If anyone is curious about the way Hoffman was playing dumb here, it was 100% for the camera and the news. For example, "I don't read", he was usually reading more than 1 new book per week, sometimes many more. He did believe in at least some aspects of socialism/communism, but he knew that could turn public opinion of him and the counter-culture against them and he also knew the trial was far more a trial of public opinion than law (it was a complete joke and all convictions were easily overturned on appeal). He was also trying to expose the wrongs of the US government.
