    Love your reviews man, keep them coming. It's awesome that you read your subscriber comments and really work to get comparison requests done in order to help people decide. Funny thing is, I was waiting for this comparison but got impatient and purchased the Audeze Penrose yesterday. You just confirmed I made the right choice for me. For me, sound is mostly what I care about. Comfort is important, but I'm one of the lucky few that has a head shape and small ears that work with most headphones. It's rare I find a headphone that's uncomfortable, and that includes the stock Penrose. I wore them 5 hours yesterday with no issue. The features are nice, but in the end, my main joy comes from how well the headset sounds when I'm actually using it. Does it give me goosebumps when playing games. The Penrose nails this. I actually have a SoundBlaster G6 and Beyerdynamic DT 700 Pro X as well, and the Penrose more than holds it's own against that combo. That speaks volumes considering the fact that it's wireless. Yeah if you need the features of the Arctis Nova headsets I can see the appeal, but me, I have other wireless ANC headphones so that's not important for me in a gaming headset, and I spend most of my time actually using the headset than playing with features, so give me the best sound. Thanks again man for your reviews.

    Audeze Penrose vs. Steelseries Nova Pro Wireless? That's definitely a hard decision. I think it boils down to this. If you want the best sound in a wireless gaming headset and are willing to sacrifice feature set - go with Audeze Penrose hands down. If you want the best feature set at the expense of having the best sound (but still good) then go with Arctis Nova Pro. It's a shame that Audeze got things so wrong with the feature set because with that, they would have had the best gaming headset on the market hands down, no questions asked. As a Penrose owner, when the Nova Pro dropped, I was considering switching over to get the user experience that Penrose so sorely lacks but now I'm not sure if I want to give up that sound quality. I have a love-hate relationship with this headset lol

      This is pretty much me, too. I'm considering returning my Novas, because they really don't seem like a straight up upgrade. I do have my issues with the Penrose X, mainly the very occasional connection drop, but that's very occasional. The Bluetooth works how I need it to so no complaints there. After using the Novas for a week, I can say the sound is definitely very good but not Penrose quality. The connection is solid, so that's a plus, but that's the only plus. Comfort is slightly under the Penrose because I have the Penrose modded. The Bluetooth works the same, so no change there. I use an external mic with I use Discord, so mics mean nothing to me so no change there, and while the Novas have superior battery life, I don't run my Penrose dry every day and charge it at night. The noise cancelling is a perk but I do hear the sound degradation when it's on. It's slight but there. So that feature is very hit and miss if I'll ever use it. So the extra Nova really doesn't come into much play for me, so I'm left with the same conclusion above: which is the best pure gaming headset. For my situation, it's the Penrose. It does what I need it to, feels good after modding, and sounds way better (the Nova's bass did bottom out during the final boss of Destiny 2's new dungeon, on the Smiley preset). That's my current general take, which is why I'm thinking I'll get my $350 back and just hold out to see if the Penrose gets refreshed or dies.

    • @danishkaka87
      @danishkaka87 2 роки тому +2

      @@gigolocalypsetv5520 That's a great background, thanks for sharing your experience! My issues with the Penrose also extend to the build quality. Despite taking such good care of the headset, the right sideband has cracked and I have it reinforced with zip ties. And this is my SECOND pair after the first pair had the exact same issue with the left band and I sent those in, which Audeze replaced. Very disappointing to be frank for a $300 product. That being said, I have my headset modded with Wicked Cushions so any previous slight comfort issues have been solved.
      I also watched GadgetryTech's review of the Nova Pro and while he similarly had good things to say, he said that he was using the Nova Pros more than the Penrose probably because of the well rounded feature set. But frankly, I'm my priority for audio just takes precedent over features. I had the much older Arctis 7 as my first gaming headset when I first built my PC but since then dabbled into higher res audio with Philips Audio Fidelio X2HR and then Hifiman Sundara and knew that I wanted a gaming headset with that quality of sound. And at the time, the Penrose was the only one that was going to do that in a wireless format for a reasonable price. So, it's just hard to drop now. I am also keeping an eye on the new EPOS H3PRO Hybrid but I think even those will have their limitations and won't be beating the Penrose. So just have to wait for a refreshed Penrose (if that ever happens).

