- WINNER OF BEST MALE ACTOR IN A LEAD PERFORMACE: RUDI KØHNKE. EKKO SHORTLIST AWARDS 2016
In a post-apocalyptic world in human decay, a protective father and his teenage daughter are forced to bring a mute teenage boy to their hide-out, which puts their relationship under decisive pressure and expose them to outer dangers.
ØDELAND is a short drama about walking the thin line between doubt and hope and the choice between truth and lie - a story about a father wanting to do everything in his power to sustain hope in his daughter in a seemingly hopeless world.
Made by a team of students of Danish independant film school, 18 Frames.

Ivar the speechless
lmao
His bother will avenge him
U genius man!!!
😂
oh damn, that was Ivar? haha
Being a fan of post apocalyptic, It sometimes reminds me a lot of The last of Us, which I appreciate a lot. I really enjoyed it, loved the colors, the actors and how it was directed. You did a GREAT JOB. I would watch another 100 of your movies!
Thank you so much! :)
Alex Hogh being carried again! 😆 and flexing his incredible acting muscles 👏 enjoyed this immensely.
Awesome! Great director, good editing and talented actors. Very affective end. Keep filming guys!
Just amazing. Great acting. So sad of a story, but very well done. Feels authentic.
Amazing work guys, I really enjoyed it :)
One word ... awesome.
Wow. I don't think I need to say anything other than that. Just, wow.
Awesome short. I have one question though,
On the beach, Why did Jacup acted like he is gonna shoot him? I could not blame the guy for defending himself.
This is amazing 👏
super impressive :-)
Students make a better movie than a lot of proffesionals... Damn..😂
Complex, completely believable story with brilliant acting. There wasn't one point where I couldn't imagine any of it happening given the circumstances.
I agree
Yep and that's because so many film studios are lead by boring, money hungry individuals who are gatekeeping cinema and constantly want to reuse and recycle antiquated movie tropes.
Rick van Bruggen I agree!
Yes. And why is that? Because they believe in what they are doing. It´s not about the money, but the message...
i wish this was the first episode of a series
Yeeeeeeeeees
So would I!
Agreed
Me too!!
Nah I don't wanna watch more of that stupid guy😂🥱
The acting in this is phenomenal - it's like the actors really got into the role. Feels real, not overdone like a lot of films of this genre. I especially like the fact the film is in Danish - not enough foreign post-apocalyptic films out there so It's a breath of fresh air. As an aspiring filmmaker myself, It really helps to analyse short films like these. I feel like I'm constantly critiquing shorts rather than appreciating them, but this film has no faults. I applaud the team behind it.
High quality effort. But more importantly for practical purposes: Please post the recipe for those bottle lamps? Anyone? Could save a life one day.
Came for Alex, stayed cause the film is good.
same
Me too
Damn, that was dark. Really enjoyed this one, would easily have gone for a full-length post-apocalypse drama with this premise. Finely directed and acted altogether!
I had the same thought but I liked it just the same.
This was outstanding .
Whoever wrote this understands what it's really like ...
No great heroics ... nothing is simple ... nothing black and white .
Just hard decisions , made with little or no hard facts , and no time to think .
Fear an ever-present thing , gnawing at you ...
Nothing is what it seems ... and you can never be sure of anything.
The fatigue and sadness from mean , vicious things happening , one right after another ... with no hope of relief ... weighing you down every moment ...
You do what you can , with what you have ... and then live with what you've done .
The blood on your hands never quite washes away ... you can still see it , even if others don't .
Fate , or God ...whatever you wish to believe ... seems to delight in torturing us with circumstances that seem to be one thing , and then , after you have acted , is found to be something else entirely .
It happens too often to be random chance ... but we shy away from believing that there is some greater ... malicious force at work .
It is no wonder that primitive peoples feared both Gods and the Devils ...
Viewed the Gods as petty and spiteful , taking delight in playing games with men's lives ...
We want the world to be a good place , or at least neutral ... even with all evidence to the contrary .
As a father of daughters , I was relieved to see her survive this time ... but knowing the next horror is waiting for her , because she did .
And yes ... I have lied to my daughters too ... to let them believe that there is a bit of goodness in the world ....
It's what fathers do ...
Wauw. This was very moving and poetic.
Thank you for this. I love that you felt something and connected with it. :)
Jesper Quistgaard
Indeed , I did ... I have had to make those shoot/no shoot decisions ...
and no matter how many times you tell yourself you did it right ... there will always be that cold feeling up your spine , that maybe you didn't .
