For a guy who's been limited by an injury, you are sure getting a lot done! It's great to have a little help from friends, too.
Moved into my shop recently, sleeping on an army cot next to my fisher wood stove. Currently using a canton crane as a head board, and a Yates American Y36 snowflake watches over me while I sleep. Waking up and already being in my shop and seeing a new Keith Rucker video is a heck of a good time.
Can't beat a Fisher stove!
@ the one in the shop is a papa bear, and it is just a treat to use. Does its job quite well in these cold New Hampshire winters. Absolutely love sitting and listening to the air ripping through those draft/damper caps.
@@Spaceman_spliff I turned the draft bolts around so I could take the caps off. They'll roar then. We had a mama bear, folks had a papa bear and my ex had a coupl,e of Grandpaw bears. They all would hold fires overnight on spruce chunks from framing jobs. Just put on fresh and open the drafts and it's warm air time.
@@lewiemcneely9143 a family of bears for a family of people! That’s a good idea regarding the draft caps. Given I’m 28 years of age, this stove should last through the rest of my life, and that’s just fantastic.
@@Spaceman_spliff I've seen them go through house fires and all you need to do is wirebrush the rust off them, slap on paint and OFF YOU GO again! Maybe restack a firebrick or 2. Some of the draft bolts are spot welded but a grinder can fix that but they'll work fine either way.
That's a handy upgrade. Many thanks to your friend for lending a hand while you heal up.
Now get one for the gantry. Watching you pull those chains makes me nuts.
While I sort of agree, and I have thought the same at times, there is a problem. The gantry moves around all over the shop. And Keith may not want to worry about having to plug it in. Chains need only muscle power.
@@wuudturner How about a hoist designed to use a fork-lift battery. "Watching you pull those chains makes me nuts." Me, too! So painfully slow for Keith.
love that both mics are working
Your assistant is looking like Bono of U2 fame with those safety glasses.
nice upgrade & a great helper
Very uplifting show.
😂
Yes i got hooked on this show.
It's amazing the broad range of knowledge that we end up with when we dive down the world of machine shop life.
Your shop is well equipped!
Nice addition! Constant improvements.
Good morning Keith, nice always having a extra hand to help out.
Nice upgrade with the electric hoist.
Certainly going to be a great asset to the shop.
Thanks for sharing. 👍🇺🇸👍
Handy tip, (works for all machinery actually) remove fill plug first, you dont want an empty sump if you cant get the fill plug out.
An electric hoist on your blue mobile gantry crane would be great too. I know a guy that repurposed an atv winch on his. Runs it off a 12v car battery
Harbor Freight, Amazon, and others sell electric hoists of different capacities for lifting for around a $150 bucks
After just checking Amazon for verification, they have a 110 volt, 2200 lb, 3 way hoist with 38 feet of cable for just under $150.00. It has a handle on it so it can be used for pulling also and it comes with a wired or wireless controller. That could be handy if you’re moving something heavy around the shop or trying to get that something loaded onto your truck or trailer. I might have to grab one of these to have around the shop, I’m getting to old to be dragging stuff anymore. Lol
Edited for misspelled words.
Really glad you hand is doing much better Keith + nice upgrade for your shop......Thank you Keith & Keith......
Old Shoe🇺🇸
Just when I think your shop couldn't get much nicer!
So relaxing to watch!
Good to see a good old hoist coming back to life instead of heading to Harbor Fright.
Getting automated. Fancy!😀
Glad to see your new Retirement Hairstyle. I've been retired for 15 years now, and it has sure been nice to look and act the way I want to. Now I let my beard and hair look natural. I dressed for success for 30 years. As well it is always great to see your young friend helping. He is the future of our skills.
A wonderfully useful addition!
Good morning Keith from Lincolnshire UK 🇬🇧
Sold many Budgit hoists back in my Sales Engineer days in the mill and industrial supply business! The electric ones work fine but most of my customers preferred air hoists for finer control when spotting loads. Really just a matter of personal preference. In your case getting a good deal on a used electric one beats the snot out of buying a new air hoist!
That is a nice improvement. Thank you for another Great video. Cheers
Great addition to the jig crane. Thanks for sharing.
Another great video Keith and God bless you
A word of mild disagreement, this episode was two abbreviated 18:34
Keith might have decided against showing any work going on with someone in the bucket (or whatever) of his skid steer. There’s no sense in providing video proof to any osha types out there. Lol Good video, and I agree, I like them a little longer or at least show all that it takes to complete a job like this.
Very nice upgrade!
Congratulations!
Nice addition to the shop.
