Kurt was being a rebel, as usual. For this unplugged session, MTV told the band not to use electric instruments, but he did it anyway (his excuse was his acoustic guitar broke), you can see his epiphone acoustic not broken, he placed right there on stage. Now this fan told Kurt to "hurry up", so him & Chris purposely took their time. Legends.
All MTV Unplugged sessions are amplified in some manner, therefore "electric". On guitars you have many different ways to amplify the sound. With a show like Clampton did he had microphones, which is the same exact thing which is inside Kurt's guitar. Its called a piezo pickup. Its essentially a tiny microphone that you stick inside your guitar or under the bridge/saddle. To oversimplify it for you - Kurt has a microphone inside his guitar where "all acoustic sets" have microphones outside their guitar. You can distort an acoustic guitar. My point is: MTV Unplugged was never actually fully unplugged so why would Kurt follow a rule which doesn't exist in the first place? This is a show where you use a hollow body guitar with a natural tone (as much as possible). Musicians see through the bullshit and either play along or don't..
Actually im wrong in one way, that guitar i see has electric pickups on it, but that doesn't negate anything else i said. If he used a fully acoustic guitar then no one would hear it but ver the drums. And it still would need to be recorded on a microphone and then mastered by a producer. Its a silly line to draw that we must only allow an instrument without a plug.

I never realized Davey and Goliath was a Christian show until they showed it to us in school. Before that I would just catch it on tv now and then. I went to a Catholic elementary school, and one day they just rolled in the tv on one of those carts and we watched a bunch of episodes. Catholic grade schools are very common in Chicago.
