  • If you've been following my free beginner's guitar videos, you will certainly want to add this song to your repertoire. 'Ms Jackson' is one of those rarities: a cover version which is as good as the original. The Vines did a great job, for sure!
There are only three chords - Em, C and Dadd9. The strumming requires a little bit of palm muting but the song really sounds great once you master this rhythm.
When play 'Ms Jackson' live, I like to start the song off in Em because it sets the melancholy mood for the song. However, for the sake of clarity, the actual song actually starts with a C chord and then moves up to Dadd9, and then the Em.
Remember to play along with the original recording to develop your sense of rhythm.
For guitarists on the hunt for a dynamic blend of garage rock, punk energy, and unforgettable riffs, The Vines have been a thrilling discovery. Originating from Sydney, Australia, this band burst onto the scene in the early 2000s, bringing a whirlwind of distorted guitars and raw rock 'n' roll spirit. At the forefront of their sonic assault is Craig Nicholls, a guitarist and frontman whose electrifying stage presence and riff-heavy songs have left an indelible mark on the world of alternative rock.
Craig Nicholls, born on August 31, 1977, in Sydney, is the creative force behind The Vines' sound. His journey as a guitarist embodies the essence of garage rock revival, defined by frenetic energy, gritty distortion, and irresistible hooks. With songs like 'Miss Jackson', Nicholls has showcased his ability to craft infectious riffs that linger in the listener's mind.
'Miss Jackson', featured on their 2002 debut album "Highly Evolved," is a prime example of The Vines' signature style. This track bursts with frenzied guitars, infectious melodies, and Nicholls' distinctive vocals. It's a sonic rollercoaster that captivates with its raw energy and catchy guitar hooks.
Nicholls' guitar style is characterized by its unapologetic simplicity and raw power. He harnesses the essence of garage rock, often relying on a visceral, high-energy approach that places the guitar front and center. His riffs are gritty and infectious, a perfect match for the band's punk-infused sound.
The Vines' music is a riotous cocktail of rebellion and unbridled enthusiasm. It's a blend of vintage rock 'n' roll with a modern twist, driven by Nicholls' catchy guitar riffs and spirited songwriting. His ability to channel punk ethos into irresistible guitar hooks has made The Vines a name synonymous with raw, unapologetic rock.
As guitarists, we can draw inspiration from Craig Nicholls' stripped-down approach to music. His journey, from forming The Vines in high school to conquering international stages, is a testament to the enduring allure of guitar-driven rock and the power of authenticity in music.
In the electrifying sounds of 'Miss Jackson' and throughout The Vines' career, Craig Nicholls' guitar work reminds us that rock 'n' roll is about freedom, energy, and the visceral thrill of the electric guitar. His legacy serves as a testament to the idea that, in the hands of a dedicated musician, the guitar becomes a conduit for raw emotions, stories, and the timeless spirit of rock 'n' roll that continues to inspire guitarists around the world.
