  • In the trial of the Chicago 7, the leaders of prominent activist groups faced prison time for breaking a new federal anti-riot law. This came after antiwar demonstrators at the 1968 Democratic National Convention clashed violently with police. According to the Justice Department, the defendants had crossed state lines intending to start a riot.
Who were the Chicago 7? Initially, they were the Chicago 8. Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin were leaders of the Youth International Party, also known as the Yippies. Thomas Hayden and Rennie Davis represented the Students for a Democratic Society. David Dellinger, a conscientious objector in WWII, led the National Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam. Lee Weiner and John Froines were academics. And Bobby Seale was a founding member of the Black Panthers.

Considering I lived in Chicago and was personally down at Grant & Lincoln parks at different times; your analysis of this topic is very accurate. SDS (Students for a Democratic Society) & the Yippie party were quite popular at the time. All counterculture "Under-ground" newspapers (Like Chicago's "The Seed") carried a lot of local info on what was happening, where, & when. Bobby Seal's situation was also fully covered in the "Black Panther Party News" during the events. The police did use mounted officers on horses to charge at & attack protesters as well.
Street riots broke out when police attempted to force & herd people into cordoned off streets as a measure to exercise confinement & control tactics. (Standard military tactic employed against civil unrest) Of course tear gas, mace & nightsticks were liberally employed. As expected, there were some deliberate agitators in the different crowds. But for the most part, protestors did not resort to violence initially. One of my relatives who was on the police force actually told me ahead of time don't go down there, because " we are going to kick those Hippies asses". Thus, a police force induced riot ultimately was prompted for the purpose of exercising violence & intimidation. The Vietnam War was a hot topic then. The youth of America did not want to die in a foreign war which had nothing to do with them directly. And years later, the truth about things like the fabricated incident in the "Gulf of Tonkin" came out.
Unless you are over 50 yrs. old you may not truly be aware of the highly increased censorship & control of the American populace. The rules, regulations, & taxes are now limitless. But then again, I remember back in the 60's this is what we were warned about.

This is why when younger people call me “A Boomer” in a derogatory way, I get seriously confused. This was my world and my generation. I met Abbie Hoffman because I grew up on the South Side of Chicago. I knew Jessie Jackson when he was working on Operation Push. Younger people need to stop classifying all Boomers as backward MAGA jerks. So many of us created monumental changes against an incredibly conservative and patriarchal society and we did it with women’s rights, minority rights and the environmental protections we have today. Women weren’t even allowed to hold higher positions in the corporate world until the 1980’s. That was very recent.

It is important to look at what else was going on. I was in San francisco where our underground newspapers kept us abreast of what was happening in Chicago. We had a draft & all young men were forced to serve. The SF Oracle and the Berkeley Barb covered all aspects of the anti war
movement. COINTELPRO was very active. Hubert Humphrey took the nomination for President, but nobody was particularly happy or supportive of his candidacy. There were lots of street actions all over the country, as well as in Western Europe. Judge Hoffman was a hanging judge and had already made quite a name for himself in other trials & would continue to do so for some time. It is difficult to recreate this rediculous trial, but be forewarned that trials like this will come up again. Our leaders in both parties are trying to hold onto 19th century power don't expect that
to end any time soon. There is a lot of backstory to this trial & Sorkin's movie is just one representation. W/o the backstories it doesn't tell all. For example: the leader of the Chicago Blk. Panthers was trying to advise Bobby Seale. A couple of years later, he was murdered at 4am sleeping next to his partner who was 8 months pregnant by the Chicago police. He was only 22 or 23 years old. Tom Hayden (SDS) went into California politics & became a State Senator. (He also married Jane Fonda). I met Dave Dellinger in 1963 & he was a devotee of MLK and Ghandi & followed Ghandi's non violent direct action completely. This was before Kent State, but the temperature of the country certainly led up to it. See the movie, but don't stop there.

    Excellent.
I’d like you to do/look into the death of Terry Kath in 1978, founding member/singer/guitarist from Chicago the band. The band claims that Terry was under the influence at the time of his death; however, his Autopsy/Toxicology Report states there was no alcohol and only trace doses of cocaine in his body. His Death Certificate states an Investigatory Autopsy was not performed even though he died but what was released public ally as an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Additionally, There are reports that there was a party he was attending at roadie Don Johnson’s place and then that is taken back and said there was no party. There was a claim that Terry was seated at the kitchen table at the time of his death by Robert Lamm, co founder of Chicago, but police reports say living room couch. The drummer in the band, Danny Seraphine, states he received the news of Terry’s death while in his car on the way home from a Laker’s game at the Forum yet in records of games for the 77-78 season, there is no game for 01/23/78 listed. Danny was present when police arrived at the resident of Don Johnson. Danny also states in his book, Street Player, that some people walked in after Terry’s death, but prior to the police arriving on the scene. It would be nice to get a truthful account of what actually occurred when Terry Kath died.
