People only saw old tires & poverty. He makes Slow Shoes from it 👞

- Juliano Lima likes to bring things back to life. At home, his furniture is made from old pallets, scaffolding, and salvaged leather from the auto industry. At work, he turns old tires and vegetable-tanned leather into high-end shoes while simultaneously giving jobs to dozens of craftspeople in his home country of Brazil.
In the Cariris region of Eastern Brazil, Juliano found skilled artisans working in a centuries-old tradition tanning leather without heavy metals (like chrome) and crafting shoes in the town square.
He also found people like Mr. Zeca, who has been collecting old tires for forty years. He combined the two and began designing shoes of leather and recycled tires that could be 100% handmade in Brazil and sold in his stores in Barcelona and his Caboclo line online.

Oh! Kirsten (and crew/family), this was WONDERFUL!!! One of my favourites. Thank you so much for traveling the world and bringing it to us on a platter! I am so grateful to have the REAL news of the world (not the rubbish fed to us by networks). Beautiful, beautiful quality. Thank you.
I loved everything about this story. From the repurposing of things that would normally get discarded which would go to landfills, his wanting to employ people from less affluent areas so as to give them purpose and a way to make a living, the use of natural products, to the uniqueness and great quality of the products made by true artisans. Just a great story all around. Really, really liked this one Kirsten.
Why are you copyrighting my name?
Looks like might be other way round..
Great documentary, as always! Thank you Kirsten!
Love this. I have some very ancient shoes from Guatemala with rubber soles. I am sure he would love to see them.
When I was in H.S. We wore shoes similar to these callers capizio’s.
only if they could scale it and make the shoes more affordable. they are quite expensive. the change that would be very relieving to see is how to introduce more circular environmentally regenerative systems in the mainstream economy.
Awesome recycling ideas but the Marx book at the end threw me off and is the opposite of what he is doing now as a business man /capitalist 🤣👍😎👌
I bought my first shoe five years ago, and every year I bought a new pair, and still have every single one. I became friends with Juba, it's hard not to, he's such a cool guy. The whole concept of the store is so inspiring, and I'm so grateful to be part of it. For me if I could describe it all in one word it would be authenticity, at every level.
It's wonderful that you are working in the store and helping to spread the love. God bless you.
Amazing!
I wouldn't mind running a store like yours in America, showing and sharing authenticity. It's philosophical--how authentic living nourishes the mind : )
.ucky you! He is such a breath of fresh air, and his joyful energy is infectious♡
@revdupartist9386 absolutely!!!!!!!
That was super interesting to watch.
LOVE the recycling of materials.
True artisans.
Thank you Kirsten for presenting us with the lives, skills and insights of these wonderful people. I love catching everyone of your videos. Namaste from Nova Scotia.
Thanks for showing this company. I am from Brasil and we always have beautiful products made from recycled products. I am from the estate of Bahia and there are beautiful markets full of arts and crafts and household items made of things that usually would be in the land feel. I am glad that Caboclo appreciates and support these craftsmen. 👏👏👏❤️🇧🇷
Thank you for recycling. Thank you for being awake to the needs of the people and of the planet. It's a beautiful thing.
I love this man..great inventor!! And thank you for helping the world.
I just visited the website expecting these shoes to be outrageously expensive, but in fact if anything they are outrageously affordable! I love Barcelona anyway, and need to visit next year to visit La Sagrada for the third decade (‘94, ‘04, sadly missed ‘14 but ‘24 is looking likely.) so given how much it costs to get things sent through customs to the UK I might just have a pair on when I go back home. Inspired by the slow travel movement I’m looking at going by Train rather than flying.
Yes, wearing a pair sounds like good business to me...as does the train. I'm Knowing for you a Wonder-Full trip to Spain.
"Old tires are used in several different ways, which include reuse, material recycling and energy recovery. Part of the rubber in old tires is used to make new tires. Most used tires are cut up and used in the production of other rubber products, or burned in special ovens to produce district heating and energy."