Once the bullet is out of the barrel ... there is no taking it back .
Most men do not kill out of malice , but out of love ... love for God , country , family ... or maybe just the guys standing on either side of him in the fight ...
We tell ourselves we take life to save lives ... and pray , on those dark nights when we are all alone , and have to face our real selves ... that it's true .
But I think , my friend , that you and I both have heard the mocking laughter of the mad Gods on the wind ... taunting us for the lies we tell others ... and more shameful ... the ones we tell ourselves .
The causes may lie with them , and the games they play ... but the blame lies squarely on us ...
As men , we cannot shirk it , nor dodge it , but must accept it ... take it on our shoulders , to carry , like the weapons and gear that is our lot to bear .
No complaints ... it's what we signed up for , when we accepted being a man , and all that goes with that name .
Romeo Whiskey sounds like a story I'd like to hear. Very powerful.
If you have want to, you can email me your story at fiktion@goodwillfilm.dk
:)
Jesper Quistgaard I'm ex military , and have worked for many years now in the security field as a contractor .
I'm not one of the high-speed , low-drag guys that you want to talk to .
I know a bunch of those guys , and they have much better stories than I do .
I don't tell the " he came out of the bushes , looking away from me , weapon down , so I shot him ... " stories .
Most everybody I know , tells the funny stories ...
The stupid shit that goes wrong .
The " ... and then , I tripped and fell on my ass ..." stuff ...
Sometimes the cautionary tales ... the " There we were , doing our thing ... fat , dumb and happy ... when it all blew up ... " kind of thing ...
In the last few years , I have spent a good deal of time teaching various people the how , what , where , ( and most importantly) ... WHY ...
of employing weapons , gear and equipment.
And just as critical ... what to do after the shooting stops ...
Using trauma kits and advanced first aid ... for all the big , bloody holes ... sucking lung wounds ... cuts , burns , broken bones and such , that result from such activities...
It is truly astounding , the amount of damage that modern weapons can do to a human body , in a short amount of time .
How to get medical help on the scene , and how to get your casualties out , without doing them further damage , or getting them killed doing it .
Something that the movies seldom go into , and shooters don't want to think about , but desperately need to know .
Not a lot of money in it , but a great deal of satisfaction , in helping others get up to speed , as far as weapons handling goes , while gaining a safety and security mindset.
I might shoot you a couple of story ideas , sometime , if you guys are interested... but they will be fiction .
An amalgamation of stories guys have told me , and things I've seen done ...
I'm sure you have individuals around you , who can tell pretty much the same ones .
Keep doing what you guys are doing ... I really like your style .
Hah! Sucker. You don't have to lie to your daughters to show them their is goodness in the world you dope. Just show them. There's plenty. I'm constantly directing my 10 yr old girl's attention to goodness around her but get this: I show her by creating it myself as well. I'm like, duh.
How could anyone give this a thumbs down? It makes the acting and direction on some of the American sci fi shorts look absurdly childish and amateur.
I've watched a lot of post-apocalyptic films on UA-cam, and this is one of the best I've ever seen. Thank you, and I hope you continue making films -- This is awesome!
Agreed zxy I vote 10+
Perfect ending, no winners, no losers, just survivors
i dont agree. they all lose even more in the future if the truth comes out.
That was amazing! I really wish there were more like this. Poor Jakup though.
Steph Macc thanks :)
Jesper Quistgaard Is it available on DVD?
Steph Macc sadly no. would you like a copy? :)
Yes absolutely
I would love a copy
This is an amazing film. Alex Hogh Andersen did an amazing job!!! But overall the film is incredible!!! :D :D :D
This is quite frankly one of the best short films I've ever seen in my life. When a piece of art like this can bring me to tears. I am very much like the Father Figure in this film. Amazing work.
wow, that was sad, but really good, could be made into a movie. you guys rock. keep up the good work.
I would never have guessed it's a student film. It's so professional. Having studied at a film university in Greece, I have to admit that the movies that have been produced by us are not even close to your outcome. Well done you guys! You nailed it!
They certainly did!!!
I'm incredibly impressed... I could read the emotions and worries on the fathers face. Such talent and creativity, Thank you to everyone involved for sharing.
