EMP's are not that easy to produce. The only real way to produce an EMP strong enough to do anything atm is to toss a nuke. And even then it's questionable because modern electrical equipment is tiny and both types of electromagnetic induction, the Faraday and Hall effect are directly correlated to the surface of an electrical circuit. Small power modern circuits are tiny and electrical circuits that are used to drive things are meant for high power applications so they would be quite hard to knock out. The effect of EMP's as a weapon was first observed as a side effect of a nuclear weapons test where they had a bunch of telephone lines get "knocked out". So the idea of an "EMP bomb/weapon" stems from a time when simple electrical circuits were huge but low power, telephone lines for example were a huge and low-power electrical circuit that spanned over great distances. Modern smartphones on the other hand are compact, small, about the size of your hand... So, yea. Hate to break it to ya! Edit: For the record, modern power lines are high-power electrical circuits with all sorts of protection so I think they'd be fine and the internet is probably mostly optical wires by now and as such isn't affected by electromagnetic waves... Edit 2: Since a lot of people are reading this; the reason, why optical wires aren't affected by electromagnetic waves, stems not only from the fact that electromagnetic induction doesn't affect light (unless you want to talk about wave interferance but that's a different phenomenon). Electromagnetic waves and light are the same things the only difference being the frequency with which the particles of light (called photons) wiggle about (the more energy they carry the more they wiggle - This is probably where the 5G as in 5Ghz is dangerous myth stems from - these photons/waves have higher energy than previous technologies). Optical wires therefore actually carry electromagnetic waves(light). They do this by bouncing the light inside the wire across its entire length. The optical wire itself is not really super reflective, so how does light bounce around inside the wire then? Well, reflection is actually correlated to the angle at which light hits a surface. Think about throwing a ball at the floor at an angle, at 0 degrees, the equivalent to rolling the ball on the floor, the ball would carry all of its energy forwards (equivalent to 100% reflection) while at an angle of 90 degrees the ball would simply bounce up (0% reflection horizontally). So the narrower the angle the more reflective a surface is (any surface) and this means that the light that actually travels through the optical wire must be fed into it at a narrow-angle to its inner walls (imagine a tube), so this can only be done at the ends of the wire. Therefore any light that hits the wire somewhere else, like the middle will have near 0% reflection horizontally (instead it will bounce off or simply travel through it) within the wire due to the angle being too large, it will not disturb the original optical signal that was fed through the wire properly. For this reason, optical wires can actually be transparent and still won't be disturbed by the light coming from the surrounding area. Edit 3: Perhaps I should also mention that "photons" don't actually describe light itself, light is a wave. If you take a wave of light and you cut up its energy into little packets, the smallest packets you could possibly cut it up into, those bits you end up with are what are called photons.
Real talk though, can you imagine how heavy adding that system to your head would be? Even just a normal ballistic helmet with a PVS-14 starts to strain the neck after a few hours.
@@kolinmartz it looks bulky and not very convenient in confined spaces. The current tech is still not there yet. If they can make it as small as a pair of glasses, it would be insane tho.

This would be an absolute game changer for infantry units in the field. Specifically marking your locations as well as marking enemy locations in real time? My only criticism would be opsec issues if the tech were to fall into enemy hands. They'd have all the info needed to locate our positions or mission. Once Microsoft deals with that issue via scrubbing or some other form of security hardware/ software into this system - I can 100% see this being fielded effectively and safely for our troops.
integration with a swarm of drones would seem quite useful when out in the open - eg in a situation like this: ua-cam.com/video/6-9ZSqW_4ng/v-deo.html to be able to see where exactly the enemy are... on the other hand, keeping those lenses clean will be important.
From an old school black boot Grunt...yea I can totally see that, it will clearly help and I support this stuff, yet I have some questions: 1. Is it "infantry proof"? 2. Do you still learn to fall back on "old school" ways (ie, pace count beads, map and compass) if the equipment fails? Again, yea tech is good, but never forget "old school is still good schooling" if the tech fails or becomes comprimised

This technology made for Israel .. fully funded by the US .. this technology, drones and Robots will be also used to go home to home to disarm Americans
Looking forward to this. My Dad works on an Air Force base and pilots there already have this technology. As well as a 360 degree interface around the plane. Looks like your in a flying chair.
The difference is it is integrated and specially designed for the battlefield. People have cell phones and desk top computers but that is different from having a computer in your car. It opens up more possibilities and the application specific design will make it more convenient than fumbling on your phone trying to open Google maps while driving.
@Đeath Vader Back before the iPhone, they were called programs not apps. Apps have the connotation of being little programs for mobile devices sold on App stores. Programs are different, aren't necessarily packaged as apps. In general they may run independently of any OS, like Arduino code. The core of it may be hololens, but you have to make more changes to turn it into something that can be useful on the battlefield, to the point where it is not like a typical hololens device for mass consumers. The Army actually hires professionals to work on these things, or they contract them out to companies that have hire professionals. After all, the military budget goes somewhere. It's not like they grab random soldiers from their ranks and say, you, you know how to work an Excel spreadsheet, we're putting you in charge of making this technology. If the tech ends up sucking then blame the professionals.
@Đeath Vader Binary are just highs and lows of voltage. You need to set up circuits with things like shift registers and logic gates and transistors to process them, interpret what is high, what is low, and how fast to read, etc. Then there's also analog signal processing that needs to happen before it becomes binary. You don't need to hire a big corporation to be hiring professionals. You just need the people with the education and experience, not necessarily brand name.
@Đeath Vader Also of you want options like night vision and IR vision, you can't just write a program and use the default camera. You need special optics and sensors for those applications.

While the gaming industry is already experiencing the same technology.
The difference is it is integrated and specially designed for the battlefield. People have cell phones and desk top computers but that is different from having a computer in your car. It opens up more possibilities and the application specific design will make it more convenient than fumbling on your phone trying to open Google maps while driving.
@Đeath Vader Not apps like in cell phone apps. It's hardware combined with software combined with field testing and quality assurance.
I had a call of duty type stuff in this and i love it
