I grew quite tired of the repeated amvs dedicated to Johan’s “attractiveness” and “evilness” So I came to sympathize with the villain and capture the true essence of what Johan’s character was. I implemented a lot of my own theories about Johan and his intentions in this amv. But this mainly focuses on who the Monster was to Johan and how the world created him. Johan never had a choice in what he was going to become and that's the tragedy behind his character.
I’ve tried many different editing styles here. Due to lack of clips, I forced myself to grow comfortable with mixing anime/manga together.
Fun fact: I started this AMV editing the “I’ll drop the darkness and watch it grow.” As I never had the intention of editing the entire song or either of the 2 verses…but the more I listened to the entire song, the more I relented because the song itself IS ABSOLUTELY PERFECT for Johan.

I think this edit points out something that no one really pays any attention to: despite being brainwashed during his time at Kinderheim 511, while the rest that survived have literally no memories of their past lives, Johan truly remembered his sister for so many years afterwards and really managed to find her. it just goes to show how important she was to him. If not her as a sister, then her role as a connection.
Yes exactly!! Idk if you read another monster but...it tells you Johan loved her more than anything in the world! It's terrifying and beautiful what love can do and I think that was the overal theme of Monster. Everyone was doing something out of love for something, it wasn't just a person or a thing - a dream, a hope, a life etc.
I wrote an essay on Johan's intentions and it being for Anna. It's a two part essay but if you are interested I'd love if you would read it and we can talk more since it seems you have more insight to Johan compared to the rest that merely draw him up as a "Devil"

Incredible effects. I especially love the merging of manga panels and animated scenes. The song fits so well and I love how it portrays Johan as the victim of Bonaparta's actions with the lines "the monster you made me". This song really adds to the deeper meanings of the show. The reflections of Johan as a child and cuts to modern day really emphasise that his development and mental state was manipulated by Bonaparta, Kinderheim, Separation from Anna, Torment over who was valued more by mother etc and this caused serious reprocussions across his whole life and really reinforces that a true monster can be a product of its environment adding a touch of sympathy which shows the tragedy of Johan's character. Convey's a lot of meaning and does the best antagonist in fiction (imo) justice. 10/10 make more stuff like this if you get the time. Your berserk amvs were great and if you turn your attention to the Berserk manga I think you could make something even better!

The second I heard this song I knew it fit...I am glad I forced myself to use the entire song!!! I spent a lot of time watching other monster amvs and each one seems to accentuate the evil in him instead of the victim he truly was? Everyone seems to ignore the fact that Johan has never had a chance - a choice to become anything other than what he became. You cannot expect those who are in darkness all the time to see or know the light. Anna did not become the monster simply because of the love and sacrifice Johan gave for her. But in return, Johan has never known love from anyone...until Tenma came along. Nature VS Nurture plays a big part in the growing of children and adults. People who just explain Johan as a devil incarnate are ignoring all the elements that created him. The world. Thank you so much again for watching!