Really looks like a mix between The last of us and The Road
Great movie and great acting
That was so good! Alex Høgh Andersen is so weird not being a cripple! :)
Ødeland is now one of my favourite films, love Rudi Køhnke!
I love this movie and that it was produced by students in Denmark makes it even better ❤️🇩🇰👌🏼 (And Alex Høgh Andersen 😅😘❤)
THAT BASTARD SHOT MY BABY ALEX
but apart from that, the film was really great. Good work, I enjoyed it very much. They all did a great job acting this and thanks for the subtitles!!
I loved absolutely everything about this film, and not understanding the language didn't take away from it at all.
Would really love to see more films from the same crew
This gutted me 😢 I didn’t expect to be crying for the “bad ones,” too. Such an amazing film - and outstanding acting!
edit: this was a student film? remarkable!
Canibals?
@@keionchase2144 They were not the bad ones they were just family looking for Jakub but it was every reason to thing they were the canibals.
@@17MrLeon Exactly Leon! I too thought they were not cannibals, but just another family out there. So if the father just wrestled the kid (who had no bullets) instead of immediately shooting him, then both of these two survivor groups might have bonded instead and grew to start a community. It's heavily implied that Clara is into Jakup and not just because he's probably the only other boy around her age.
Still, I really like this short for keeping us guessing and just like Romeo Whiskey said, it's the dread of not knowing, not being sure. After all, they DID find the kid so near the cannibal's hospital base.
However, for me, the kid would be having withdrawals and shakes and other symptoms of consuming human meat, which weren't shown at all, so I really really doubt he or his family are cannibals. I'll have to rewatch the short and see by silhouettes of the people dragging the latest naked victim.
I watched this because i love alex. But damn this short movie is incredibly made. A masterpiece.
I know I'm three years late to the party, but this is a superb film. Thank you!
I am 5 years late but so happy I found this film.
Loved it. Sad story, but unfortunally, we can't trust strange people in a postapocalyotic world.....nor in a "normal" world for that matter. Greetings from Brasil!
Ivar Boneless
Ivar the Mute
Why did they kill him
I here.
Ivar spechless
Better than any million dollar budget movie.
Well done.
This would make an outstanding series.
This story is written by a genius. People will have to do "things" when the hard times come. Some will make it...Some won't.
this was fucking good
Those "magic" bottle lights can be made using salt and a magnesium element.
Can you explain or give a link to somewhere that does?
I am interested.
Thanks.
Ty
Jesper Quistgaard excellent piece of work !! I am so tired of the same exact apocalyptic story with cheesy effects , lackluster acting and dumb plot . You kept it simple but beautiful and managed to concentrate more on a fathers love for his daughter than the apocalypse ! Believable story and Jakob had to die or the father would have lost everything. Jakob’s family or comrades would have killed them to survive seeing they were cannibals . That was beautiful that the father lied to his daughter to insure hope . To hold on to a piece of humanity in its darkest of times !!! I salute you Jesper Quistgaard .... kept directional and making films !!! 👍🏾👍🏾✊🏽✊🏽👌🏾👌🏾
Thank you so much 😁🤗😇
Award worthy. This would be a great pilot for a series. I didnt want it to end.
This was amazing! I love it very much! Not too hard to understand since I'm Dutch. But much easier with the subtitles.
Thanks so much for uploading this. Such an interesting story, I wish that it could have been longer and that Jakup had survived. But I guess that wouldn't make it as interesting...
HolandaChiquita I'm very glad you liked it. Have a great holiday :)
A sad ending has a bigger impact ;)
I have to say this is by far one of the best short films I have watched. Outstanding performance.
Why the fuck does this have not anymore likes?
Most people don't like sad endings, I suppose!
I have great passion for dystopian- and apocalyptic films, and this one was great! I love the nordic gloomy vibe here, fits perfectly to the film. Greetings from finland!
WOW. I have watched a few of these the last few days and this has been by few the best and most believable movie I have watched. This is the most believable movie so far, regular people making hard decisions. Great job.
Bravo!! Fantastic! Entrancing, well done. The story, acting, filming, editing... brilliant! Thank you for sharing it with us.
Nice Short film.. But I have a question... Was Jakup a Cannibal? 🤔
Thanks!
My intention as a director was: Yes - Jakup was a cannibal :)
Someone explain to me why so many of the shorts on UA-cam are so much better than anything in the theaters.
I know right
Because they are not dumbed down, and therefore, are thought provoking. It also helps that in many cases they are not driven by political agendas being pushed by Hollywood and the like.
