    He yelled at me at a senior event because I was too close to his ball in the rough. Demanded that I move twice, no marshalls. He then hit a hooked 8 iron to 8 feet from a hanging lie in the rough. Even he was amazed. Never forget it.

      Well said there buddy he does definitely like to talk about him self more than others say .....but what a lot of people especially on here forget or even know say is this man made some huge mistakes in Golf at certain times especially with my hero Mr Hogan. ..Gary asked Mr Hogan one day If he could have a meeting at his company Office wanting a new set of Hogan clubs etc after the meeting Mr Hogan asked Gary to shake hands on there deal agreement etc that was all Mr Hogan needed as to him this was gospel say ..... he then even after the Hogan company custom fitted his clubs to his spec took all there information that he got after his custom fitting and then unbelievably laughed off his agreement with Mr Hogan and went to Dunlop instead Mr Hogan never forgave him apparently for this and also never got a full apologie off Gary it came from one of his golf team unbelievable really

      I know the story because I used to teach golf with Gary’s nephew, Bobby Verway - he used to tell me stories about him.
      After Gary signed with dunlap he was having a discussion about the swing with some fellow players, Gary decided to call Ben and asked Ben what he thought. When he called, Ben paused and said ”what clubs do you play?” Gary said ”Dunlop” to which Ben beautifully replied... ”well, go ask Mr Dunlop!
      Absolutely classic Hogan! Loved it!

      He's referring to the Jim Crow laws, and he's right. The Civil Rights act wasn't passed until 1964, and even after that a lot of states evaded it any way they could -- some places even closed all the public schools, rather than integrate them.
      That said, Player is disingenuous about his attitude toward apartheid. He eventually denounced it in the 1980's, but he supported it in the 1960's.

    Gary Players logic does not add up. when Nicklaus won in 86'...exactly how many had a reasonable chance of winning the masters? 5-10 players? today its 50, at least. the peak of golf hasn't really improved, what has improved however is the average skill level of all professionals, its a helluva lot harder nowadays to win than back in the 70's. also, id wager its easier to win the grand slam on the seniors tour since of the skill depreciation. if you are a freak (like player) then you are going to benefit more from players ailing faster than normal once you hit ur 50's ( like on the seniors tour) than on the pga tour. also, Mr Player, you are going to have more injuries the faster you swing the gold club, period (and that includes players who have more efficient swings like today compared to the 70s/80s). and that is exactly what is happening. tiger woods' current state of body is a result of having to deal with more g's of force, with more stress on the body , as well as the mental, than you or Nicklaus ever had.

    • @BatMan-oe2gh
      @BatMan-oe2gh 5 років тому +1

      Great comment and spot on. If I swing my body to hit my driver 250+ yards, I have a sore back at the end of the round. If I stick to just driving 220, I am OK. And at 57, I am an easy 50 yards shorter than when I was 25. And as I have watched those guys play in the 70's and 80's, they had great short games. And who wins the most today, players with great short games, like Tiger. But, this interview was back in 2016 before Tiger had the last back surgery which worked, so Gary may have a different opinion now.

    • @jantonio1469
      @jantonio1469 5 років тому

      Only difference is you're not even 15% of the player(talent wise and mentally) than any PGA professional let alone Tiger and Jack lol. Yes all those injuries on his back and wrists took a toll but having an affair with 300+ women, divorce, being in the media all day, your family being broken up and getting coached by multiple people will not help you stay focus on your job. Mentally Tiger wasn't there and that was the most important part of his game. Injuries happen in all sports. "if you are a freak (like player) then you are going to benefit more from players ailing faster than normal once you hit ur 50's ( like on the seniors tour) than on the pga tour. also," also you sound hypocritcal. What is Player supposed to do? Not win so someone guy on youtube can criticizes him for beting his respective field. This is sports on a professional level. Youre there to win and compete. You and Shane Jackson actually sound like a hating crybabies.