Thank you, what a good show today! It makes me laugh when people are panicking about machines taking over jobs. What will everyone do? Only people can make slow shoes, and slow everything else. This is freedom at work, not unsatisfying jobs. I love what you are covering, you all show the real life of today and tomorrow.
Caboco is so interesting, as a ex shoemaker I know the work that goes into every pair. May Caboco grow and the people of Brazil prosper, thank you for telling this story 👌🙏💚
Wonderful video that feels me with joy !
Sooo good sharing these critically important life stories.
The craftsmanship is amazing!!! 🤩😊👍
Love this, supporting communities and recycling, keep up the great work
Tire tread sandals. That takes me back. Any surfer worth his salt in the 1960's would make the trip down to Baja for some empty waves and related good times and adventure. Part of that trip would be to stop at a shop in Ensenada for those great huarachi sandals that we all wore. The Beach Boys even put them in a song;
If everybody had an ocean
Across the U.S.A.
Then everybody'd be surfin'
Like Californi-a
You'd seem 'em wearing their baggies
Huarachi sandals too
A bushy bushy blonde hairdo
Surfin' U.S.A.

This channel is a beacon of enlightenment in a sometimes dark world. Bless you all.
I watched this entire video with my mouth agape 😮 What a tremendous and thoughtful life he’s living and creating for so many others! Thank you so much for this, Kristen!
My new favourite English as a foreign language pronunciation of an English word: "sky-folding" (scaffolding). It Is so poetic! And as always, an inspiring video about interesting people doing things their own way, leaving you with a bit of hope for humanity. We all need it.
After 12 years watching this channel, finnaly a video in Brazil
The way he glosses over the Portuguese slaughter of the natives of Brazil... "they disappeared" Thank you for the video.
I really appreciate Juliano's upbeat attitude and resourcefulness. We need more people with his vision and ingenuity.
Wow! I make repro antique doll shoes. I can tell you, making shoes by hand is very precise to get them right. This man is a genius!!
We were doing this 54+ years ago in Brazil & Mexico with motorcycle, plane and race car tires. The high-end shoes for our families and the commercial sandal contract for huaraches and flip flops cleaned up A LOT of land on the old reservation in Mexico near the Texas order, and we used to make the beautiful green and clear wine and water glasses from the Wine Bottles. I started them up ad they made a lot of moey for themselves ad the reservation and the somebody sold the contract to China in appropriately...nothing but trouble since.
Ótimo!
good job , congratulations
Thank you Kirsten for all the stories throughout the years. This is another inspiring story.Greetings from Croatia👏
I remember an older video you did about shoe tanning,, so cool to see an update or so. I wonder if they make those minimal run shoes, like huarachas.
An amazing concept and product! I went to buy a pair immediately, but nothing in US men size 13. 😢
True artisans
From the video: "Imperfections make things more perfect". Great episode as usual ⭐
Fabulous/Fabuloso/Fabulosa ! Content, visuals, concept. Thank you, Kirsten. Keep creating.
All the best to everyone in this video and to those who helped make this video.
que maravilha.parabens.
Recycling/upcycling is great! Good to see how machines can enhance a person's work without destroying a job, too.
Beautiful story! Well done! I want these shoes too! ❤️
This story was great from Juliano to "The Picasso of Leather" and the other artisans
Whoa... Love this guy, all of his workers and artisans, and his beautiful shoes! This was a really enjoyable video. It's pretty cool that you wear his shoes too, Kirsten.
and... a pair of their sandals are on their way to me here in Edinburgh. Thanks
Well done Guiliano and Kirsten. Great film and I wish more entrepreneurs think like Guiliano.
But, does he pay those craftspeople a good wage? They seem to the very poor.
It is good to TRANSFORM, create numerous things from the discarded, that are guaranteed 0 losses, not just for businesses, but also for many new businesses that are DESIGNED to UPLIFT the Economies. That promotes quality of Materials, goods and services.
