One of the best tutorials I have seen. Much appreciated. 👍
Wow, thanks!
I wished I'd learn this when I was a kid! I'm 61 and just now learning these knots. I've driven a truck for 31 years and didn't even know what a truckers hitch was until last year.
Some of the shortest ,clearest and best illustrations I have seen. Thanks. Martin. U.K.
I really appreciate the included captions, illustrations, and the clear, concise, thoughtful, and calm way you presented this. Thank you, this is super helpful!
Amazing how useful knots can be. This vid is a good refresher, and great for novices. Thank you sir.
You’re very welcome thanks for watching!
Thank you, you are the best knot teacher ever!
I can't say anything that hasn't already been said except, You da man !
Thank you so much for what ought and should be taught in schools (US). Wish I'd had this knowledge 40 years ago. Easy, concise, beautifully done. Thank you, thank you.
Thankfully these skills are still taught to some degree in Scouts BSA. Would love to see more kids in the program…and the outdoors for that matter. .
@@kgflicks True, but large masses of us should know these thus school systems. Cub Scout Pack 190 here back in the day ... When dirt was invented. 🙄🤣 PS - They ought to be taught to full degree also!
Great explanation of these two knots. I knew Taut, but not Prussik...everyone else over complicated it. nice video
Hey Ralph, thanks a bunch.
I’m glad you found it helpful man!
simple yet effective! thanks!
Clear and concise! Thank you!
Just tried the taught line knot for the first time, amazing and so simple. Will definitely be a go to next time i go camping, thank you!
what a compact video of all the essential knots! GEM!
Thank you! Really great instruction and easy to follow.
Thanks for a great demo. I’m trying to learn my knots now, way later in life than I should be.
Thanks for the simplicity of the lesson, I thoroughly enjoy your videos
You’re very welcome Joe thanks so much for writing and watching!
I like it! Simple and effective!
Simple easy awesome! Thanks buddy !
Such a simple but effective way of passing on your knowledge. Thanks 👍🏼
Best hiking trip video I have seen in a long time, thank you 👍🏕️
one of the best and easiest videos on tarp setup ive seen very nice
Liked. Downloaded. Shared. Thank you.
Excellent!
Thanks the simplest explanation I’ve ever watched.
This is superb. As someone who is just now getting into this stuff, I can say this is what I've been looking for.
Thanks Brad! Anything else you’d like to see ?
@@TheBearEssentials Some things I have on my mind are what to do in cold weather and rainy weather, probably with a focus on staying warm and dry while sleeping. Which tent to pack according to weather or other factors. Tips on loading a pack, including attaching things to the outside if needed. How to avoid waking up with a snake in your sleeping bag. First aid. Clothing choices for all weather conditions. Applications for various knots. And whatever else you can think of that is useful. Thanks!
I am a health and safety instructor myself and your style is similar to mine. Calm, collective and composed. I found this video very useful. Thank you very much.
Wow thanks so much, means a bunch coming from you!
the taught line hitch awesome for tarp setups! Makes fine tuning your setup so easy. Especially handy when you gotta do a hasty change to adjust for changing rain or wind conditions.
Check out the Klemheist...
Knots explained very well. Thanks.
Great video, really awesome tutorial. I’m going away to wood cabin in Wales with the family this week and I’m taking my tarp and a hammock to play around with for the first time in Ernest. I have some new pegs and para chord arriving today and I’ll be practising using the knots you’ve shown us here. Thanks!
Really nice.
I never like how to videos or save them, but this is the best I've ever seen. Very well done
LOVE your knot videos on the camping subreddit. Im camping for the first time this season in NL this week and watching your videos before heading out!
Thanks a bunch!!
Newfoundland? Amazing!! That’s a great place to camp. Have fun! And check back in letting me know how it went
This is super helpful. Thank you!
Concise, simple to remember 👍🏻❤👍🏻
You know this is so great. I’m just preparing to break my camping virginity. I’m 58 and disabled and finally now able to start camping due to some medical advancements. Watching your video tutorials really helps. I’m practicing setting up a small tarp in the garden. Can you recommend good a tarp size measurement for a spacious area to sit and store items for say two people please? Many thanks Ian
Wow that’s incredible that you can finally start camping!! I’m really happy for you.
I like a 10x13 tarp myself. It’s spacious enough for two people under there when it rains.
Thanks for commenting Ian, I’d love to hear about your trip!
