- 'Footprints of our Fathers' is a short fictional drama film that follows a Wigton family during the First World War.
Produced by North Allerdale Development Trust and funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund to commemorate the centenary of WW1.
My Grandfather was 15 when he joined the King's Scottish Guard. He told me little of his experiences. What he did tell me was how foul the human body stinks after not bathing for 3 month. I recall never seeing him in the rain come to think of it now. And of the lice that lined the seams of his clothing. The first time drinking a beer in Belgium and how it was the greatest thing he ever tasted. He saw the Red Baron shot down and crash in No Man's land. Striking a match on some man's boots that were sticking out of the ground to light a cigarette. Witnessing the slaughter of the poor "Yanks" at Bella Wood. He was shot in the head by a spent bullet and remembers coming to and seeing the German's stabbing the bodies of the wounded, then passing out. The German's left him be as they thought him dead because of the head wound. One time he was sitting in a bench in the trenches and had just straightened out his legs to stretch them as a bullet passed through the knees of the solider on the right and the other to the left of him and he unscathed. It's amazing I'm here to even write about it now. RIP Walter W. Forrest. You'll always be my Hero.