Online leaks loosing money before they come out' resorting to reboots instead afterwards.
They're free to tell their story without the interference of the various "moneyed interests"
Shorts have a purely creative motivation behind them, as opposed to justifting astronomical theatrical movie making expenses. Plus, lately there is an infestation of pointless, storyless, thoughtless bs shown in movie theatres, with content so bad its a wonder how it made it past sceenings.
Reminds me of Joël and Ellie. Love it !
Wow I am learning Danish and came across this film. Amazing!
Ivar from Vikings he is such a good actor and he is so hot 😍😍😘😛
How is this one of the best films I’ve seen and it’s only half an hour long???? It’s bloody fantastic!!!!!
has the feel of the movie The Road. Great job at setting the scene and giving a real feel of hopelessness. The fact that he wants his daughter to believe in goodness in a time like that is really telling the role that a father plays. Kudos to the film makers
High quality effort. But more importantly for practical purposes: Please post the recipe for those bottle lamps? Anyone? Could save a life one day.
For anyone guessing the nationality of who the characters of Jakup and the people he is with they are Albanians hence why the protagonist father couldn’t read the language of the medicine 🇦🇱
wow that was just amazing
Ich wished this was a 2:30 hours film...
Alex is just too good of an actor. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for him in the acting community
This was great...Jakup is the star in the Vikings series
white tiger really? wow!
Extremely well done, and only thing you can say is that one wishes it was longer..to flush out the story. Who was the cannibals? Was it part of Jakup's group? What is there backstory? The dad and her? When did she do that to her arm? Needs more answers, and I would watch to see them. Her facial expressions were on point, as was his, and nice job by all the actors and directors/producers of this film..Now make us the rest of it please
My one and only criticism... He would have used the handgun from Jakub instead of a knife. It's overwhelmingly obvious that he would have.
Salazar Payne - totally agree
I'm crying...how mistakeful we are. Thank you a lot for this movie. Greetings from Ukraine!
I love the bottle lights dope
Alex, why do you ALWAYS die at the end? WHY? This is the third role I watch and you die! WHY? 😢😢😢😢
it's very good!
This short film was nothing short of amazing. The story that unfolds is gritty and really impactful with it's message. You really can't trust anyone in a post apocalyptic world, not even your own family. Yet there are things and people in said world that are out to get you and deprive you of anything they can. Sometimes their intention is just the same as your own; survival.
This concept sat heavy throughout the film and did a excellent job portraying it. He lied to keep his daughter safe, along with whatever little innocence she has left.
Great acting, beautiful cinematography with perfect locations, well edited, and produced. Definitely a thumbs up.
Very dark story. Absolutely wonderful! I wish that this was a Series.
Somehow in half an hour this movie manages to evoke more emotion and sadness than almost any full-length, full-production post apocalyptic movie I've seen prior. I'm struggling to think of more than a few AAA titles that come close to hitting this mark. Absolutely heart-wrenching, and amazingly done. I wish more cinema was exactly like this.
The Father Of The Daughter - Had An Good Moral Compass - When Killed AND When He Lied
Dette er en fængslende og en følelsesmæssig produktion. This is an captivating and emotional production.
This is excellent, and very similar to The Road.
Hands down the best short on UA-cam.
The weight of their decisons to kill, and keep themselves safe, or don't kill and run the risk of someone they don't know killing them feels so real! you nailed it!
Excellent acting. Brilliant plot. Profound lesson on life. On human beings. On survival.
The story was lean, the moral clear, and no moment was wasted which keep you engrossed.bbsolutely fantastic.
SO heartbreaking. People operating with a tribal mentality. Only familial/"blood" relations has any value.
Type "Postapocalyptic" into the UA-cam search and hundreds of amateur films appear,
most are, let's say lacking a certain quality.
But this one is really good. Looks like someone used their WW2 gun collection as props, but
that's just fine. The acting was spot on and the scenario's believable. A film short that leaves
the viewer wanting a sequel must be good.
Well made, Thanks.
how about the magic lights, do you can tell us more. Thank you and great shortfilm liked it very much:)
Thank you very much, Daniel. Means a lot.
What do you want to know about them?
They were made by mixing bleach, water and another toxic in a bottle.
Then there was a small LED light in the bottom.
The idea for the bottle came when I saw how they make light in some 3rd world countries.