So enjoyed this video! I love the common sense of repurposing! Thank you 😊
Your subject, edits, storytelling... ❤❤❤.
This makes me wanna revisit the evolution of "Cradle to Cradle" and their certification standards.
Thanks Justin, we’ve seen you in the comments for a while now, good sign. Best,
Three times I've taken the same pair of boots to a cobbler for resoling. The leather top with zipper is very comfortable to wear. Why toss them when they can last for much longer with proper care? I so admire and appreciate good craftsmanship. These quiet professionals are the backbone of our society. Thank you Kirsten for another amazing documentary.
I thought that tires release harmful chemicals as they decompose/wear out? Is that wrong or are the tires used preserved in some way? Sorry, just trying to understand
I was wondering the same thing and think that it may be why we don’t recycle tires for products we would wear/have direct contact with our skin or use indoors.
It seems that we may need to make tires that are made from non-toxic materials to start.
Packed with dirt and stacked/staked into place and one can use them to build a wall to earth berm one's house and not only recycle the tire, but also conserve on energy cost to heat and or cool the house.
Yes Yes Yes!!!! I love this man! I am so happy that he is doing what he can to help the planet and these Wonder-Full peoples of Brazil. God bless him and the people he is working with in Brazil.
Nature is everyone's greatest asset -- if only people knew.
So, when he showed the shoe it looked like the side wall of the tires. What are they doing with the rest of the tire (the tread part)?
excelente.....saudações do Brasil.
🙂🙂🙂
You find the most fascinating people thank you for sharing their story’s
The indios of Mexico have made shoes from tires for many years. Over fifty years. They're called hirachis. I used to on a pair. Leather and treads with nails. I could have walked 40,000 miles on them. This is not some new, trendy eco thing by modern hipsters.
Definitely, but to be fair, I don't know of any formal shoe or boot manufacturers that do this, so you'd have to agree that this combination is new and beneficial
👍👍👍
Great ideas, nice shoes!! God bless! 👍
When I lived in the mountains of India in the 70s you could go to a cobbler, they'd make an outline of your feet and then make whatever kind of shoe you wanted. Very popular with the boys who had big feet. I think the souls were also made from tires, and I don't know where the leather came from back then, but I was there when some friends ordered shoes.
In Saudi Arabia around the same time you could go to get sandals made from camel leather and tires in the same way, but they used the treads for the soles. They were very good! Somebody stole mine.😢
Of all your videos I have watched - this my favorite video !!! What a delightful & resourceful man !!! As a hobby leather craftsman , I know true craftsmanship when I see it . Every person working with & for Juliano has & is a special gift from GOD . THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS PRESENTATION .🥰
Need to measure my foot to see if they make my size. The Born is the style I can wear with the wide toe bed. Hoping they will last. I purchased other shoes from another source and they lasted a year. I'll try these. I like the rivets vs stitching. Stitching came apart and the sole wore out quickly.
💖 Well Done! Well Done! Well Done! Having a change in "mind set" about stuff & recycling one can really do anything. Love the couch & Alll the things........and the "Salvidore Dali" mustache is perfect. 🙃 Thank You All for the vid. 👍🌻🌼🌸🏵️
AWESOME! I want to see our country heavily promote businesses that only use & sell recycled materials!
We must do it now, and stop allowing businesses to keep purchasing & selling "new" items while there are so many materials and used items that we could easily re-use, re-purpose, recycle and repair.
HOW CAN WE GET THIS MOVEMENT OFF THE GROUND.....and begin to shut down all the big, wasteful, unnecessary factories????
Note: We should not promote the use of leather but instead encourage plant-based diets so that there is no need for 'factory farming' of cattle, or ruining large areas of nature to graze them.
Very good Kristen Dirksen and group. Please ask Ernesto Sirolli , to help them and others to do this work. Maybe Howard Schultz of Starbucks 🤔😇
What a great story! Thank you Kirsten 🙏🏻
❤️❤️❤️ Juba is an angel for thinking and including all those Brazilian ppl in his business!