This is beautifully crafted. Magnificent (Steiner?), Monster plus Starset, my two favorite things in the world. You really captured something that many, MANY people ignore or do not understand. Most people focus on how Johan is "the best villain", "cool", "edgy", "sexy evil", "cunning and deceiving lord", and so on. But, truly, Monster is about humans. Johan is not any of that, he's just human. And he's not "evil" because of "the sake of evil". I dare to say he can't be called evil since it's pretty obvious, even after a first watch (at least for me), that everything he did was to save Anna from suffering the trauma they endured as children. Every single person he killed was either someone who couldn't stay alive because they brought bad memories, were too close to finding out the truth and thus represented a danger to Anna's safety/wellbeing, be it emotional or physical, OR people who where disguising their true selves and reminded him of the experiments that were executed on children to brainwash them and strip them off their identity. It is clear that the only thing that kept him sane was Anna and Dr. Tenma just proved him wrong at the end of the series, by saving him once again despite knowing everything he did. Johan sees himself as a monster, and he's more of a tragic character rather than a villain, a brother willing to sacrifice himself, his identity, his world, to save his sister's. Even the mom points out at the end, Who's the real monster? A question clearly directed to the viewer as the monster could be the mom (because she chose a twin over the other when should have stood her ground), Franz Bonaparta, the Neo-nazis, the corrupt authorities (police officers, lawyers)... anyone, parents, friends, family, anyone could be the monster in another person's life. At the end of the day, the ending song "For the Love of Life" says it best: "And what of the children? Surely they can't be blamed for our mistakes," which points out the importance of upbringing in building decent, compassionate, smart, humble and strong human beings. Thanks for this AMV. I have no idea how much it took you, I used to make some kind of videos though never to this level because I never had the time, but I remember each time I finished one, even if it was 10 seconds, I would feel relieved, proud and encouraged that I crafted a beautifully assembled masterpiece. I could not imagine how you felt when you finished and each time you edited one clip, even if it was on screen for less than 1 seconds. The parallels between the manga and anime, and Johan and Anna's relationship affecting everything he does on the show is not something that many people look at. They may see it... but they prefer to see the surface of "aesthetically pleasing antagonists" or "sigma characters" and stuff like that which is not the case in Monster. Thanks again, this is a work of art, truly. And a huge fragment of human psychology and philosophy, yet greatly underdiscussed despite its role in forging our souls and who we are. Fantastic!

@@xPrincessGarnetXVI I'm glad I made your day :) I have read some of those things, yes, my brain cells almost died so I stopped reading anything related to that idea. I think we all are products of our environment and the fact that people think that Johan is evil is a shame, since it means they didn't appreciate the story enough to delve in it and see it for what it is, not for some mainstream crap. His depth and character development is what separates him from other antagonistic characters like Griffith or Friend. As soon as I have the time I will watch the essay and your other AMVs with pleasure. I don't think I'll ever have the time to edit unfortunately, I'm drained from the daily life :'l maybe when I'm 80 years old or something x'D. Yeah. When I first finished Monster I was hit with this wave of depression drawn from not only my uncertainty about the series but in trying to figure out what Naoki wanted to tell us by creating Johan. Johan just felt like crushing despair to me but then I thought, that a 2nd a watch would put things into new perspective and omg it truly did!
And thank you. I think us being twins, brother and sister, helped us understand the twins in the series on a more personal level.

From what i was presented in the story, i think like it is stated that johan is trying to remove his past and probably because it is a trigger for his other self [but i dont know for sure if the other personality thing is true or just an plan . it can also be a fallacy, i dont know for sure till i finish the series] to come out. The other personality is trying to get out using the memory shards he comes along the way.

I’ve lost count on how many times I’ve watched this. This is BY FAR the BEST AMV I have ever watched. Forgive me for the long comment but I have to ramble.
I already loved this song (and btw it’s PERFECT for this show) but this video has completely changed the way I’ll view and listen to it. Now I can only imagine Johan and Anna.
If it weren’t so revealing this would honestly work as a trailer. That is how amazing it is. It also really does Johan and Anna’s characters and relationship justice. I believe a lot of AMVs focus too much on making Johan look cool in their edits (which is still fine and I still enjoy them) rather than the heartbreaking tragedy that both he and Anna went through. Tbh I really didn’t think about their relationship much until I saw your edits and I realized… they loved each other so much and it’s so sad they never got a proper happy ending. (I’m a twin and I can’t even imagine having to go through all those hardships, and I can understand the intense need to want to be together again.)

I love this comment so much. As a twin sister to a brother, I feel exactly what you're saying. My brother and I endured a lot of hell throughout our childhood so I think that is why we felt such an attachment for Anna and Johan. Which is also why we were able to dissect them, Johan and the series a bit differently compared to most others.

if there is one thing you should read from the manga is the scene where Anna forgives Johan. The manga captures his reactions and humanizes him where the anime series seemed too scared to do it. Trust me, its sooo much more heartbreaking in the manga T-T
