I'm literally tearing up watching this. Love Joel so much. He's singlehandedly transformed the food system with his passion and expertise. You've done an awesome job capturing this!!
So... 2 of my children were visiting Polyface Farm with their 4H group while you were filming. They were so excited to come home and tell me that they met Joel Salatin and saw you in the distance (and your family)(disappointed that they didn't meet you as well). Such a neat experience! Thanks for sharing all you do and inspiring another generation to embrace sustainable living!
Ah, bless you guys. Next time you see us please feel free to come and say hello. We love meeting our fans :) Maybe at the Homesteaders of American Conference this October.
What a great man he is. Working with all of nature and not mega corps to grow food and keep the land alive as nature has done for millions of years. I so respect how he willingly shares his wealth of knowledge with others. Totally selfless.
When your kids get old enough they could go there and get so much information for their farms. Wow what a great way to teach the next generation. Great video
I love my Virginia. From the mountains to the ocean. All encompassing beauty that never fails to inspire and uplift. Mr Salatin has a beautiful place in the Shenandoah Valley. I hope you enjoy your visit!
I could listen to Mr. Salatin talk all day. So interesting. I have watched many lectures he has given . I was so surprised to see Casey there. He is such a humble young man. Thank you Justin for introducing us to him and his channel. I subscribed immediately to his channel the first day we watched him at your farm. Best wishes and safe travels.
Im 20 now and live in the city but cant wait to buy some land and a house to start doing what you are doing. I love your way of life where you take it down to what life really is and I think that all humans need more of this. Im studying molecular biology and would love to somehow combine that with this lifestyle cause that would be amazing. I just dont know how to start and manage both having a farm and study/work at the same time and where I would be able to do that. If there are any other in their 20's comment so we can discuss what to do with our lives haha.
Thank you Thank you. I didn’t expect that we would get this much time with Joel and the in-depth with the interns. I figured maybe a taste, but you’ve really gave us a lot on your channel. Bless y’all and be safe.
I absolutely love that interview with Joel. Talk about a guy really in tune to his business model, take the cost out and let nature feed them. Subbed with this one. I don’t even farm pigs or plan on it. But that was incredibly informative.
This is a jam packed, deep bedding teaching!(pun intended) Thank you for making the effort to visit Polyface. Shout out to the Yooper farm gal from MI!
Wow! That was super fantastic. I hung on every word from beginning to end. Mr Salatin does use big words, LOL, but in the context he uses them, anybody can understand. If I can understand him definitely anyone can understand him. He is so knowledgeable that if I were closer I would go anywhere he is speaking. I love this trip y'all are on, one of my favorite videos so far. If I were a younger man I would jump at the opportunity to intern under him. Fantastic video guys, I was amazed at moving those pigs. Anyway long comment sorry, God bless y'all, stay safe, and we'll see you tomorrow. Jimmy
You’ve done it again and made another incredible video! Joel Salatin is such an amazing teacher and it’s always so awesome to listen to him. Thank you, fqor sharing your time with him. God bless you and your family.
Wow!! super duper : ) Cooperation with the 'grand design' (i.e., permacuture, regeneration, etc.) is so much better than competition : ) looking forward to tomorrow.... thanks a bunch!
Great video! There is so much extra info about the pig system that I haven't seen in other videos and didn't hear about when we did the tour. Just small tidbits of information that can make a difference. How awesome to go behind the scenes with the interns! Outstanding crew! I am commenting on all the places you guys are posting with Polyface lol. Can you tell I am excited for yall to be at Polyface? 2 of my favorite farm families together.
Man, that's solid. This guy is amazing and what you've been doing, Justin, is the prime of the prime in engineering: create, adapt and improve. I feel really inspired by what you've been doing. Thank you!
its amazing if you read the bible and understand it, god gave us everything we need in our own ecosystems that if we put the hard work in at first the animals and what they put out takes care of us. all blessings to GOD thank you lord!!!
Very interesting. I never thought about what pigs see when people get amongst them and how easily they can be moved. Is it too late for you to add corn to the deep bedding in the Pigport? Would that be a problem with keeping the bedding inside if they dug too deep? Nice to see Casey.
3 Questions. Do they reseed the paddock after the pigs were there or is there seeds dormant in the soil that grows when pigs are off?. Does grass and herbatious plants get time to go to seed between rotation? How long between rotations?
5-12 days per paddock. 1/2 acre paddocks. 30-50 Pigs a paddock. At least 80 days of rest per paddock. Way more detail coming in "Permaculture Pigs" (coming out in October).
As a young boy, I drove a Berkshire boar over a mile to breed a neighbors sow in less than an hour just walking behind him and only moved right or left to allow him to see me if he veered off. He'd straighten out and keep going. Coming back was a little bit harder to get him started and then he settled back into rhythm.. less than an hour coming back. The second time it took about 3/4 of an hour...(he figured out where he was going...) I did carry a long stick with a flag on it and only yelled if he wasn't paying attention. Pigs are smart and if you're willing to get down and communicate once in a while they will know you're not out to harm them and will try to cooperate. Berkshires are the meanest and stupidest breed I ever worked with. Most of mine were Pole and China. BIG compared to yours.
I have just watched a string of your videos about this man and his family/farm. You do a great job with these videos. You seem to have a real and deep interest in this, and you know how to ask pertinent questions without being an 'interviewer' as it were. I have the feeling I saw this man, Joel, in a video some years ago whose theme was farm-reared vs factory-farm-reared animals and the effect that has on the quality of the meat products and their healthiness (fewer/less bad bacteria etc.) Anyway thanks a lot for sharing these. I am enjoying each of them more than the last. By the way, are all American farm girls quite this attractive? I think I want to buy a farm in the U.S. :) Just kidding.
The FULL Course is out NOW! See Joel's FULL teachings, HERE: bit.ly/PermaculturePigsCourse

This man is a national treasure.
Apprentice Ashley is absolutely amazing! What a hard working and smart young woman! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
She sure is. We were totally impressed by her focus and leadership skills.

The last clip made my heart swell. You both are so precious

We go into a lot more depth in Permaculture Pigs. Going out soon to Kickstarter backers and available to the public in October.
Awesome video, you're always nailing it. Thanks

Beautiful Thanks. Looking forward to next lesson learned a lot here
Loved this video Justin.
Glad you finally got to see the hog sort boards I was trying to encourage you to buy or make. Such an interesting man
Truely amazing. We're so getting some of those.
When Joel says "corn" I assume he means sweetcorn/maize? Would it work with barley or wheat grains I wonder?
