I have Guinea pigs, they do get sick not as often snd some can go through life and never get sick until much later in life and I do freak out each and every time they get sick , they are fragile and can go down hill very fast
I would love to have rats at least ones but now I’m not sure 😀

Let me tell you i paid about 2500€ for me six rats on vet and funeral bills i don't reget a single cent. I just wish they would have a longer lifespan. First year is all fun and adventurous but once the get around 1½ years the bad times beginns.. cancer is such a shit show

Where would you recommend to get rats from?
A breeder, rescue or reptile store that sells PET rats ?

My reply might have disappeared, so if there’s two replies, I apologize. I recommend a rescue first and foremost. A reputable breeder would be second, as finding a good one can be difficult.

@@hallofrats703 I agree, but one time, a baby rat was being given away in a pet store, as a feeder rat. He had been bitten in the face. I wondered if someone had tried to feed him to a rat. I took him, took him to a vet, they gave him something for pain, but said his one eye was too far gone. He would never let anyone touch him. Bit me a couple of times, but I respected his need to protect himself. He was smart enough to know he would never be hurt again. I would tell him to go upstairs in the cage, when I cleaned it, and I fed him decent food. He grew up to be a really big hooded rat. A handsome guy, but you could see the scars on his face. I was glad I took him home!

If you don’t mind me asking , how can you afford vet bills for that many rats?
I live in California and after basic diagnosis with blood work and XRay I usually spend at least $500
Surgeries are insanely pricey and go from $1200+

Surgeries are definitely the most expensive, but my vet doesn’t do bloodwork on rats, as they’re so small and they don’t typically do x-rays either, as they just aren’t very useful with rats. So, finding a knowledgeable vet with fair pricing and squirreling away everything I can works for me.

Your amazing and such a devoted pet owner thank you for all the info, i have 3 girl dombo rats. Silvia who is 2 Years. Cookies her sister passed away just before xmas.. now have 2 more little girls Settling in over last 5 weeks.. I have put their cages Next to each other now and all seem very happy sniffing each other threw the bars. Just wanted to ask your advise.... I would Like Silvia to be in with the 2 little ones but im wondering if it would be to stressful at her age.

I would highly recommend trying intros! At her age, the stress of being alone would be much more of a concern than intros.
