- Today we are harvesting our field corn, having steak tacos for dinner and cleaning up the fields! We are working on creating our own variety of field corn, this year hasn’t been a corn year, but this variety definitely toughed it out!
Our brothers and sisters have been horribly devastated throughout much of western NC, east TN, and southwest VA. We have been trying to find the best resources to donate to, here is what I have found, if you have any other suggestions for financial donations please feel free to leave them in the comments.

Speaking as a 72 year old Iowa corn and soybean farmer living and will be dying someday on the 320 acre farm I was raised on…..ANDY we have to control that grass and broadleaf weed mess in your corn. You talk about the drought but those weeds suck more water and nutrients from your corn even in a normal year. If corn was thicker ( we plant 6.25” spacing on 30” rows) then it would help shad out weeds when in canopies. I know you don’t use chemicals so that means cultivating at 3 leaf stage. I did that with a B Johndeer and a 2 row cultivator when I was very young. Weeds and grass are killing your corn more than the drought. Next year will be better….and if not then the next year after that🤓 farmers motto. Love you kids! Gods blessing to all and you Meagan, may God heal your heart from the loss of your father.
@@iacouple1 it’s the soil that is conducive to growing the weed;
amend the soil for whatever crop you will grow and it will cut way down on the weed population.
There are natural resources all around us when we take time to look.
Love to all.
Hard work delicious supper beautiful land!! Sure appreciate all your hard work!! You are continuing a legacy for your children!
My 72 year old husband who has picked corn many years says, that you need to tighten the shucking bed. We really enjoy watching you and Megan and the kids. Keep up the amazing work!!
@@ranns160 yes it may be that you have different weeds in NC than Iowa and I’m sure some are the same. But weeds are the crops enemy and have to be controlled by the sweat of our brow. I cultivated as many as 4 times in my youth for dad before lay-bye around the 4th of July when the corn was knee high to stay ahead of the grass and weeds all because of Adam…When God punished Adam for his disobedience, He said, “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you...” (Genesis 3:17,18). And that’s all I’m going to say about that. 🤓
@@iacouple1 thank you. I like to view my life from the New Testament, “Christ in us, the hope of glory.”
“The kingdom of God is within you”.
Gardening…. Do what you feel! Amen.
You two are the perfect match. Make sure you take time for each other. God put you together and you have to work at keeping it growing. Precious family
I need to Thank each and every farmer who has ever raised food for us. I have been watching this channel for sometime and I really had no clue the work, sweat and tears you all put into producing food. I offer you my humble gratitude to you and your family for all that you do and am amazed that beyond all that you also have jobs off the farm. Your children are well raised and responsible little kids as well. Lastly I respect and admire your humility. God Bless you all.❤❤❤❤🎉
They are amazing young family it's wonderful to see that they are still some younger people that are doing this . They are sure a hardworking family I enjoy them sharing with us so much .
Have a blessed day 🙏🏻
After my Dad retired from the Army in 1971 he moved us to Western New York state to a farm.
He planted 9 acres of corn, when it came time to pick it we didn't had a corn picker we picked by hand.
It was an awesome day, my parents, 6 of us 8 kids, aunts, uncles, cousins and grandma made a day of it.
The monotonous part came after it was put in the corn crib when we had to shuck and run the ears we needed for feed that day through the hand cranked sheller😊
The children are amazing. They seem to love helping and have fun doing so. You two have done a great job with your children.
You two are naturals at making these videos. I just sat here and watched you harvest corn and bush hog for almost an hour!! I love your videos and look forward to them everyday. I’ve grown up on a farm but I learn something new every time I watch you. Thanks for the time and effort you put into your videos. You and your family are such a blessing to so many. ❤️
Good morning Megan and Andy. Many blessings 🙌
My grandaddy and uncle had a picker just like yours when I was growing up in the 50's. We would go back and walk over the fields and pick up the "nubbing" ears for the livestock and chickens. It's amazing how similar your lifestyle is to the way we lived on the farm in the 1950's and early 60s's. Love the videos !!!❤😊
Well, praise God, Good morning guys, that machine is saving yall of having to do the work yourself. And the children are having fun riding in the trailer. Looks like a lot of corn.. The animals will love it this winter.
beautiful country family, we love you guys
Adorable to see your little girl in the back of that trailer shucking that corn!
