    Simon, congrats on your race. It was nice to meet you and you were kind enough to take a pic with me afterwards. It was funny that we both said we had leg cramps during the race. Thanks for explaining your solution to the cramps as I will also incorporate more sodium to my nutrition. Good luck in Texas.

    Justin Riele did about 300 watts to ride at the back of the front pack with Lionel and Sam. I believe if you stay consistent and get comfortable with riding around that pace and get your cramping issue solved you’ll be capable of riding in the front and running a sub-1:16 half off the bike. That would put you top 7 in Oceanside.

    • @SimonShi

      Yes!! That’s sounds about right
      Putting all 3 together in a race is what I’m working on! 😊

    How much do you think the cramping on the run was due to lack of sodium versus the fast start? 11:05 for the 1st 2 miles is 1:12-mid pace -- something only ~7 guys in the field did. Usually you see guys with 1:07-mid to 1:09-mid open PBs going after something like that. Maybe just finding 70.3 pace (5:40-5:50 on a good weather day + flat course like Oceanside was? maybe 5:50-6:00+ in the heat/on a hillier course?) from the jump gets you some free time. You know your training. But great race! Strong start to the season!

    • @SimonShi
      @SimonShi  6 місяців тому

      It might be a fast start! Of course I think I’m not used to running that fast yet. And especially coming off the bike, putting that much strain on my muscle can lead to cramp.
      So many variables so thank you for your comment and learning to be a little better for the next race! 😊

    Good hit out mate... For the sodium intake, think of the biochemical homeostasis both ways... Too much sodium may also cause unintentional firing of motor neuron units, try the cocktail both ways and don't forget potassium...

    Well done Simon. Sounds like you would have had the 1:18 without the cramps. Tough one for Rachel, but I'm sure she won't let it happen in the next race. Curious what your goal time is for Ironman Texas. Sub 3 for the marathon? Recover well, train well, and I look forward to following at Ironman Texas.

    • @SimonShi
      @SimonShi  6 місяців тому

      Yes! Thank you 🙏
      I think close to sub 2:50 I got it in me for Texas! Just need to keep my nutrition and effort level in tact on the bike 🚴

    Congrats on your race. Very humble personality and video. Question for you -- you train at 1:01's in the pool. How did you swim 1:15's here?

    • @GregJC
      @GregJC 6 місяців тому

      Open water swimming is hard. The fastest out of the water swam at a 1:12 pace

    • @SimonShi
      @SimonShi  6 місяців тому

      I think it’s just a swim start strategy for me. I’ve always been caught in the roughness and need to be in the right position to swim fast out of the crowded spaces
      And yes pool swim you have flip turns. My flip turns are efficient and fast due to swimming for my whole life

    Kind of an exciting finish there sandwiched between Taylor Knibb and the guy you just held off behind you by 1 sec who actually had the fastest run split of the day (I noticed in the results -- low 1:10, I think 😮).

      @SimonShi  6 місяців тому +1
