Computers can see. Now what? | Joseph Redmon | TEDxGateway

- Joseph works on the YOLO algorithm, a real-time algorithm for detecting and identifying objects in images. It's technology that can be used in self-driving vehicles, cancer screening, robotics, or any other visual task. But when the military gets interested in using computer vision for drone warfare Joe starts to question the ethics of research that reinforces harmful structures of power.
Joseph is a computer vision researcher and graduate student at the University of Washington. When not hacking on GPU clusters he enjoys hanging out in the Programming Languages lab learning type theory, posting random musings on arXiv, and watching the hit CW teen drama Reign with his housemates. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
This guy changed CV tech so much and he's also a cool guy. Love it.
This is the 'my little resume' guy
who cares; NO ONE cus people would regret seeing it!
Pony man is based and redpilled, and he's also charismatic
TedTalk has 14 million subs, in after a few months the video still has only 3200 views. WTF is wrong?
Its because of the message Joseph is driving home mate. The other talk has over 400k views.
"Dogooders" are a minority and an elite, too; just not the same kind of elite they want to dismantle. Or maybe Alphbet Inc. isn't as benign as it's pretending to be. Or both.
@@nashhome4064 agreed.
Hi Andrej - i come to you from the future, this vid now has 2m views :)
@@troglodyto well I'm almost 3 years into the release of this video and it's at 29k views.
He is absolutely right. Tech is suppose to bring people together, but government and corporate is using it to destroy each other. This reminds be of Dues Ex world.
just wow!
a tremendous guy with truly righteous way of thinking!
Thanks Redmond!
This is a meaningful message for all engineers, scientists, soldiers, and government as well. We need to think deeply when we develop something. Thanks Joseph. and I really appreciate for your work on yolo. I learned Object Detection with this algorithm and use it for protect people in ADAS system.
In order to protect, you must also attack what you deem as a threat. Here in lies the problem. What do we deem as a threat?
Very thoughtful and emotional talk. I hope one day we could break the curse chain that every new technology will be applied to military purpose.
it's just not possible. A new technology appears, someone will use for any other purpose. Onus of free science.
multiscale-object-detection is a power!
Great talk! As CV enthusiastic, I have confronted sentiments about CV and who will use this power
Hi, Joseph.
You are doing great software!
I love how bro use jeans and sandals at same time...
Hello Pony
Genius, I feel his enthusiasm
The same can be used for security, and rescues in disasters
If you want to know the answer: nothing, Joseph Redmon left the field of computer vision in february 2020 because of his concerns.
Very powerful message
This is a Talk in IIT, Mumbai btw
Lucky sob got the Titan V CEO edition and I can't even do algebra
That's why people need to learn to code, and why proprietary development tools need to go.
RESPECT FROM CHINA
在最后他说的很对,如何不被压迫地使用这项技术,是一个很难的问题
Hair on the person head I am glad ! hahahahahaaa
very interesting video
Excellent video
@Joseph Redmon You the the man!
He used india as his dataset to train the model...lol
amazing
I admit that this technology if it is developed is extremely and very DANGEROUS so that is WHY I decided to stop digging info about it!
what??
hello dear
how to connect Sony camera with yolo. thank for your kindly.
did you find a way to do it? even I want to connect an external camera
I think you need find a connector to link serial port on the camera to usb port on your laptop. If your camera has a hdmi or mini hdmi output port, that will be even easier. Then just feed image frame by frame into yolo and you can have a lot of fun.
you need something like a raspberry pi or arduino where yolo is stored and processes then if the raspberry pi model has a bluetooth connectivity, it can connect the device to the camera.