I didn't want to do torches. Everybody uses torches, so I thought this was quite visual and original :)
Thank you for your quick answer. This idea was brilliant, it added something interesting to the whole atmosphere;)
If I had a heart, I would love this.. give me more, give me more, give me more!
Yes, I followed "Vikings" here and the line seemed apt. I don't have a heart anymore because you just ripped it out and stepped on it!
Another grim ending. Well done but dark and humorless. Kill or be killed . when it doubt dispatch everyone. No humanity , no kindness. A dog eat dog world. This formula conclusion is getting boring!
Loved this... make more!!!
Seriously, I was speechless till the end. Fear, Probabilities, Hopes came one after another...🔥🔥🔥
Amazing...
I still try to think if his family was the canibal group or not ...
Should never have brought the boy back with him....
what is the bottle light thing? can you make them? we are in darkness a lot in S. Africa. They look light enough to read by ! good movie,
What made the bottles of liquid light up like flashlights. Might be something good to know just in case.
So was jakob a cannibal?
Ana Pérez good question.
As the director I would say yes.
But it's made to be up for debate ;)
+Jesper Quistgaard Well as an aspiring actress i can tell you i wish there were films like this in my country, it was brilliant! And i like to believe he was a cannibal maybe that's why he smelled the food
Not very many have noticed he was a cannibal now that I think of it. Thank you for being sharp and for your kind words :)
Would that change your perspective in reference to the main character's actions, like he was justified to kidnap the kid and then kill them all?
It added, to me, an interesting dilema. It was not expressively divulged, nor if they were murders. Having to eat human flesh does not necessary means that they were murders. Not at all. In several instances in history during wars, blockades and famines people had no choice but to eat even their dead, their family members. All these little unknown facts are wonderful details adding to the story, showing how a crisis would really be; chaotic, with regular people becoming less civilized, not taking chances.
I think the cannibals intended him for their next meal...he's young and healthy, and would probably taste better than someone old and stringy!
When the dad saw the boat of people coming in, why didnt he just hide in the grass and go prone and once they were about 100m out just ambush the guys in the boat. That 8mm rifle would zip right through that wood boat and the people in the boat would have no cover and no where to go, it would of been a turkey shoot
Not to mention that prone with a steady firing stance, good cover or better yet 2 other alternate firing positions it would be unlikely that from a rocking boat on the ocean while taking incoming fire they would be able to engage the guy on land properly.
Yea it had some plot holes.
Dude, I woulndt trust you with my life. Typical couch hero opinions. First you don't know how many are in the boat and how armed? Secondly, you assume he has enough ammo and that he is a very good shooter. You're just assuming waaaay too much. That guy did the right thing, which is save your child. Then lure them on your ground. You would put her on the fire line... sheesh dude, just horrible.
Again, typical (and dangerous) advice from people with no clue.
Spot on!
@@biorage6670 Then take on 5 armed guys with a knife, You would have a better chance shooting at them when they were still in the boat and if his daughter listen to her father, he would have been killed.
omg what a good movie!,...right up the with ' The Road"..
love to know more about those bottle lights, why? what do they use ? the concept behind
This is really good but, I wish Jankup didn't die, I wish he didn't turn on them and they could have been allies.
Did you even watched it?? Jankup was signaling his family so that they know where he is. He wasn't meaning to do anything bad to them. He also had some fault, he should've tell him about it, write on the paper. In the end both sides tought the worst and considered themselfs enemies. Sad.
We say the same thing about ivar
crazy me I don’t think he turned on them - he wanted his father to come get him and panicked when he was trapped at the shore - he appeared reluctant to pull the gun - the whole situation is truly tragic
Constantin Denis he had to make an immediate decision whether or not to tell the truth when he was on shackles and being questioned by a stranger with a gun. He likely would have been shot had he admitted he knew the “gang”
@@DocBree13 was his father and others the same ones in the city who were taking that naked body somewhere? Were they those cannibals? If so, there would be no allie stuff ar anything..
I have a question, was Jakup one of the cannibals?
Super: tense, edgy, thrilling....I just always hate it when they don't scoop up the weapons right off
You should submit this to film festivals. One of the best short apocalyptic films I've seen.
türkçe altyazı istiyoz...
Why is Alex always dead in this short films 😂😅
What was in the bottles to give them light? Very well done. Be proud of what you've made.
There was a special fluorescent liquid and a small battery powered light in the bottom. Thank you for the kind words 🙂👍
