Dany is still acting no worse than Jon. Who, you know, hanged a 10 year old boy for treason. We saw that as Jon being tough and justified. Dany is killing a treasonous person. Just because it's by dragon fire doesn't make her worse than Jon. In fact, you could argue dragon fire is a much quicker death than hanging. Both are quite brutal ways to go.
She could have handled it a little differently, for sure, but the result should've been the same. We only think she's in the wrong because Tyrion is so torn. We're forgetting that Tyrion is not only incredibly biased, having witnessed the deaths of Lannisters, but also that he doesn't always give great advice. Like?? He's already lost her multiple allies. She's definitely listening to Olenna's advice in this scene (ESPECIALLY since these are the people that killed her).

    • @iloveyourunclebob
      @iloveyourunclebob 5 років тому +2

Honestly, she did it in a significantly more humane way than Aegon and his sisters did. They met the soldiers on a dry wheat field and didn't even bother attacking the soldiers with the dragons. They burned the wheat surrounding the soldiers and let the fire do the rest. I think it was around 1k burned alive and 10k left with horrendous burn wounds. Only the head of Lannister family was left of the 3 armies and he quickly knelt after that shit. Dany broke the line a couple of times and only attacked the carts. After only burned two people, giving them options at Tyrion's suggestion, and they chose death. They even highlight how little Dany used the dragons on the soldiers by Jamie freaking out at how the Dothraki slaughtered them all, while only talking about Drogon destroying the carts.
Plus, she now has Jon Snow and this Army of the Dead in the back of her mind possibly swaying her into taming her dragon (the metaphorical one inside of her) in case he is right because they will need as many soldiers as possible.