Years ago my wife. and I were looking at a house with an "RV garage", or that's how it was listed. Turned out the door wasn't wide enough for the trailer thru. But the kicker was the 2 1/5 ton Jib Crane inside and 5 220vt plugs . This guy didn't build an RV garage but a machine shop. The Realtor said "If you don't want that, just sell on Craigs List". Ha.
Those are very nice hoists.
Good morning keith! Nice upgrade. Have a great week!
It’s about time Keith. I’m glad you finally got it to save your effort.
A very uplifting video
A much needed assist to the lathes , and to your back !LOL
Way to go Keith(s)
14:00 the mounting hook lost its catch. It would be advisable to add one. Because this isn't an industrial use machine, adding a simple piece of thick wire will suffice. That said, beware of jumping loads, that would potentially cause this (as is) to unhook. Have seen this happen once with a snapped chain, and the whole crane fell on the ground (it was a cheapy one that didn't have any kind of safety for the hook to begin with). So be aware of that.
@aserta it actually can't unhook. I had to disassemble the beam trolley to be able to install the hook onto the load pin. The load pin has a reduced diameter section where the hook sits and can't be removed while the trolley is assembled.
Happy Wednesday Keith! 😊
Thanks for sharing another great video Keith. That electric hoist will sure come in handy. You need to get Keith outfitted with a Vintage Machinery Shop Apron. He is out of uniform for these videos. LOL
Thank you Keith!
Thanks Keith
Thanks again, Keith.
I hang, repaired, and run PM on many of those things years ago, in the hottest and coldest weather. I used to work for one of the largest railcar manufacturers in the US, and jibs were hanging everywhere. I was young, then, but wouldn't want to try it now.
I used to do all kinds of things when I was young and dumb that I wouldn't try now that I'm old and dumb.
you've been needing this. now you need to rig one like it onto your rolling gantry thingy.
0:13 - That Keith is fortunate to have the other Keith as a mentor. At age 13 or 14, I had a neighbor who was a 'model engineer', building (at the time) a 3-1/4" gauge live steam Altantic and who allowed a punk kid to watch what he did and learn.
0:54 - You're a young man, enjoy it.
7:37 - Not at all interested in electrical issues; that phone over there gets someone here who does.
10:52 - Interested again.
I was wondering how long it would be before you would replace the old chain fall with an electric winch. Looks good. I am glad to hear your hand is getting better. thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
When we merged with another company, they had electric hoists. We purposely had hand operated hoist. Within the first week we had an operator removing an injection mold from one of the molding machines and had the entire machine floating in the air being held by the eyebolts in the mold he was trying to take out of the molding machine. The push of the electrical button is not the same feel as the chain drive on the hoist.
Since someone might have had their fingers in it over the years... check the chain, and make sure the weld is OUT, away from the drive sprocket.
I was a parts and service guy at JET equipment going back 35 years ago - sold many a sprocket to replace the chewed up one!
That jib crane is rated for 2k pounds at the tip. Halfway out it should be good for roughly 4k. That's why it had a heavier than 2k chain hoist on it.
Thank you for sharing. Nice.👍
Thank you!!!
Had the same unit in my old shop. Put a bungee cord onto the cord, holds it up but lets to still pull it down for use. I got real tired of running into the controls hanging there.
I was wondering when you would get to this.
Good content as always and a good purchase for the workshop but after using an electric hoist it's damn hard to go back to a manual one!
Slipped on the ice, in South Georgia, weird weather year.
What really weird is according to a video the loss of arctic ice weakens the polar vortex that usually keeps that cold air bottled up North. So it’s lack of polar vortex. All I know is one time it was -57 in Chicago with the wind chill so they said don’t come into the office. I can’t imagine walking the 10 min from the train the way the wind pulls down those streets.
@@timprussell Who would want to walk anywhere in that hell hole?
@ it was a couple of days of freak cold.
I hope you have better luck with that hoist; I scrapped mine last week, because they didn't support it with parts, I bought a vendor. Bummed I couldn't justify us made..
Perhaps it had a 1-1/2 ton winch because, although the beam can only handle 1 ton with the load all the way out at the end, it can safely lift 1-1/2 ton if the load is closer to the upright.
👍👍👍👍
Nice! Just a thought, maybe mount a 'holster' for your controller on the post so that it doesn't dangle when not in use?
I’ve heard a lot of the other machine shop makers claim they’re sticking with manual chain falls because it gives them “better control”.
May be true of the older cheaper “Harbor Fright” electrics, but you have an industrial quality unit.
Can you put a tarp strap or bungee cord on your drop cord so your controller will be above above head high yet easy to reach?
handy!
Nice, work smarter not harder.
I wonder how many more projects you would have completed if you would have had that winch sooner !
