Me: In my day theme songs had neat guitar riffs and made you feel ready to have fun. Other 29 Helen's: That's right Me: Nods affirmatively even though I'm not a real Helen
Apparently this one person commented how their principle would play this in the mornings when people were out in the halls when they were supposed to be in class. I'm sure the 5 dislikers were those kids in the hall...
This song reminds me of playing games in the rec hall where I grew up. They'd play Comedy Central & MTV on a big screen TV. Each riff smells of green grass, hot summers, and 90's existential dread. I'd never want to be a kid again, but I definitely miss those "simpler times".
It's crazy how the show is considered to be overlooked and underrated but highly appreciated by today's comedians and those who are involved in alternative comedy.
Growing up with this show and loving it ever since it was advertised during Saturday morning cartoons for some reason here in the U.S., many of my friends didn't think it was funny because they didn't "get it" or because it was too "gay" they were all really missing out!
@@seamusmcboon558 agreed 👍🏻. I have found there are 2 types of people in the world: those who get the kids in the hall and those who do not. I prefer to socialize with people who get it ! 😬
This song is a great example of wonderfully executed surf-rock that isn't Dick Dale. Kids In The Hall exposed me to the band through this song (KITH's theme song), and a lot of their work is just as good as (and somewhat similar to) this particular piece. One has to wonder if the Shadowy Men love or hate this song. On one hand, they probably are grateful that it gave them national exposure across Canada and eventually the world, but as many one-hit wonders are painfully aware, it is probably the only song that anyone ever asks them to play, which would be a great cause of irritation, I would think. At any rate, I love it, and it always brings back great memories when I hear it.
I remember walking into the Dakota Tavern for a Lowest of the Low show and Shadowy Men were belting this out with Dallas Good on bass. Epic, my great Canadian moment.
I worked in a furniture factory the summer of 2000, after my freshman year of college. Second shift, 3pm-1:30am, four days a week. Came home exhausted and with wood glue on my shirt every night. Comedy Central ran two episodes of The Kids in the Hall every weekday from 1-2pm. That hour was the highlight of my day. Once the second show was over, it was time to make my lunch and get ready to leave. I did tend to have above-average weekends because I had Fridays off.
According to the CBC, The Kids in the Hall are making a comeback on Canadian Amazon Prime, beginning May 13, 2022, with an 8 episode run. Wow! A Canadian sketch comedy troupe returning with new season, 27 years later. I'm in ! I wonder if the band will be there, too?
Had the pleasure of getting to know Don back in the early 90's when I worked at Long&McQuaide on Bloor. He got me tix for the show. So many called them a Surfer band. In my opinion, much closer to being Rockabilly. But, ultimately, they had their own sound.
"Americans know as much about Canada as straight people do about gays. Americans arrive at the border with skis in July, and straight people think that being gay is just a phase. A very long phase" - Buddy Cole
"...it was like a three's company episode, honey! Someone walked in the wrong door and all hell broke loose!!!" "I grabbed him by the buttocks and pulled him close, ah... I didn't want him to fall down... I mean his pants were down around his god damned ankles!!"
Did they record a different version for KITH? This sounds a touch different. In the show the bass was more bass tone less bass string, the guitar had a little more reverb, played slightly more aggressivly, more accentuation on the tremelo during what I would call the chorus.
This is the only upload of this song that works for me. I think there's something wrong with youtube's servers or something because the official upload doesn't work.

Four people disliked. I am crushing their heads!

Maybe they need to find an Indian Drum!
The 90's called, they want to come over.
When my son asks me what they 90's were like I'll play him this song.
A 2nd try at the 60's
Polaris, Hey Sandy
Um, that song came out in the 80s and is definitely not indicative of the music of neither the 80s nor the 90s
Early 90s.
You're gonna confuse the boy. Do you play the Del Fuegos while you're at it?

This song rocks, and it should be Canada's 2nd national anthem.
It's a fact.
1st with all due respect sir.
30 Helens agree.
Not only is it a fact its a Can fact.
In my mind this song is to Canada what 'Land Down Under' is to Australia, only A LOT better.
All the Daves I know agree.
All the Dave's i know .....love this song !
Especially Foley
This Dave agrees.
I am not, nor will I ever call myself nostalgic. But this cuts deep.
Isn’t this just like the perfect song to listen to when you’re just taking a drive?
Perfect on a hot summer night with the windows down

Slapping that BASS!!

@@seamusmcboon558 That was the point of the show. It didn't want to be topical and did whatever The Kids wanted to make.

It's kind of the Velvet Underground of comedy in some ways: quasi-underground and massively influential
I loved the show so unreasonably much.
Of course
Extra points for the greatest band name ever.
This was my childhood jam
When the long planned Museum of Toronto History is finally opened this song needs to play in the 80’s and 90’s Room

Bill Paxman Savvy Show Stoppers was in regular rotation in my cassette Walkman back in the day. Along with a Dick Dale tape, at that. :-)
