      Like like the lyrics said, they(Wild Cherry) was a rock and roll band that did rock covers, but then gigs were becoming less and less because disco was taking over, so Wild Cherry had to adapt if they wanted to keep working and keep getting gigs, so Wild Cherry became a funk band. The song became a #1 hit with 2 Grammy nominations. To this day, “Play That Funky Music” is THE party song. The place goes crazy whenever this song is played.

    I was only 7 or 8 when this came out, EVERYONE young and old loved this song and couldn't sit still when it came on. Back in the day when there were only 3 tv channels, we listened to music on the radio all the time. There was so much cross pollination in music back then and a lot of album covers were art rather than pictures of the group. Most of the time you had no idea what the artists looked like until you saw them perform on Midnight Special, American Bandstand or Soul Train. Success was based strictly on the music, looks and race weren't a factor. There wasn't so much our music or their music, it was just music and the most popular radio stations played a wide variety of rock, pop, R&B etc. It was a great time.

      There is a strong argument that the 1970's were the best decade of music in modern history. There was something for everyone. Motown was still kicking, rock added Led Zeppelin and saw the advent of heavy metal with Black Sabbath. Folk rock continued, funk came to prominence, punk got its start with the Ramones, and for as much as people shit on disco, it was great dance music. From Sex Pistols to Soul Train, the '70s had it all.

    Not sure if anyone else has given you the background of how this song came about? Apparently they were playing in a club & after their set someone came up to the lead singer & said "you sure can play that funky music white boy"! It resonated with him & I believe it was later that night when he wrote the song. It's great that inspiration comes out of nowhere & can turn into a classic song like this!! You should check out Peter Framptons song "Do you feel like I do" from the Midnight Special, the same venue as Wild Cherry!! The Midnight Special was a great venue to see & hear ALL of the top talent of the 70's!! The GREATEST decade of music, because of the multiple genres of music played on the same radio station! There wasn't all of the "specific" channels that only played certain genres like there is today. Yes there was "rock stations" but those included a WIDE RANGE!! That's why the people who grew up during the 70's know a wide variety of songs & the lyrics whether it was rock, soul, Motown, ballets etc, they all were played on the same radio station.

    • @taiwanjohn
      @taiwanjohn 11 місяців тому +5

      In the version I've heard of this origin story, the guy in the audience shouted to the band as they were heading for the green room between sets... _"Hey, when are you white boys gonna play some FUNKY music?"_ Because, up to that point, they had just been playing their usual material, which was more conventional rock/blues stuff. So they wrote this song during the break, not knowing it was destined to become one of the most iconic party anthems of all time.
      By the way, I couldn't agree more on the influence of _"Midnight Special"_ and _"American Bandstand"_ and a handful of other shows, mostly on the weekends, which filled the role of MTV before it existed. Lots of great memories there! ;-)

    What makes this song great is that this literally everything Stevie Wonder wouldn't do musically during the same time period. Certainly one artist would endure over the other, but this is one of funk/rock/soul's g.o.a.t. tracks. PS. try some Stevie Wonder i.e. "Love's In Need Of Love Today", "Blame It On The Sun" and "I Believe (When I Fall In Love)".The funk/rock/soul landscape is so rich in artistry, it could take years to comb such fusion so enjoy the ride.......

    I was 13 when this came out and can remember a whole group of us breaking out and singing the chorus in the school auditorium waitng for some school meeting.
    Someone had a radio and the song came on and it just spread through the group.

    WHen I first heard this song back in the 70's I thought for sure the singer was black. Midnight Special was the blast back then. I was floored when I saw them on our Sony Trinitron color tv

    70's was so cool. We, all were one color till the tighty whites of the 80's took away the love. That was the industry. I was rappen early 70's tighty Whites and uptight blacks screwed the media up. It is love the one your with.

    5:05 trumpets actually have a little ring in the middle, attached to a slide, that minorly tweaks the pitch of certain notes. It's not painful to the trumpet twirler at all, even if it is a novel use of this ring.