    I can remember Player appearing on the Ed Sullivan show sometime in the very early 60's, and he did squats with a 300 pound barbell on Sullivan's stage. Player never weighed more than about 135 pounds, and maybe less then. I wouldn't be surprised if he can still do it today 50+ years later. Very inspiring for someone my age (66). Yes he is confidant, and arrogant, and some what self centered but at the highest level of any sport you have to believe you are the best if you don't (DOG can't eat). Now this is a man who started strong in life and is finishing strong and didn't let people's words, or life's problems effect his personality. Not only does it take good gene's but a strong mind too he has both very unique (hear hear Mr Player). P.S If people think he's talking just to talk you forget one thing we all grew up with but then slowly lost as time goes on a PASSION for life.

    • @Ligerpride
      @Ligerpride 8 років тому

      True. He improved every year though, it took him a long time to achieve greatness, and when he did he blew everyone away. That most likely would have included Nelson.

      Ligerpride No, that would not have included Nelson, and I seriously don't think he would have become what he did with Nelson there. The man (Ben) was seriously messed up in the head. People seem to forget that now that he has become a myth.

    • @Ligerpride

    I don't think the body is the problem, the trouble with age is that the experiences accumulate in your mind and it is more and more difficult as you get old to block them out and focus on one singular thing like you can do when you're younger.
    It's too bad Tiger ever fooled with his original swing. He could've owned it if he'd have kept it. Big hook once in a while, but it was natural to him. All of the rest of these iterations have not saved him from physical problems, and they've caused an accumulation of doubt in his head that he never had.
    Just look what age did to Hogan in terms of how long it took him to get off a putt. He had learned doubt and deliberation about something that should've been much quicker. It's probably true also that he had spinal issues that come with age that made putting tougher, but those were minor compared to what age did to his mind.

    The "Grand Slam" is winning all 4 majors in ONE year. NO one has done that in the modern era Mr. Player. What you mean, and purposely avoid saying , is "career grand slam", and that is Hugely different than "Grand Slam"
    It wasn't for you "harder to win majors over 50" because EVERYONE you played against was over 50 and no one was in your type of physical condition. No 20 something breathing down your back on the Champions Tour
    Player is a legend in golf but he is full of himself sometimes

    The senior majors are not as meaningful as the real majors. I cannot believe a man with such insights can talk such absolute nonsense. Jack wasn't interested in senior golf, his main tour golf was his measure. If he had decided to attack the senior majors he would have won 27 of them, add that to his 18 real majors and wow! Gary Player if you read this then I appreciate your 9 majors and the great golf you played but your senior majors will never ever get any merit from anyone. Tiger won't even play in senior golf when he hits 50. He will compete in the real majors until maybe 55 or 60 but senior golf majors will have no desire for him. You Mr Player are the only one who cares, nobody else.

    Amazing that this world is the way it is. He says he was ridiculed and attacked in the States for being from apartheid South Africa, when Americans came from a history where owning slaves was the norm, even for the leaders of the country. Gary says the truth in a very refreshing way, when most couch what they say to be politically correct, which I think is a cowards way out.

    Player is an amazing person, but his arrogance is off-putting to me.

      keefriff99, no doubt. But when you turn 80 and are doing push-ups and crunches, oh and have won 9 majors, you get to be arrogant too!

    I think for everything Tigers done for golf. He should be allowed to take a few years off. He needs to go do yoga, enjoy life, rest and in 3 or 4yrs return with a fire ammo load. Only reason he's not doing that is from the pressure of the golfing community. They have seen a drop in popularity and viewership without him. So they want to make it seem like he's planning to come back soon.

      Agreed but I think it's just psychologically. Ever since his dad's death in 06 he just seemed to not have the same fire he once had (besides that 08 US Open).

      +eqsmooth that too obviously. But I'm absolutely positive it started with the death of his father. Dude looked unstoppable before it, besides the 2008 US open which is his last iconic moment to my memory.

    With all due respect to this great champion - Gary is wrong about the pathophysiology of aging. Gary has longevity in his genome. Not everyone is so blessed.

    interesting but...saying Churchill was the greatest man in 100 years IS STUPID.
    plus..i dont give player a pass because he says he was against apartheid.....he had the money to live anywhere in the world...he choose to stay where he was

      Very True, if he truly was against apartheid, why wouldn't he name Nelson Mandela as the greatest man in the last 100 years.

    And he totally ignores the good luck he has had in the gene lottery.
    It takes a great foundation with genes to build on. Like jack Lalane who could still lift weights at 90. Sure, he stayed active but he had great genes to allow that kind of longevity without illness.