The concept of this is not clear to me. He explained he was using leather that has been contaminated with chromium for making jackets? How is that good? Also, buying goods from Brazil harms the environment in travel and fuel and emissions. Why doesn't he buy rubber tires from Spain to use and cut out the costs of transport!
I had a recycled shoe line in LA called 'Souls Los Angeles'. Snoop Dogg and Martin Sheen would buy two to three pairs a month. This guy's shoes are absolutely amazing. He has incredible talent.
They actually went back 10 years later.
I live in Japan so i thought these shoes would be extremely overpriced, but they are affordable. Gotta get me a pair.
I wish I were a sandal guy because their sandals are absolutely beautiful.
Love it, thank you for sharing this inspiring story of innovation by repurposing, recycling and using local skills within local communities for business. Everyone wins!!

Different from your normal unique homes work.
Fascinating documentary.
I'm curious as to why my previous comment was deleted? I was critical of the business model, but certainly not offensive or insulting as far as I'm aware (and apologies if I was).
Quite poor working conditions, no safety gear, hands on glue and all black colored for the tyre workers. Water is pure but has almost foam on it, toxic levels checked once a month only. Nice concept but seems fishy and lack of safety wasn't nice.
What percentage of the profit goes to those who actually produce the pieces that are sold in Barcelona, with a recycling label, at prohibitive prices? Sometimes it is essential to question how the feeling of guilt of the privileged is used to profit from poorly paid work.
I posed a similar question, and had my comment deleted, no response as to why. Thoroughly disappointing from a channel I've followed for years and people I've respected and valued the documentary work of.
@@himselfe Seriously, DELETED?!... total disrespect for anyone asking a pragmatic and serious question. If whoever manages this channel deletes this comment, not only I will unfollow it as I will report it for lack of ethics. This is not a question of HATERS. Not knowing how to accept criticism is not knowing that it is from criticism that we also question ourselves and grow as individuals.
My handmade reclaimed tyre and daim-shoes i bought 22 years ago in portugal. The shop owner didn't want to sell them to me since she was ashamed of her retired fathers handywork. 2 pairs was out of the question... the one pair lasted me till last winter. That's how i like my stuff, durable and long lasting, but it's not good for modern day business.
If I'd seen these before I switched to barefoot styles I'd definitely have tried them, I feel they're actually underpriced for the skill that goes into making them and they're beautiful too. I work with fabric and yarn so have some idea of the time investment required and the skills are also worth a lot too. This is something I want to learn for myself too, I have the right sewing machine already, it's just working out how to do the rest.
I like how they use recycled and natural materials. But I would like it more if the shoe models were more 'natural'. With wider toes and a 'flat-line' sole. You know, like 'bare foot shoes'. In that case I would want to buy a pair.
In india we have cobler making shoes out of cow hide & tyress.
A wonderful story, thank you. I had a pair of tire sandals many years ago, made by a young guy in In a little town on the S Island of New Zealand, They were so comfortable. I left them in a car on my way through Europe a couple of years later.
You Sir are an amazing human!
Your joyous demeanor, your passion for life and being a positive impact in the world in which we live is infectious❤
No, Brazil is a Poor country with Rich people. Brazil is near the top of list of of nations having the worst income inequality.
Would be great if they made vegan shoes from natural uppers. 100% would buy.
One of your best videos…I am so impressed with his imagination…determination…his inclusion of all the artisans… a brilliant problem solver….he makes this earth a better place for everyone…thanks
sadly pretty expensive as expected. recycling is nice but it should be reflected within the price of the product. i doubt that one pair of shoes took 20 hours or more to make so the margin here are way too high. would be interesting if the tiresoles can be removed and replaced by the customer himself with cheap recycled tiresoles but i kinda doubt that.
We did this on an intentional community that I lived on as a child. Making good use of good things is called upcycling. Poor people have lots of experience. Poverty is the mother of invention.
"Slow is beautiful". I am an artisan and I have followed my heart to develop a life that allows time for creative thinking. I am living my life in a way that satisfies my desire to work with my hands. I give myself permission to make time to be creative.