    My artics pro wireless broke where you mention. And I am really gentle and careful with my items. Never even used them outside my house.
    They broke simply from me grabbing one earcup, and pushing it slightly forward off my ear to be able to hear people and talk to them. And not even that often really, it just wore down over time until it broke. It really felt like cheap plastic, and I wouldnt have had that problem if they had a bit more flexibility to swivel.

    The longer I've had my Penrose X the more disinchanted I'm with it. I did your ear cushions mod and it worked beautifully, they are "stinking cozy!". Over time the battery life is not great, maybe 10-12 hours for mine with no use of Bluetooth and wireless at the same time. Then they have days where they disconnect constantly. I've done all the trouble shooting and can't find out why. The sound is hands down the only reason I've held on to them. I got the steel series nova pro wireless last night. While the sound was no as good it was not bad and I loved the rest including the fact! I think they may dethrone the Penrose X for me!

  • @simonbrandy9662
    @simonbrandy9662 2 роки тому +5

    There's one major flaw with the Penrose X & that's down to the flimsy planar magnetic drivers. I had two headsets before I gave up & returned for good. Partly because of the excessive clamping force, it can create an airtight seal which when you remove the headset can damage the planar drivers. Once damaged, it's game over! The headset would make a crinkled foil noise in the ear cup, even with the headset switched off. I've seen this fault reported by numerous owners of the penrose. I believe it is a serious design flaw & for that reason I will be avoiding Audeze products until they can better protect their planar magnetic drivers.
    I agree the sound is incredible, but if you come across the fault I mentioned, they're ruined. Be warned!
    I recently bought the Nova Pro wireless & I'm very impressed so far. The spatial audio is superior to the Penrose, whereas the Penrose have a slightly more detailed sound stage. It is hard to fault the audio with the Penrose, aside from the bass which lacked a punch. Hopefully there are no design issues with the Nova Pro.

    I've been using the Penrose X for the past year and today played with the Nova pro wireless for about 3 hours and honestly... The Nova rocks! Sure the Penrose can blow out your eardrums, but do you ever set it to that volume? The sound is great but to me the Nova with the 40mm drivers don't hold back. I was playing apex on pc with the apex preset in Sonar and could hear fights across the map where my wife had no idea they were even going on using the Penrose. And comfort.... The nova wins hands down! Both our Penrose's also started cracking roughly the same time at weak points with no way to fix or replace unless you send it back to Audeze and pay the shipping...

I think it's the right side but I'm not 100% sure. Have all that before you send the email to Audeze and let them know. You also might need the receipt to verify the date of when you bought them. SteelSeries Wireless is an easy win for me because of the "user experience" Swappable batteries, able to switch easily from console and PC and use Bluetooth devices at the same time. Easily able to see when your mic is muted. Great range. I personally take all those things over the sound quality difference. You're still gonna be able to hear every footstep in game which is the most important part. I've owned many headsets throughout the years that have better sound quality than SteelSeries but always go back because of the quality of life features.

I prefer the Penrose over the Corsair Virtuoso XT even with all these complaints just because of the sound quality and the working Bluetooth. I have both wireless headsets and the Nova Pro's give me way more positional awareness (overal sound stage/spacial audio). The Penrose X has cannons for speakers, they get loud for sure but I've never felt like they gave me pin point accuracy or where about targeting enemies (kinda weak spacial audio wise). I do love them for single player games though.
    With the Nova Pro's playing Apex Legends, I can now hear stuff happening across the map it feels. Something I don't get with the Penrose X.
    My son couldn't believe how I was targeting fights that were happening so far away when we were looking for action to get into.The positional accuracy is just next level with the Nova Pro.
    I love the Penrose X for overall immersion but for FPS, the Nova Pro's are hands down better (imo). The ability to point out multiple sounds going on at the same time is just crazy to me. It just has a much wider spacial audio sound stage in differentiating enemies whereabouts. I even started noticing lots of little noises that I believe just got overpowerd by the Penrose X.
    Can't go wrong with either but as a FPS looking for the best directional awareness, definitely pay $50 more for the Nova Pro's.

Even if they had to raise the price alittle more to get that and all the wireless features. I believe I can buy the DAC separate right ? And that should work. But kinda feels like it defeats the purpose of wireless then. Not to mention more money.

