Hi Mergim, I’ve been your subscriber since you started vlogging in BGC but this is the 1st time I’m gonna leave a comment. Your passion about what you do is unparalleled. I appreciate the efforts you put in every video that you upload. The amount of time you spend to research in order for your video to not only be entertaining but also be VERY informative is through the roof 🙌 To be honest, as a person born & raised here in the Phils and in my mid 40’s, you make me feel like I’m missing so much about my own home country, the Philippines. Not in a bad way but in a very inspiring way. You inspire us Filipinos to explore our own country more. The negative news about our country have made us so scared to go out there because we think about the dangers of being out there just like when that SUV didn’t slow down while pedestrians were crossing. Although most of us have valid reasons like lack of resources, physical disability, lack of time because of the grind of life or we’re scared to travel alone, through the videos you make, you take us to these wonderful places & corners without even leaving our home. And we find new places to go to other than going to the malls because of you. For that, THANK YOU. Keep doing what you are doing because a lot of us appreciate what you do. It’s disappointing how people watch prank or other nonsense videos more than contents like yours. But don’t let that dim your star. 💫🔥You inspire so many of us to explore more & see the beauty of the 🇵🇭

We have lots of that kind of driver sadly in the Philippines, even when they see u crossing the pedestrian, I'd say 30-40% of drivers in the Philippines. That's why it's not really safe to cross even in pedestrian lanes, sometimes they will drive so fast so u get scared while walking and they will slow down very near the lines already like wtf. Always that's y I felt happy when a biker stopped the car behind him while I was crossing and carrying my dog. Motorbikes are the same or worse. They always speed up even knowing there's a pedestrian lane. This is opposite Singapore and Australia. They will full stop from afar so pedestrian will not get startled or confused or scared. Because it's easy to get a license here, no training and actual tests unlike abroad. And many drivers thinks they own the road, unlike abroad pedestrians are a priority and they respect pedestrians so much.

For me, the only good outcome that could arise from the burning of the Manila Central Post office is that, this can spark attention to the local government to renovate the post office to become a museum or even more. And also, to its surrounding areas on how it could also be renovated, organized, and cleaned. Because even before when the post office wasn't burned, for how big the place it, I had no clue what it does, and apparently it still handled mail.

All three statues named La Madre Filipina on Jones Bridge are originals, those 3 sculptures were salvaged after the war and 1 to be reconstructed ( 2 were taken from the main facade of the Court of Appeals, where it was temporarily placed during the reconstruction of the bridge, and the other 1 was placed at the Rizal park). The 3 extant La Madre Sculpture was returned after the rehabilitation of Jones Bridge through the initiative of the City of Manila in 2019.

Very cool video… enjoyed this one Mergim… you should do more of these old landmark site videos on how they look today… but next time I would suggest that you’d place a full blown screen shot of the old picture up for us viewers to see on the whole screen… I couldn’t hardly see for comparison of the old pictures being shown from your personal cell phone… (not all of them but some of them) …but what a great idea for a vlog, especially for viewers “like me” that are interested in seeing how historical landmarks look from back then compared to see them today. And many were only seen in black & white pictures and films… Just to see them in full color is very awesome to see today.

    Very cool vlog, Mergim!
Yes, Manila was an absolutely beautiful city before WWII, with architecturally stunning structures. Hence Manila’s sobriquet Pearl of the Orient, or Pearl of the Orient Sea _Perla_ _del_ _mar_ _de_ _oriente_ , as described in José Rizal’s famous poem _Mi_ _último_ _adiós_ .
All that architectural detail destroyed, and, for some unfortunate reason, they werent able to rebuild many of those structures. Manila, in essence, never really full recovered from WWII. They even had a sufficient trolley and railway system with beautiful train stations.
Also notice, in those old films, they’re driving on the left side of the road. The Philippines used to be a left-hand-traffic, right-hand-drive, country.

Back then, Manila was called the Pearl of the Orient. Then it got completely destroyed in a siege during WW2, in what is considered by many historians as “the Stalingrad of the East”. The cause of the siege is tragic too; the Japanese had already lost & were ordered by their general to retreat from Manila by sea, but the garrison decided to still hold onto the city regardless. It led to a lot of unnecessary tragedy & destruction. Manila is likely one of the most destroyed cities in Asia during WW2, besides Tokyo, Hiroshima & Nagasaki, of course.
You can usually tell if a building is older than WW2 if it has a sidewalk underneath the building, and the building is held up by concrete stilts above the sidewalk. You see this a lot in the downtowns of Cebu & Davao, which were considerably less destroyed in the war. It’s also evidence of the way buildings used to be constructed during colonial times; a combination of Spanish arches with the way native houses held atop stilts.
Great vid, btw. Probably my favorite vid from you

The driving in the Philippines is one of connivence and speed, safety takes a back seat. That driver could care less. Western drivers have a very different mindset in large largely based on fear of fines and consequences that don’t seem to exist in the Philippines.

Imagine a whole city like UN world heritage city Vigan. Reading the history is devastating how both the Japanese and Americans wanted to erase the Spanish influence with indiscriminate bombing. Hope urban planners and architects can restore the old glory.