Plowing this back in is a great way to amend the soil for the next season, insuring a greater harvest.
My grandfather raised sweetcorn and Indian corn. I have shucked and shelled a grass sack full of corn for my grandfather to take to the mill to have ground for cornmeal.
I enjoyed every minute of this video. Having lived on a farm that grew corn and alfalfa, I felt like I’d gone home. It was a real joy to see all of you enjoying it too.
Andy you are loved 🥰
My Grandpa grew corn every 3rd year and picked with a picker like yours. He sold it to the feed mill but in the late 60's they stopped taking it on the cob. He couldn't afford a combine so he stopped.
The red ears of corn are beautiful. Good job!
Good morning from the great commonwealth of Pa. I love me some true grit in the morning!!
This is so fun!!
Takes me back to fun filled days. We didn’t even know it was work.
Thank you.
Great job y'all 👍🤓👍. Y'all gotta roll with the hand of weather y'all ben given when farming ❣️🙏❣️.
Things turned out pretty good. Y'all ben through alot this year with drout n Megans Daddy❣️🙏❣️.
Much love to y'all from here in Michigan ❤️
Whew that’s a beautiful family and corn🥰 I know it’s not what you wanted but a harvest is a harvest and I think your steers will certainly be grateful😁 see yall on the next one!
Good morning from my little town of McMinnville Tn. Second Nursery capitol of the world.
I love to get field corn in the milky stage and cream it and mix it with sweet corn, it almost makes corn pudding, it’s so good.
Also when you grind it for meal it’s so good to just mix the meal with a little salt and cold water and drop it by spoonful in some hot bacon grease and fry it, it’s so good with peas and vegetables or fresh greens
Your videos are just the best. If you would not have taken a video of the last couple minutes we would have missed seeing the Rooster decide to Roost on the roof and the last protective chicken go inside. Soo cute!,😊
Ahhhhh. I can feel the pain with brush hogging the corn! It's sad to see when you work hard for something and nature says NOPE! I'm excited that you got as much as you did with the colorful corn! It's always so beautiful at the Lawson farm! I enjoy seeing the gorgeous trees and the sky! ❤
Farmin life is just like you showed. Lotsa time, effort, and fuel for something that coulda gone either way; lotsa corn , or not lotsa corn. You just dont know! Good on ya for keepin on !
Compared to your initial fears earlier in the season the corn field came out great. Remember because you are sorting for the successful ears to replant next you now have built-in drought resistance. Because we can never guarantee the weather, you may want to stage your field half/half different planting weeks.
I am sitting with a 88 yr old who remembers all the old ways, she has enjoyed watching you!!!
It might be a bad year for a harvest but it's probably a great year for seed stock! Just think of the genetics of the corn that did well. We love watching ya'll! Keep on keeping on!!!
So fun watching y'all pick the corn! Been waiting to see what your field corn would look like! And pretty seeing the leaves starting to change in your area. Omg the kids sitting in the back husking the corn, I love it!!! The sunset was beautiful!
Megan get you a glass coke bottle, make sure it’s clean, take your tough steaks and lay them on something on you counter, take that coke bottle open end down and start beating that meat with it, it will leave small circles on the meat and it will brake those meat fibers, I go over it at least four or five times and turn it and do thd same, put it in a hot skillet and sear it like y’all like it and it will be so tender, I don’t use a meat mallet, my mother-in-law showed me the coke bottle method,
Thank you for letting us know about that 🙂
The corn you saved for seed was beautiful. Another great video. Thank you. 😊
This brings back memories of my teenage years. In the area I lived in the teenager around Halloween would do what was called Corning. We would sneak in the farmers corn patch and shell corn into buckets. Then at night we would throw the shelled corn at houses. The farmers that lived in our area always grew extra corn for the corners. They were great sports and so were most of the neighbors that we threw corn on their houses.