I love your work and this video is particularly meaningful. Thank you
Everything is so great but let's move away from leather and funding factory farms in any way, even the skins of animals.
Wow! The things we learn about the environment and how we pollute it with the everyday items we purchase, the chairs we sit on, the jacket we wear. It takes work to keep our world clean.
The shoes look so comfortable, minimalist and elegant. Love his philosophy! Reminded me a bit of the handmade ballet pointe shoes dancers wear that are all handmade from satin, leather and paste. Handmade items are all special, one of a kind objects to be appreciated. ❤
I like this❤
Finally Brazil \o/
if you want to visit the delta of the Amazon river someday and a place to stay, our doors are open ❤
Thank you for bringing this maker to my attention. I have bookmarked his Etsy shop as a favourite.
"Brazil is a rich company filled with poor people"...I felt that.
Hi Kirsten and Family, I hope you're all doing great.
It's amazing how much your children have grown since I started watching the channel. Obviously they aren't in this video, it's an observation from other recent videos. Something I've thought of saying previously but hadn't until now. They are all growing into very observational and intelligent kids and it shows.
I truly love what Juliano is doing! He's bringing, but more importantly, creating quality on many levels. The most important being a better quality of life for not just a person, but many people. Obviously he's a businessman, but he appears to be a businessman who's not just into business for himself. He obviously is very conscious of the environment, waste, sustainability, pollution, and what humanity needs to do to make positive changes for the survival of the environment and humanity. We need many more people like him to be more active on every level of life to make the change needed, to inspire others to also do the same. It's obvious in this video that he is doing just that.
If you could do more videos with people like Juliano, I think it would help to inspire many more people that have the ability to make those positive changes happen, and begin forcing the change in ways that prove that things could function quite well when collectively, larger groups of society can influence the changes needed to turn things around from destroying the environment to nurturing it back to health.
Humanity, for the greater part, keeps thinking that it will survive for eternity. But the truth is, 'Mother Nature', could pull the plug on humanity whenever she decides to. The planet has been here for Billions of years and nature survives. Yes it changes and evolves, everything does. But species go extinct. And in the big picture, humans are just a species to Ole Mother Nature. If we continue to F with her planet, she'll get rid of us all, or we may save her the time and energy and do it for her. It seems like a race that in either way humanity is already losing and there won't be any baton to pass on to anyone else if we keep faltering in our own race.
Thank You Kirsten for continually showing the world what we can be if we decide to think more conscientiously about how we effect everything around us!
A person that would be a great interview and video for you I think would be Undecided with Matt Ferrel, he is here on UA-cam. I'll put a link below to him for you. Check him out, very in depth on sustainability and alternate ways of living in a modern way. He has really opened my head in many ways that I am working to bring into my families life. And no, he's not me, we just have the same 1st name. Hahahaha!

Hey Matt, thanks for taking the time writing such a comment; sorry it had to sit on moderation for a while (it had a link on it, stuff with URLs goes into moderation by default). Yes, life goes on, and our children are now thoughtful individuals (they were so before too, though now they are creating their agency to go through life making their own calls, though we'll be happy to help them on that for a while). Juliano is committed to his project, and he's interested in doing it his way. He cares about creating something that ages well and improves with time. Thanks for the tip in the end, will share it with Kirsten. Best,
@@nicolasboullosa Hi Nicolas, no worries. I don't expect replies or even for them to come soon if people do reply. With the videos you both do I thought Matt Ferrel would be a great interview and video for you when you are back in the USA. I've been watching your channel now for about 5 or 6 years I think, and seeing the kids grow and mature is incredible. I've yet to have kids so I see what the experience is like through others that have kids. It's truly an incredible process that I can't wait to experience myself. Much Love to All Your Family.
Grat video. Thank Kristen your work is so remarcable
i bought a pair of workboots, in the philipines, in the 70s, they used the old jeep tires for the sole
