I grew up literally 100ft away from that school. My moms house is actually one of the old staff houses.

I hope the families of the different tribes are represented well at the History Day with all of their commemorative FLAGS that all of the families donated to the Genoa Indian School. My grandmother remembered going to the movies with lots of the Genoa Indian School students (graduates of Monroe in 1938 and 1939) in a buggy. The students learned how to use and make their own harnesses, so they could make a living, they learned how to become cobblers(make shoes for other people) so they could have jobs, they were seamstresses and they learned how to run farming... so they could run farms upon their return to their homes.

"...she caused me the most damage, trauma, mental disorders-she did. I was adopted at the age of four and she wanted to absolve the adoption a couple weeks after my fifteenth birthday. So it was about a good ten-eleven years. She had an older son who also was very abusive-mentally, physically, emotionally, and sexually to me, my brother, and my younger siblings-not sexually to my younger brother- but to my younger siblings and I. It started when I was 4 and ended when I was 14 and the first time I saw it happen to my youngest sister she was, uh, I'd say uh 5. And he uh I'm pretty sure was sixteen. And I'm not sure how long if it's continued after I left but they're out. They don't have to deal with that anymore. But Susana herself physically, mentally, emotionally…I was not called by my name for years um I was either called the blonde devil, bad seed, "it", I was called "it" for a very long time. I would get death threats for a very long time, she'd tell me if she could shoot me she would, if she could just throw me away she would. Thrown up and down stairs, dragged by my hair around the house, stomped on, had things thrown at me, I had her- threatened to stab me it…um..I used…yeah. We used to get into it pretty bad as a kid, there's times I couldn't go to school because I was too beat up. There's times I felt- I remember one time I got-she stomped on me so hard I could not move for- it- it was so bad. But she's an evil woman…"
