  • 1986 Ford Ranger running sluggish, fuel gauge not working. Removed fuel tank to investigate, and found .... yeah!
Ethanol stored in an average fuel tank outcome. ... ... and yes, it had gas in it. ;)

I've got the same truck in an extra cab ... changed the nasty looking paper element in the fuel reservoir ... now thinking I need to check the tank. Mine also struggles with a slight misfire / rough idle

This one definitely had a misfire until I replaced the tank, the pre pump and the post pump

Put the gas in a clean container and let it sit for a week or two and then filter it off and don't suck up the bottom iron Will all sink so we'll rust gas will clean itself up you can't clean that gas

Afraid to see what the fuel filter looked like

Does the electric pump take the gas from the top of the available fuel, or is it always the bottom?

@@craigsherwood2185 has everything to do with the ethanol. Ethanol essentially is alcohol, which attracts water, which promotes rust.

@@rustynutsgarage4099 You are wrong. I have an 88 ranger which sat with a half tank of ethanol gas in her for about four years. Ethanol binds with water. My tank was pristine. No rust at all! I pulled the in tank pump to get the sending unit to work. The inside of the tank looked super clean. This ranger has 170,000 miles, mostly run with regular ethanol gas. Try this experiment. Take a cup of denatured alcohol and put a cup of water with it. You will not have two cups. Ethanol does not promote rust! You probably had a hole in the top of the tank for years. There is a product to remove water from fuel lines called dri-gas. It is alcohol.
