Hi diva! Professional over-thinker and gender studies enthusiast here. As we can tell from the parentheses, In Trousers (The Dream) is sort of dream/vision thing Marvin’s having. The whole thing is an abstract metaphor. It’s a neat ending to the musical; it wraps up several themes and kind of acts as a conclusion to Marvin's arc. First of all, let’s address the phrase ‘In Trousers’. In this show, wearing trousers is a metaphor for performing different gender roles. “In social interaction throughout [our] lives, [we] learn what is expected, see what is expected, act and react in expected ways, and thus simultaneously construct and maintain the gender order,” to quote Judith Lorber (1994). When one puts on the Trousers, one is behaving as they have been socialised to as per their gender. Trina is a woman, so in her Trousers she cooks and cleans. Marvin is a man, so in his Trousers he leads and dominates. Throughout the musical, Marvin’s point of view is unabashedly masculine. We can tell he has sympathy for the women in his life, since he finds himself thinking about what they must think and feel (I Am Wearing a Hat, My Highschool Sweetheart). We know he feels guilt for how he has treated the women in his life (ignoring them, projecting crass sexual fantasies on them, marrying and divorcing them), but he spends little time admitting his guilt; in fact, he spends the whole musical regressing in an attempt to run away from it. This changes in In Trousers (The Dream), where we see him apply a much more sympathetic point of view. The ladies he dreams about - Jessie, May, Bette and Sis - all do their best to be subservient and doting to their male counterparts. They try their hardest to be in Trousers, to perform hegemonic constructions of femininity. Reading Commonweal, wearing bonnets and sashes, politely laughing. They “give directions underneath on legs and knees” and “must, for love, remain discreet”, trying to mastermind picture-perfect facades and marriages. Marvin also notes how uncaring and cold the men are, sitting like vultures, objectifying their female counterparts, not contributing to their desperate attempts at harmony. They refuse to laugh at their jokes, to acknowledge their efforts. And, in a way, this is how they perform their masculinity. In their Trousers, they are strong and unemotional, they hold the power in all situations and refuse to compromise. They are ‘masculine’. These women thought they would “never lose their love”, as they have been socialised to believe that their marriages are built upon how well each partner performs their role. Since they are trying their hardest to be in Trousers, to be subservient wives, surely they will never lose their love! But as Marvin knows from his own marriage, this is untrue. Because, despite what the gender order has insisted for centuries, that’s just not how things work. I also love the highly meta line, “I write to keep the pain alive, but ask no questions”. Marvin admits he is aware his story and his actions are contributing to this harmful hegemony, but still, he does nothing to work against it. And the fact that there’s four ladies and five men, well, it means two of the men are queer and end up together. But only two of them - showing that these gender roles are harmful for _everyone_ , not just for gay men and for women. I hope that makes sense. And also this is just my interpretation! In Trousers is an innately abstract show so you can kinda interpret it however you like. :)
