I enjoyed seeing the hibiscus side by side, it helps with the size and shape of the different varieties. It's amazing to see the leaves not eaten by the dreaded Japanese Beetle,which is a problem bug for us more east.

The PW lavender one is HUGE. I’m 5’7 and it’s at least as tall as me. I’m probably going to have to move it. Heidi, that might be a good video subject. I was SHOCKED to see the size of Ballet Slipper. I’ve had here if them for 6 years, it has underperformed, but I’m hopeful that they will improve in a new location.
Rose of sharon/Hibiscus is a woody shrub. The new growth comes off the existing plant. Rose Mallow/Hibiscus is a perennial that dies back to the grown each year. New growth comes from the ground.

Seeing you walk through the line of plants really helps me see the differences in height, bloom quantity and placement, and other factors. Great presentation! I have a full sun area in z7a that is difficult for me to mow as it is a slight bank, and now I'm thinking about making a hibiscus hedge there. Is it recommended to plant new purchases in fall or spring ? I am in z7a in the Appalachian mountains of Virginia.
HIbiscus can be hard to find in the spring. I recommend planting now that way you can enjoy them next summer as they emerge naturally in your landscape.
Heidi, thank you for these videos. I'm on the fence on which ones I want and love that I can see the growth habits of each. Question: some of these varieties when full grown can get tall and wide. Can these be pruned? If so, how will this affect the blooms?
I do have Hardy habiscus. One is about 10 years old and the color is pink. The second one, is now in it's second year and called vintage wine. It's got red blossoms. I'm looking for a bit taller heights.

@@gardencrossings I have under planned most with small bulbs like botanical tulip, squill, Scilla, crocus, etc. but they fade before the hibiscus usually start so maybe I will grow some cool/ spring season annuals to also fill in. Thanks for the suggestion❣️
Mine must be very young, because they only had 2 or 3 branches, but they still had a lot of blooms. I bought and planted them the first week of August. Now the trunk and the few branches are all brown with dead leaves. I mulched about 3 inches thick in a circle around the base and close to the trunk without covering it. Then I put short wire garden fence in a square around mulched area and filled it in with leaves. But should I saw them down, or will it be alright?

They could be trimmed back once they stop flowering and the foliage starts to turn yellow in the fall.

The Rose of Sharon start (here) before the rose mallow. The Rose of Sharon typically blooms longer as it keeps putting on more buds.

These really can not be pruned all this will do is delay the blooms. It will still grow to the size listed before they bloom
I love all kind of hibiscus. So far I want to check out the holy grid hibiscus. I do like the tropical hibiscus. On the holy grail do we deadhead??
You do not need to deadhead, they usually fall off the plant. You can pick them off though if you want.

That is in an off limits area that I can't go in. But i believe those are a type of Crape myrtle.

What would you plant under or around a hardy hibiscus to hide those bare stems or fill the space they will take up but is bare in mid to late spring?
You could plant annuals for early season color. They would get covered as the plant grows.

We do not spray ours. But i believe in this garden they do spray the hibiscus as this is a showcase garden.

You can plant Spring- early Fall. Usually Hibiscus are available mid to late summer.
I have grown these from seed this year and last but have yet to see a blossom 😢
None of the ones we grow come from seed. I have never tried growing from seed.