The colors in the corn are beautiful! Farmers are so smart and innovative to come up with the machinery to use on farms. I always learn something new from your videos and your corn shuckers are the cutest!❤
Amazing footage of the corn pickin. Those are two fine corn shuckers you have in the back of that trailer-do they work cheap?😁 So sweet!
I'm a city girl😢 and I'm so happy that you guys show us how certain machines work
Good mornin from Whiteville, Tenn
Hey Meagan, just bought a copy of your cookbook and thoroughly enjoyed it. Love watching your videos. Your family is a beautiful blessing. Thank you for showing that you can still achieve a positive, productive, loving family life. ❤️🙏
Leaves in the trees are beautiful 🍂 🍃🍁
As for weather, this was one of the most extreme I've seen in years. We went from a wet May to a dry June and July followed by a wet August and September. I had a fair crop of tomatoes this year but I was way short compared to most years. You have some good looking ears of corn there Andy. I think you're getting there with your cross breeding. Y'all have a great evening!
Good (early) morning from Spokane WA! ❤ Love your channel ❤
This was some pretty colorful ears y'all saved for seeds..i agree with you that autumn is a beautiful time of year and my favorite too..its invigorating to me..that rooster roosting on the barn is hilarious..not uncommon but hilarious. Guineas are guard fowl..great to have around and awesome at it,but you want to choke them sometimes, it takes a bit to get used to the racket. God bless all !! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸..and remember to vote folks!
Andy I agree with the Iowa farmer. His spacing recommendations are spot on and weed management is critical. Also if you bushogged your fodder then round baled it it’s good as a feed source for cattle and makes good bedding.
Great video y’all. I would love to get a hand full of those corn seeds. I be 71 in November and I have a garden space that is very small but I do enjoy working out side
Here in North Florida, and my peppers anit showing no sign of quitting yet. So Cool to have yall with me in the kitchen as eye tend. Grace is with you.
Great job Andy! Enjoyed watching the channel!
That was nice looking corn you had on the table. I have always liked the look of the multi-colored corn.
Im not sure what was happening in the 60's and 70's with Corn Pickers, but we had 4 farmers in a 1-mile area from us that LOST FINGERS in their Corn Pickers. One guy must have really been really in a hurry because he lost all 4 fingers and thumb on one hand, and next summer lost 3 fingers on his other hand. Had flashbacks when I saw your machine clogged up. BE SAFE! ❤❤
..I know the last four/six weeks have been a challenge..where u usually cultivate ur fields that has been a chore..from no water to more water than u expected and don't forget personal family lose..I still think u two have handled the year of 2024 harvest amazingly.. 😌💜😌 ..lol
I know American thanks giving is in november
But here it is thanks giving day
So happy thanks giving to all your canadian viewers
Cant wait to see yours

Thank you for showing us how the corn picker worked. I had not a clue!
Hello from PNW Oregon❤
Good morning from Middletown Pennsylvania
Work hard, eat good. Great video.
Flank Steak: Season/salt pepper, Broil 5 min per side, rest, Slice on bias (across grain) about 1/8 to 1/4 inch. I usually do it on a 30 to 45 degree angle. Yum Yum.
Good afternoon from Ireland
We use to pick our corn by hand. It was almost always cold, still loved it.
❤ I always look forward to your videos!
Ahhhhhh it's working. So cool

Love y’all!!❤
Praise the Lord from Deep South Mississippi. Love your beautiful family so much❤🤗🤗😍😍
Fantastic video Andy and Megan
Flat Iron steaks are one of my favorite steaks. They are tender and flavorful. I marinate them in Mr. Yoshida's Original Gourmet Sauce (on Amazon or in some stores). We are looking forward to some cool fall weather down here in Southeast Texas. Stay safe! Love from Texas ❤
Hi Megan and Andy ,Jacob,Maggie, I love channel and Love your beautiful family I pray for you all and your families .thank you for your Video's. Your channel kinda reminds my uncle Charlie's farm, I sure did get a big kick out of Maggie and Jacob back in the Cart (so cute) it brought precious me for me I use to do the same thing when I was their age God bless you all . Love ya Jan Ps your land is beautiful
I loved the colored corn so pretty🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🫂❤️
What you got will beat snowballs this winter!!