I thought Snap-On spanners were available all over the US but the de-fault seems to be an shifting spanner...lol
Hi mate trevor I'm out in Australia and we are trying to get daming material can't get it in Australia
Hello Keith. Great stuff. Does halving the voltage from 480 to 240v decrease the lifting capacity (by half)?
The lifting capacity remains the same on either voltage, the reason it was wired for the higher voltage was for the advantage of lower operating cost. Kieth won’t be using the hoist so much that it would affect his electric bill that much
It just doubles the amps required
I hate manual chain hoists. Although on mine, I painted the up chain orange and the down chain green, It helped a lot.🤣
Hopefully you gave the FNG a run for his money!
Nice upgrade. Great help
If the original use of the 3 phase motor on that crane was wired in Delta (vs Y), it wouldn't have had a ground. If it was wired in Y, it would have had a separate ground.
❤️🔥
That's one (the lesser one) out of two electric hoists you need, in my ADHD opinion.
I have a PDF of the manual for this hoist. I’ll upload it.
The crane beams if properly installed it supposed to be grounded. So, no need to ground the winch.
In Canada we have 575 volts only 3 leads
Delta or star ? Motor wiring .
@ that would depend on the horsepower of the motor, we call it wye or delta, wye is more common in Small motors
@dundasjunctionmodelr.r-jam8267
Yup no need for a neutral. Those little pump motor fail ,it can be quite the light show. No need to wonder which motor failed😆⚡️💥
@ neutral not used for 3 phase motors in Canada
Sorry but when i saw at 5:55 your drawing the left side looked like a star config witch is for higher voltage and the right looked to triangle witch is for higher current=less voltage. But maybe i missread your way of drawing (without drawn coils). Anyhow thx for your videos.
A motor starting under load is usually wye wound and a delta wound motor is usually meant for no load starting. A winch is expected to start under load so it should be wye wound, at low or high voltage.
@millwrightrick1 Yes totaly agree. But as i interprete he now drives with lower voltage in star.... But i think i missinterprete his drawing.
Have to change name to Not So-Vintage Machinery hahahah
I would leave the pendant the way it is. It will be too high if you are bent over picking something from the ground.
Why is it in German and I can't change it in the settings?
it looks like the hoist was factory installed
Massive overkill to have that huge jib crane just to lift parts onto the lathe maybe a few times a year. An electric pallet stacker would do the same job and could move around the entire shop to service all the machines as well as bringing parts in from the outside.
240 volts = low voltage? Must be a power tool. 😁
OSHA says 600v and less is low voltage, that motor like all multi voltage is just labeled that way for reference. but most just say 240v 277v or 480v some older say 460v
a BUDGET hoist u will or may be standing under - hahah
2000 lbs
1 short ton
0.89 long ton
0.9 metric ton
900 kg
142.857 stone
1903 US pint
1584.5 UK pint
It totally confuses me!
Keith your sound production on your videos are getting worse.
Due to deafness I have to use headphones, which works exceptionally well, untill I try to watch your channel where I have to turn on the subtitles, this detracts from viewing pleasure having to read instead of watching the video.
Please upgrade your sound or seek professional help.
America is so complicated. UK, 3 phase 415v. single phase 240v. thats it
Well "complicated" United States put men on the moon, created GPS, and is heading for Mars, what has UK done lately?
@@garybrenner6236 nice! lol
UK is still complicated.
Ring wiring instead of star wiring so you have to put fuses in your 240v plugs?
Also 3 prongs? What if you want to turn the plug around for better cable management?
I'm not quite a fan of your abbreviated version today, I rather like longer versions myself. Thanks for the episode, though. 19:00
He's still avoiding that Stoker Engine ever since he pinched that hand!
I prefer the shorter versions because my tummy starts hurting from laughing at Bozo!
You need a cow Keith, you know, to keep milking it
A Little Less Talk and A Lot More Action!
Wish Shitube would hurry up and add Stable Volume option to all channels/videos already, I can barely hear anything of Keith's videos using their absolute shit YT mobile browser extension.
It looks like a death trap, that hook on the top will pop off if the load shifts or chain pops and the whole thing will fall on someone.
It's not that bad, yes it would be better to just add a piece of steel wire but it's not going to magically going to fall off.
The whole jib crane would tip over before that happens.
Your ground/earth is connected through a painted surface which ain't good.
Your videos need more volume.
Kieth, that SO wire is junk. It'll be cracked and useless in five years. Why it's even made, let alone sold, any more is beyond me. Buy a camper extension cord that has a plastic type insulation on all conductirs and the outside cover. It'll last forever, certainly for your lifetime. It's difficult to find the wire in free lengths, but the trailer shops sometimes have it available. Otherwise, a premade cable is the way to go. Just cut the ends off. I believe it's classified as SOJT, but DON'T quote me on that.