That was great! I'm just starting out using tarps as an addition to my camping & I watched & copied with shoe laces
Brilliant
Really easy to follow the sequence and process for setup. Thanks for the demonstration, I'll definitely be using this next time I'm out in the woods.
Great instructions. Thanks! I'll be working on mine this weekend 👍
I’ve learned so many new good ideas about hammock camping. I definitely need to set up my tarp like this to make like easier.
Thanks for your tip!!
I am enjoying this channel so much.
I have to say, the fact that you put the work in to add subtitles to your videos is huge! I've been thinking about starting my own channel and always considered doing exactly that. Good on ya, brother. :)
Well, if you do that, do a better job with your spelling and grammar! It's "I'm," not "im" and he's not using "steaks," he's using "stakes." Just a couple of examples of the mistakes that were driving me crazy while I was watching this.
Very nice 👍😊
Good job! Thanks for the tutorial. Sometime I throw another loop on the taut line hitch.
Really good. Thanks! I'm heading out to hike the CDT with a 10 X 10 sinylon tarp this April 2023.
Great video! Saving it to remind me when needed. Thanks!
Awesome!!
Really well done. The perfect tarp set up. We've used this approach many times. Great over a picnic table so you can slide it back and forth depending on sun and rain.
Very well explained 👌
Great tutorial! Thank you!
Brilliant ! Thank you.
Great tutorial. Thanks mate.
Thanks: great video!
I love this channel, thanks so much for your content!
Glad you enjoy it! Thx for the nice comment!
Спасибо. Всё и просто и гениально.
so helpful.
I hate knots, but you made them bearable.
So easy to grasp and great video, thanks! - Now, will go out and tarp-try! :)
Mean video; cheers brother!
Спасибо . Все толково , по делу ,без лишних слов . Удачи. Возможно я не первый ваш зритель и подписчик из России , но даже мне сибиряку и геологу с большим полевым стажем ( более 25-ти лет ) интересно Вас смотреть.
Amazing. Clear. Concise. So well explained for anyone looking to start using tarp shelters.
What knot do you use to connect your corner lines to the tarp?
Thanks again for the tips. I didn't know the taut line knot
You are so welcome!
Amazing. 🎉
Just found you! I appreciate your instructions, they were very easy to follow and remember. New follower
Great video. Thank you for sharing.
You’re very welcome, thanks for watching!
subscribiing because it's so informational!
thank you
line function indexed by color?..
absolutely brilliant
Good one thanks 👍
Why wasn't I taught this in school? Thank you sooooo much for making this easy to follow! I've spent the last few years of my life just pegging out tarps with three wildly inappropiate knots that were the only ones I knew plus whatever random crap came to mind. Can't wait to try some of these out over the weekend :)
This is very useful as I need a setup like this for temporary cover. The things you drive into the ground are stakes and not steaks, that are pieces of a cow!
Video on top 10 ESSENTIAL knots! (easy tutorial)

Bungee cords work well
This is a great informative enjoyable easy video; One thing: I initially did the reef knot straight up, then started confusing myself when repeating to myself 'right over left' : I'd describe it as "Left over right, then Left under right" That way I no mixed up - perhaps I'm just wired weirdly🤪 So excited about the Taut line hitch, and Prussik...thanks I just want to set up coverage for an outdoor party ;-)
this is the greatest vid. of useing 2 knots for tarps i've seen. (a lot of commenters think so) i have been wanting to know what knots to use for tarp set up for some time (yes looked at other vids) and went to an rei event to learn, but this help more then all the rest (maybe i'm a slow learner and need the 15 times being shown person) good job there amigo. still learning after all these years.
What other videos did you watch? AND an REI demonstration? Do you have a TBI or something? These same knots are in every video that doesn't use a bowline + trucker's hitch instead for the ridgeline. You're not paying attention.
Great content, thanks 😊
My pleasure!!
Just got my tarp with this easy set up and this video is perfect! How long was the piece of rope you used to create the prusik knot?
Hey that’s fantastic, about 12” I’d say. Loop comes out just less than 6” diameter
@@TheBearEssentials Thank you for the quick response kind sir! Very helpful information. Stay safe!
Excellent! 😊
Thank you!!
👍🏾 Thanks!
Very cool, i use a few knots but the Totline hitch is going to be incorporated more often and I'm going to bring a little extra cordage For my Tarp system and just leave the cord attached to the grommets use a rubber band or hair tie, something, maybe little velcro straps to keep the cords in a nice bundles
What about putting your ridge line UNDER your tarp? You lose the middle guyout point -you don't need it anymore- but gain an inside line to hang stuff, like wet clothes or an electric lantern.