I like that corn picker, especially after seeing the size of your field! Picking by hand would be so time consuming.
Great video.
Your corn is really pretty. The weeds are certainly a real mess. As you already know, a good killing frost would take care of all those weeds. Your corn picker would slick right through the weeds. In North Carolina, when would you have to wait for a good killing frost? Where I am from in Northwest Missouri, we had a killing frost generally by the second week in October.
Another great video, Andy I was gonna ask you what that rope was for and then when you was on taking it off you explained what it was for,I’ll be darn, and your little ones was right there to help you ❤
Meagan: "Hope you enjoyed the video"
Me: "absolutely i did, as always!"
ya'll have a good one and we'll look forward to the next one 😊
P.S. those were some beautiful ears of corn
Enjoyed the video!
Pretty color corn 🌽 some big ears in wagon. Enjoy your videos
💚
Good video my Daddy always planted the same kind of corn I can't remember the name of it it was a long white ear that's what we had ground for meal that we practically lived on cornbread and fed the cow and mule it was tough on being a sharecropper but us younguns did not know how hard it was we always had something to eat I still love anything corn nothing beats a good pone of cornbread and milk straight from the cow and a lot of that corn had two ears sometimes 3 Daddy always picked out some of the best ears for seed just wish I could remember what kind it was it always produced a good crop it had a small cob with big long grains
I’ve got a couple of those flat iron steaks that I got from a Farm up the road. I’m glad you’re cooking some so I can get an idea lol
Most everyone had to eat field corn back in the old days. That was what they had. It is pretty good before it drys out.
Good morning from the PNW!
Maggie is so cute in the back of that corn wagon but she might need a helmet back there if there’s more corn flying next year lol 😆
Hey Andy and Megan
I’m a city girl all the way closest to a farm is the local farmers market. I admire you and Andy for the way you live and raise your children.
The corn Andy is picking with the picker is that ornamental corn?
Hello from Portugal!
Good Morning....Hope your hand is okay Andy....didn't seem to bother you much cutting up steaks... Have a good one...!!!
better then watching TV
Leave the shucks on some of the pretty corn for decoration.
Could you run a small walkbehind brush hog down the rows to knock the weeds down. A gravely mower or a yazoo big wheel mower.
I understand why you need different tractors.
I did share a video the other day and got several friends give me a thumbs up. Hope the subscribed.
Love to see 🦌 deer .
I love your videos. I know nothing about farming but I see you talking about cross breeding your corn for specific traits. I don't understand how that works, for instance do you just plant say a red corn seed and a white corn seed next to each other so they can cross pollinaite and that would give you ears with the traits of both on a single cob? I mean like red and white speckeled corn on the ears from the corn stalks being planted next to each other? I see all that speckeled corn and it looks amazing. It would make good decorative ears for making fall wreaths and such. Its interesting to me how you do that.
Gosh, that a whole Lotta time and labor for just a little bit of corn.
Do you plant crimson clover as your cover crop? My uncle used it in his corn fields to keep weeds down & to put nitrogen back into the soil.
Hi M Ontario Canada ❤❤❤❤
Cut the steaks against the grain first and thin...if you don't cut qgainst the grai, the meat eill be stringy and tough ...then you can fice it up for easier eating for tacos
You need to look at your farm auction and find a 2 roll corn planter
If it's for live stock for get the heirloom corn and plant the old yellow hybrid
Why?
Flat iron steaks are 1 of my favorites as a steak tender and flavor
Flat iron steaks were tuff to me but everyone that we asked said the were good
Out here in Northern California if you plant "field corn", you don't eat it. It's strictly for livestock. Is the corn you call field corn "flint" or "dent" corn that can be dried and ground?
