Jeff Jarrett was simply not a main event level talent. He was a (really) good in-ring worker and he was as smooth as anyone between the ropes. But he simply didn't connect on a personal level. The guitars, I feel, really didn't help. They just kept reminding us of him being 'Double J'.

Yeah, that was always my read on Jarrett. No slouch in the ring and not horrible on the mic. But he always seemed to be trying too hard to pull heat or be taken seriously. His bravado felt forced and, as a heel, he projected neither menace nor real cunning. From what I've seen, maybe he might have worked better if they had pushed him as bland but solid face. Leaned into the good ol' boy vibe he had with cowboy gimmick. Either that or give him a small stable of lackies to boss around and try to play up his loud mouth antics. That's my thought at least.

If you think about it, Goldberg single-handedly took out two of maybe five, or six "main-eventers" in the WCW roster within a week. Bret, then himself deciding to try and break shoot glass... Kinda fun to think about "what ifs" when it comes to WCW.
As it happens Scott Hall's final wcw match being at Superbrawl 2000 wasn't even due to injury, I asked him on a kayfabe commentaries youshoot that he did about it and apparently he was going out with someone in Turner (who was the niece of Harvey Schiller or Brad Sigel I think) and he got fired after an incident in Europe involving her and another woman (youshoot scott hall is the release where he talks about his release from wcw)