      @@relltakal3706 Novas on Flat sound good but you can customize your eq also. But just on their flat, for FPS (mostly Apex on Xbox) I hear so much more stuff around me.
      The Penrose X have amazing sound but I think it's all so loud that it jumbled together.
      With the Nova Pro's I can place what's where so much better better. I can hear footsteps from way further away. It's kind of crazy to me.
      I love both headsets just for different things. If you care more about FPS (on console anyways) the Nova Pro's have a wider sound stage (as far as picking out footsteps and environmental sounds).
      I don't think they get as loud as the PenroseX but I'm starting to wonder if too loud is the cause of losing wide sound stage? That I'm not sure, but all I know is I try them back to back and it's just not even close of how much more I hear around me with the Nova Pro's compared to the PenroseX. I have seen a few other big channel reviewers mention that as great of the PenroseX are, they struggle a bit with wide range sound stage. After comparing the 2 together, the Nova Pro's are definitely more geared towards the ESports competitive crowd, where as the PenroseX are amazing for single player type games. They do provide great immersion.

    Lucky for me I have both so I don’t have to choose! I like the sound of the Penrose X, but it’s such a pain to make any adjustments outside of volume and mic levels. The controls on the Penrose are the worst I’ve ever dealt with. Out of the box, the Nova Wireless aren’t great, but once you get your EQ settings dialed in…they make the Penrose sound thin and cheap. I think the Nova’s are a better investment and overall a better experience. The Penrose are for people who don’t like to mess with any settings and just turn it on and game. Oh. The Penrose wireless range and battery life is pretty terrible as well. The Penrose are the first headset I’ve had die on me during a gaming session…and I constantly charge my stuff. The Nova Pro Wireless has insane battery life…AND you get 2 batteries. So yeah, you’re covered with the Nova Pro’s.

    What dissapoints me most about the Nova range is that it seems the DACs/Transceivers is mostly just for show and a fancy volume wheel, most of the magic requires you to install the Steelseries app to get the full feature lists so for console gaming youre not getting a lot of headset for your money.

    Really excited for this vid and it didn't disappoint! Yeah, I'm gonna spend the weekend tossing each on and off, and making a some decisions. I kinda already feel I know where I'm leaning but I just don't want to shortchange myself. I went in knowing the Wireless Pro had a steep hill to climb, in sound. And yeah, it does fall to the Penrose. My issue with the Penrose has always been wireless performance and some Bluetooth issues. Comfort was paid into, with your mods, so I already have the Penrose in a cozy place vs the Nova. ATM, the I can say the Nova does perform better for both connections. It is rock solid with the 2.4, and I feel the Bluetooth is a lil sturdier...just a lil. There are some of the same issues that actually ended up being general headset issues, but the Nova does function better with my phone. I usually sync up to my laptop, though, and both seem even there and I use an USB mic anyways so I really didn't improve there. It's pretty coming down to the general connection performance vs the best sound. The Nova Wireless definitely isn't garbage, but in wireless vs wireless (I require wireless for my living situation) the Penrose just destroys everything. So I guess we'll see if performance still keeps it on top, or if I can live with the connection issues, though very minimal, and just stick with the sound king. All in all, if you own the Penrose, have it modded, found that connection sweet spot that gives you know drops, and Bluetooth is really the only feature that matters and it works well enough, then the Nova probably won't be considered an upgrade at all. I think that's where I may end up, by the end of the weekend and Best Buy may get a headset back

    I play only on Playstation 5 and do not care about wireless (even wired headphones would work better for me). Which choice would be better in terms of audio quality (bass, loudness,, details).
    I'm strongly considering Penrose or wired Nova Pro, but maybe another choice would be better (if we're talking about wired headphones). I don't care about the quality of the microphone. I will be very grateful for your help because there is too much choice and it is already driving me crazy :P

    I only ask because my personal taste with tech is having a jack of all trades’ device when I can find that option. I don’t doubt that the Penrose has them beat purely in the sound department but if you could only have one set to use for everything (gaming, listening to music, commuting) which would it be? 🤔

      Probably the nova pro, I got the penrose and the volume dial controls any volume coming in the headset, such as Bluetooth, party chat volume, and game volume, which is really annoying because then you have to plug it in to a pc to change what you want to hear more. The nova pro wins in ease of use. Personally I like hearing a different balance between game sound and party chat volume when I play different games and it would be annoying to plug it into my pc every time I get on a different game.