Great idea!! Only thing is if it rains the water follows that line underneath.
Maybe a hybrid option would be good?
@@TheBearEssentials two threads, girth hitched left and right from Tarp on the ridgeline, let the water run off, before it enters the dry zone.
@@fuerLutzi I'll bet you were in the military! Love it.. Thanks.
@@fuerLutzi I’d love to see a demonstration of what you are describing
@@nonameforuIt is really just tying short pieces of rope or thread onto the line, so that the ends hang down. The water will run along the ridge line, stop at the knot and drip down at the ends instead of continiuing along the ridge line in under the tarp.
Thanks for the video, was curious about using two taut line hitches on the ridgeline. Have to agree with others., your presentation makes it so simple to follow. After watching just two videos, I had to subscribe!
Hey Bernie thanks so much!! This was one of my first videos so I’ll be remaking a tarp setup one in the new year with even more options. Thx for the kind words man
What material do you use to make your ridgeline
TIGHTEN! not tiden! lol Great video by the way.
minor point, Steaks go on the grill; Stakes are driven into the ground to secure a tent, tarp, etc.
Good demo. Any particular reason you hang your tarp from the ridgeline rather than over top of it? I've seen it done both ways and I usually put it over the top but wondering your reasoning.
Thanks
Nate
good info..subbed
Thanks a bunch!! 👊
Great vid, thank you. I cant find a vid on how to set the tarp for first time though. Like recommendations for the ropes lenght and so on, could someone point me to such kind of video or article or forum post or something? Thanks.
Yes I will make one for you!!
very useful my son and I enjoy your videos! Question, we live in an area with ALOT of ticks that fall from the trees any advice or tricks to avoid them when camping under trees like this? thanks!
Thx for watching Erin, I personally haven’t had too much of an issue with ticks coming down off the trees.
I can create a video of setting up tarps without the use of trees, and that might solve it a bit :)
Look for the bare necessities, the simple bear necessities. Forget about your worries and your strife!
I need to tape this video to my eyeballs!
Many thanks for the instructive video! Even the dumbest knot beginner like me can understand it. 😂
If you put the taut line hitch at the side of the tarp, you no longer need to bend over to make adjustments without losing any functionality in adjustments. A two-inch bowline knot at the peg end will easily grab a tent peg or wrap around a tree utilizing a toggle. An added benefit is all the knotting is already complete.
Very insightful video! what should I do if I don't have a spot for a prusik knot in the middle of my tarp? is it fine to just have a prusik on either end and leave it at that? it would be nice to have the third in the middle for adjusting it. Anyone is welcome to give me suggestions. Could I make my own loop in the middle?
Yupp!! You don’t need the center one at all.
You could make your own loop if you wanted, but definitely not needed.
I'm going to try these knots this Summer. Only 6 months until May Long Weekend. :(
making this but for my daughters bed, so shes got a tent in her bed and she can slide it away when not using it. fun stuff!"
@TheBearEssentials
What would be the ideal length for the ridgeline and for the other anchor points?
That would avoid me to carry around a whole spool of rope loll!
Excellent. I’m interested to see the detail of the anchor point in the middle of the tarp. @ 01:59
Oh I’ll release a vid on that one specifically soon!
You can find a bit more on the Prussik here:
ua-cam.com/video/5lLPAHK_k6I/v-deo.html
Putting your adjustable friction knots at the corner of the tarps as opposed to the stakes, you can adjust tension simply by reaching out slightly from under the tarp. You can see how this would be a big advantage in wet weather. Going to the stake to adjust will get you wet, adjusting simply by reaching your arms out to the corners of the tarp will keep you much dryer. I used to do it your way but experience changed that.
What is the best rope to use for the ridge? Paracord for the prussik right?
I enjoyed this beginner tutorial on putting up a tarp; reminded me of what I was showing my six year old grandson on our camping trip last weekend. Good job.
That said, I find the captions unnecessary and distracting. If you are going to use them, put a little quality control into them. "im'" is not the same as "I'm," and the stakes you used are not 'steaks.'
Next time can you show us clueless people how to tie the ridgeline to the tree? Thank you!!!!
The reason for 3 turns on a prusik is if you are using lines of the same diameter. If the ridge line is thicker, you only need 2 turns.
